Vol.4 No.-
This research is concerned with the typological continuity and transition of urban housing. The idea of typology as an operational concept is used as a tool for analysing the changing process of housing form. In this study, the typological continuity and transition from the Greco-Roman period to the Baroque are discussed in the connection with the socio-cultural background of the transition. Housing is very stable in terms of the typological transition, and the changing process is slow. Important factors of typological transition are discussed in conclusion. It is argued that typology is important because architecture is not only described by types but is also produced through them. It is also argued that types of housing establishes the continuity of the historical experience achieved by soiety. Translated into design concipts this means that historical experience represented by types should be taken as a basis for design.
The Modernization of the Korean Housing Under the Japanese Colonial Rule
2006 International Journal of Human Ecology Vol.7 No.1
The numerous changes made during the Japanese colonial rule became the basis of the current housing in Korea. Therefore, in order to understand the modern Korean housing, it is essential to understand what the Korean traditional life styles admitted or changed, and how the foreign culture of that time influenced the Korean housing under the Japanese colonial rule. Content analysis through literature review was utilized for the study, and specific sources were research papers, books, magazines, newspapers, and novels. The period during the Japanese invasion was the most active era of modernization in the Korean history. For the housing culture, especially, it can be considered as the most significant period that accepted new housing cultures that replaced the old traditional housing. The Japanese and the Western styles of housing were introduced, new materials and collective production methods were used, and the symbol of the current urban housing in Korea, multi-family dwelling, was constructed. In conclusion, the Koreans did not directly use the Japanese and western housing culture, which were constructed during the Japanese colonial period. They were adapted and altered into Korean style, and eventually, produced various eclectic housing styles.
Vol.12 No.2
The purpose of this study is to clarify the change of the Korean public Apartment Project policy especially in the field of lay-out and site planning of apartment complex. Before looking at the change, the study has been made of the chronological change in the policy and its related laws and regulation in Korea since the 1970s. The chronological study is about the change in the location of apartment, its area, its density, and the construction of its open space. As a result, the analysis of this researching process of them has shown us the following important factors in the change of the Korean public Apartment Project policy. We know, Deficiency of Apartment Project space, expansion of Apartment Project supply, and relax in index of density and building distance for development profit have continued till now. As a result, the rate of occupying open space has decreased rapidly, only to prevent Apartment Project environment from being clean and comfortable. As it were, the present laws and regulations including index of density seemed to fail as standard criteria to keep Apartment Project environment clean and comfortable. Consequently the present laws and regulations seem to need changing in order to comprehend and control the Apartment Project environment effectively.

This study is on the organizational principles of Chinese traditional houses. It has been assumed that a common cultural background did influence dwelling construction in most areas of China, some specific concepts are used to build a connection between the culture and architecture. There are four aspects of cultural influence being explored: traditional concept of space by the philosophical influence, religious influence, the Feng Shut method, and traditional system of family organization. The influence of the Chinese culture on dwelling architecture is predominant. Housing types from different areas of China, despite their different physical appearance, have similar spatial concepts. This cultural influence was due to the historic development of the Chinese empire. The organizational principles of Chinese dwelling architecture determined by its own cultural background have five major invariable norms. They are as follows: 1. Internal and enclosed spatial organization. 2. Grouping of buildings around axes. 3. Spatial organization and extension by courtyard. 4. Spatial expansion by adding units. 5. Hierarchical organization of space.
