Is the current regional security environment suitable for Japan’s remilitarization? This paper attempts to analyze the recent security condition in East Asia to see whether the structural requirements for Japan’s remilitarization are already in place. It first looks into the existing literatures examining the issues of Japan’s remilitarization. It then adopts the hegemonic stability theory as a basis for the theoretical structure while presenting its limits to draw a more suitable framework for the current security condition in East Asia. After that, three cases of China, Russia, and North Korea in recent years are examined to see whether the security condition in East Asia fits the condition of crisis described by the theoretical argument. It is revealed that they represent long-term, immediate, and mid-term threats, respectively. Furthermore, while each of these actors did not fulfill all necessary standards to become a single challenging state, taken together, their actions have created the perception of regional hegemonic challenge in the eyes of the US and its key allies. In conclusion, this research argues that the structural requirements for Japan’s remilitarization are now present.

Postmastectomy nipple necrosis is a factor that leads to a poor aesthetic outcome in breast reconstruction because of the unique projective structure of the nipple. We present a case of successful nipple reconstruction using a de-epithelialized rectangular flap. A 45-year-old woman was diagnosed with left breast cancer. She had a vertical scar below the nipple-areolar complex due to previous reduction mammoplasty. She underwent nipple-sparing mastectomy, breast reconstruction with a deep inferior epigastric artery perforator (DIEP) flap, and contralateral reduction. After the operation, the nipple gradually necrotized, and full-thickness nipple necrosis was observed on postoperative day 12. For nipple reconstruction, we designed a 38×23 mm rectangular flap from the DIEP flap considering the contralateral nipple diameter (12 mm), protrusion (2 mm), and ipsilateral mastectomy skin flap thickness (15 mm). The area in contact with the mastectomy skin flap was placed in the defect area after de-epithelialization. The reconstruction was successful and the nipple survived with a slight loss of projection. When unexpected nipple necrosis occurs after DIEP-based breast reconstruction, designing a de-epithelialized rectangular flap using the DIEP flap tissue is a feasible reconstructive method to consider.

Purpose: This study conducted a comparative analysis of the effectiveness of split-thickness skin grafts (STSGs) and free flaps of the lateral thoracic region performed for coverage after extensive debridement in patients with difficult-to-treat chronic venous ulcers (CVUs) with severe symptoms. Methods: This retrospective, single-center study included 20 patients (28 cases) with CVUs. Patients who received an STSG or free-flap procedure were included in the study. Data comparing these two groups were analyzed. Results: The STSG and free-flap groups showed no significant differences in patient demographics. There was no significant difference in wound size before and after debridement between the two groups (before, 52.25±58.03 cm2 vs. 37.69±32.83 cm2, p=0.407; after, 210.92±202.80 cm2 vs. 142.63±84.01 cm2, p=0.291). Wound disruption was not significantly different between the groups (p=0.231). However, a significant difference was found in recurrence between the STSG group (n=7, 58.3%) and the free-flap group (n=1, 6.3%) (p=0.004). Conclusion: Free-flap surgery may be a good option for difficult-to-treat, recurrent CVU. Because venous ulcers require extensive debridement, a lateral thoracic region free flap, which enables the harvest of large and various forms of flaps, could be the best choice for microsurgery.

Geopolitical complexities in the region, this study advocates for a paradigm shift towards prioritizing cultural and social interactions as fundamental pillars for building trust and cooperation among nations. Drawing upon interdisciplinary perspectives from political science, sociology, and cultural studies, the paper examines existing initiatives and proposes expansion plans aimed at enhancing cross-border exchanges in arts, education, sports, and other socio-cultural domains. By promoting mutual understanding, dialogue, and people-to-people connections, these expansion plans seek to transcend political divides and pave the way for the establishment of a sustainable Northeast Asian peace regime. Through comprehensive analysis and actionable recommendations, this paper contributes to the ongoing discourse on regional security and offers practical pathways towards a more harmonious and integrated Northeast Asia.
국내 자연산 명태(Gadus chalcogrammus) 집단의 바이러스 모니터링

