Recently, hot stamping process is widely used to reduce weight of car frame and produce eco-friendly car. High tensile strength component can also be obtained through hot stamping process. However, shock absorbing capacity is not good enough in the process. In order to solve this problem, boron steel sheet with different thickness were used in hot stamping process to improve shock absorbing capacity. Nevertheless, mechanical characterizations decreased because of al-si coating layer after butt welding. In this study, laser ablation technology of al-si coating layer was introduced to apply to hot stamping process through.

Recently in automobile industry, the study on reduction of carbon emission is in progress in reflection of the environmental issues. In particular, the study on parts in utilization of high strength sheets and light car bodies has been actively conducted. Accordingly, this study includes the experiment in use of boron steel, which is commonly used for high strength sheets. Boron steel is type of sheet used for hot stamping parts. Although it is of high strength, the elongation is inferior, which reduces the crash energy absorption capacity. To solve this problem, two sheets of different thickness were welded so that the thin sheet absorbs crash energy while the thick one works as a supporter. Boron steel, however, may involve weakening of the welding spot due to the Al-Si coating layer that is to prevent oxidation from happening during the welding process. Thus, a certain part of the coating layer that is welded for the hot stamping process of the double-thickness boron steel sheet is removed through the laser ablation, and then the formability of the hot-work is conducted.
