N/A To improve free-cutting property, fine Pb, Bi particles is necessary to be distributed evenly in Al-Cu alloy. The control of added element size and distribution are very difficult because of the physical properties of Pb, Bi. The effect of master alloy compositions on microstructure and particle distribution was investigated. The ribbon shape of Pb-50wt% Bi master alloy showed the best results. And Ti addition improved even distribution of Pb, Bi particles. Particles grown from L₂ phase were considered to be the Pb, Bi compound.

N/A In the view point of the environmental conservation and the energy reduction, the recycling of metal scrap is coming as one of the global subjects in the world. In this study, the movement of intermetallics with electromagnetic force in a melt of a scrap of AI-Si-Cu alloy (JIS ADC12), which was widely used in diecasting process, was investigated in order to eliminate the Fe element, which was usually accumulated in a scrap. In this study, we applied electromagnetic method to eliminate Fe element in ADC12 aluminum alloy scrap which contains 1.64wt.% Fe and the effects of electromagnetic force on the particle movement was visualized and confirmed by water modeling and experiment. As a result, the Fe intermetallic compounds are moved to the direction opposite to that of the electromagnetic force as the force applies, thus eliminated from the bulk metal. Therefore, the content of Fe in matrix decreased from 1.64wt.% to 0.45wt.%. (Received February 20, 1998)

N/A Formation of oxide inclusions in the molten aluminium alloys during solidification is investigated. The oxidation tendency of both Al-4.5wt%Cu and Al-7wt%Si alloys is increased with melt temperature, particularly over 700˚C. However, an Al-5wt%Mg alloy exhibits a decreasing mode over 800˚C. The oxidation behavior with holding time shows the S curve shape for all of the alloys. It is shown that the mechanism of oxidation of Al-5wt%Mg alloy has a two step process different from that of Al-4.5wt%Cu and Al-7wt%Si alloys. The species and morphology of oxide inclusions in each alloy is also shown. The microstructure was more coarsened during solidification when the melt contains a large amount of oxide inclusion than when it doesn`t. This result can be explained in terms of both the hindrance of heat extraction by oxide film formed on the aluminium melt and the difference of heat capacity between the aluminium melt and oxide inclusion during solidification. N/A Aluminum alloy forms rapidly a layer of oxide on surfaces exposed to an oxygen-containing atmosphere and absorbs hydrogen gas by reaction with water vapor. Oxidation accelerates as time and temperature increase. Also hydrogen content increase with time and temperature. In this experiment, A356.2 aluminum chip was used. The ability of oxidation protection of covering fluxes and oxide removal ability of flux additives were evaluated. Recovery and hydrogen content of Al melt was measured with various NaCl/KCl ratio. And recovery was measured with various flux additives such as chlorides and fluorides. The optimal ratio of NaCl/KCl for protection of oxidation was 5:5. Fluorides were more effective in removal of oxide than chlorides. (Received July 23, 1997)

In this study, the formation and morphological change of the intermetallic compounds in the scrap of Al-Si-Cu alloy(JIS ADC12), which were widely used in diecasting process, was investigated in order to eliminate the Fe element, which was usually accumulated in the scrap. In accordance, the formation and morphological change of Fe-contained intermetallics by addition of Mn in Al-Si-Cu system alloy was investigated with the amount of Mn added, holding time and holding temperature. The formation temperature of the large angular intermetallic compound ascended with the amount of Mn added. The shape of needle-like Al_5FeSi compounds were completely changed to that of large angular Al_(15)(Fe,Mn)₃Si_5 intermetallics when Mn/Fe ratio was higher than 3/4. The higher Mn/Fe ratio was, the larger angular Al_(15)(Fe,Mn)₃Si_5 intermetallics were formed and the larger those were. Therefore, the content of Fe in matrix decreased from 1.64wt.% to 1.1wt.%. N/A Hypereutectic Al-Si alloys have many advantages such as excellent wear resistance, high ratio of strength to density, good castability (esp. fluidity) and elevated strength. However, in casting process, the segregation of coarse primary Si and flake eutectic Si decrease mechanical properties. In this study, using AlCuP refiner and Sr modifier, it is intended to obtain simultaneous effects of refinement of primary Si and modification of eutectic Si in hypereutectic Al-Si alloys, to measure hydrogen gas contents and to evaluate mechanical properties. Experimental results show that in the case of simultaneous effect of refinement of primary Si and modification of eutectic Si, two step addition that modifier is added into melt after refiner addition at 750℃ is more effective than simultaneous addition of modifier and refiner at 750℃ in terms of microstructure and hydrogen gas control. All mechanical properties tested were found to be improved by refinement of primary Si and modification of eutectic Si.
Al-7wt%Si-0.3wt%Mg 합금의 응고시 미세조직에 미치는 Ca 및 P 의 영향에 관한 연구

N/A In this study, the influence of impurity element Ca, P on solidification behavior and morphology of eutectic silicon was examined by observation of microstructure and by DSC analysis. In the case of 1.3 ppm P, eutectic Si was fine and fibrous when the added amount of Ca was 500 ppm, However, the modification of eutectic Si was depressed by formation of polygonal Ca-Si compounds when the addition amount of Ca was greater than 1000 ppm. The addition of Ca 500 ppm depressed the primary and eutectic temperature. The primary and eutectic temperature were depressed with Ca 500 ppm but rather ascended when the addition amount of Ca was more than 1000 ppm. When the content of P was 17.5 ppm, eutectic Si had modified morphology with Ca addition. DAS was increased, the primary temperature was ascended and eutectic temperature was depressed with Ca added. Eutectic Si appeared as coarse flake phase and DAS was decreased with the increase of P content. The existence of P in the melt depressed the primary temperature and ascended eutectic temperature. N/A This paper in investigates the effect of bubble on the primary Si size in Al-18wt. %Si alloy. The primary Si size observed was varied with bubble size and bubbling time in bubble process. The effect of the holding temperature of the melt in bubbling process was also investigated. In water model, as the injecting bubble size decreases, the residual bubble size in the water decreases and the residual bubble conservation time in the water increases. Also in the experiment of Al melt, the primary Si size decreases, as the injecting bubble size decreases and as the bubble processing time increases. Pore was observed at the center of primary Si. This pore was observed at many Si phases. So, this experiment suggests that the bubble can be used as nucleation sites of primary Si
