As a public transport, EMU(Electronic Multiple Unit) is one of the efficient ways to transport hugh amount of person in the city. For that reason, concerns about the safety of the EMU is growing. The purpose of this study is to analyze the international and domestic standards of static load test, and to evaluate the EMU carbody structure by FEM(Finite Element Method). Randomly selected EMU model was analyzed by Finite Element Code(RADIOSS) according to the standards, and also the result of analysis was estimated.

The square tube type energy absorber is normally installed in front of front cab or behind a coupler. And its main function is absorbing kinetic energy by converting into plastic strain energy to protect passenger from train accident. This study is the primary study of square tube lightweight design by utilization of lightweight material and shape of initiator. The alternative idea of lightweight square tube type energy absorber was suggested. Furthermore FEA(Finite Element Analysis) was performed by applying LS-DYNA/Explicit commercial FE code.