Wild walleye pollock were caught from Goseong, The East Sea of Korea and examined for the existence of several fish pathogenic viruses; viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV), nervous necrosis virus (NNV) and marine birnavirus (MABV). We collected 1,253 wild walleye pollock in total during February 2015 and August 2018. 324 spleen sample sets and 259 brain sample sets were made, and examined for the existence of the viruses mentioned above by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). None of the target viruses were detected by one-step PCR. When some of these samples were further examined by two-step PCR, 19.7% (36/183) of spleen sample sets were positive for VHSV, and 4.4% (8/183) of spleen sample sets and 1.2% (3/259) of brain sample sets were positive for NNV. The target sequences of these viruses were clustered with those previously reported in Korea (Genotype IVa of VHSV, RGNNV genotype of NNV) by phylogenetic analysis. The activity of these viruses are not clear because virus isolation was not attempted, but probably very low because all the positive samples were detected by two-step PCR. 2015년 2월부터 2018년 8월까지 총 1,253 마리의 자연산 명태 (Gadus chalcogrammus)를 강원도 고성 아야진항 근해에서 정치망을 사용하여 포획한 후, 바이러스 (viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus, VHSV; nervous necrosis virus, NNV; marine birnavirus, MABV) 모니터링을 RT-PCR법으로 수행하였다. One-step PCR법으로 비장시료 및 뇌시료에서는 대상 바이러스가 모두 검출되지 않았으며, 일부 시료를 two-step PCR법으로 검사한 결과 VHSV는 19.7% (36/183)의 비장시료에서 검출되었다. 또한, NNV는 4.4% (8/183)의 비장시료, 1.2% (3/259)의 뇌시료에서 검출되었다. 검출된 바이러스의 계통분석 결과, 기존의 국내에서 분리되는 바이러스의 유전형에 각각 속하는 것으로 나타났다 (Genotype IVa, RGNNV genotype). 바이러스의 분리를 시도하지 않아 검출된 바이러스의 활성은 알 수 없지만, 모든 양성 시료가 two-step PCR법으로 검출되었으므로 매우 낮을 것으로 추측된다.
코끼리조개(Panopea japonica)에서 분리되는 비브리오속 세균의 동정

We attempted to isolate and identify potentially pathogenic bacteria from geoduck clam (Panopea japonica) larvae, juvenile and adult, focusing on Vibrios. The isolates were identified by molecular approach and biochemical characterization. In particular, we applied MLSA (multilocus sequence analysis) to the isolated Vibrios for clear identification and phylogenetic relationships, by combining 16s rDNA and several houskeeping genes (pyrH, recA, rpoA). We obtained 141 isolates; 10 from healthy adults, 52 from moribund adults with blisters and 79 from larvae. 46 from the moribund adults and 39 from the larvae were identified as Vibrio species, while the rest of these samples and all the isolates from healthy adult were identified as marine general bacteria. Among Vibrio species, Vibrio splendidus was the most frequently identified from the moribund adults and clustered with the known V. splendidus in GenBank by MLSA. However, it was still unclear that V. splendidus was the cause of blisters because the artificial infection experiment was not conducted and V. splendidus was isolated also from the larvae. Further studies are necessary to clarify the etiological agent of the blisters found in geoduck clam in this study.

매년 졸음 및 부주의 운전으로 인한 교통사고로 인명 및 재산 피해가 끊이지 않고 있다. 즉각적인 졸음 감지만을 위한 기존 시스템의 단점과 한계를 보완하고자, 본 논문에서는 위험 행동을 감지한 후 당시 사진과 데이터를 저장하고 이를 점수로 환산하여 장기적인 운전 습관 개선을 목표로 하는 운전자 관리 감독 시스템을 구현하였다. 이 시스템은 화물차 운전자와 같이 장시간 운전을 하는 대상에게 안전 주행을 장려하고 올바른 운전문화를 확립하게 하여 교통안전에 긍정적 역할을 담당할 수 있다.
