Terror and Fear Transmitted : The Birthday Party

        Nam Janghyun(남장현) 한국현대영미드라마학회 2007 현대영미드라마 Vol.20 No.2

During his life, Harold Pinter experienced angst and frustration when subjugated by different bodies of authority and control prevalent within society. Such was his reaction to such experiences, he used his play writing skills to convey the notion that any member of society, at no matter what level they are, can become the target of intimidation, control and fear from authoritarian institutions. In The Birthday Party, this idea is first blatantly depicted by the character Stanley who is brutally assaulted by representatives of some control-centric institution that he has tried to break away from and resist, and then, more subtly by allowing every other character to become a victim at some level. By analyzing the dynamics of the storyline, it becomes clear that the everyday normality we all take for granted can be turned on its head as we become prey to those who might seek to control us. Pinter constructs things in such a way as to allow the audience to identify with this concept to such an extent that they can feel the impact of change suffered by the different characters. Towards the end, we see that the principal predatory character loses their confidence and authority to some degree and are able to relate this to Pinter's view that authority cannot endure indefinitely and may itself fall prey to others.

        『베니스의 상인』

        남장현(Jang-Hyun Nam) 한국셰익스피어학회 2011 셰익스피어 비평 Vol.47 No.3

The Merchant of Venice is one of the most controversial in Shakespeare's plays, having enjoyed theatrical popularity as much as Hamlet. Despite a great range of criticism, Lancelot Gobbo, the clownish servant, has been slighted by a lot of scholars whose interests are directed to Shylock and the problem of anti-Semitism in the work. In this article, therefore, I would like to examine Lancelot's dramatic significance with regard to one of the main thematic issues of the play such as justice versus mercy, which is subsequently intertwined with the matter of good and evil as well as that of right and wrong. Before discussing how abundantly Lancelot's soliloquy presents those moral problems, I conduct a brief survey of critical history on anti-Semitism and its consequent moral themes and then investigate the extra-dramatic potential of Lancelot who is very likely to have been played by one of the most influential comic actors in the Shakespearean age, William Kempe. The second part of the article investigates the repartee between his father Gobbo and himself in Act 2 scene 2. Here, his fundamental problem is whether he should leave Shylock, that is, he faces the moral and religious dilemmas of keeping or breaking his bond with Shylock his master. It allegorically represents the problem of Portia and Jessica who should decide to either follow or betray their father's will. Breaking a bond is also closely related to the matter of Antonio and Bassanio, who cannot avoid breaking their respective ties with Shylock and Portia in one way or another. The final section follows with a substantial analysis of Lancelot's allegorical and satiric soliloquy where he delves into the serious moral problem of good and evil and consequently justice and mercy. In his repercussive role of mirroring the moral dilemma of main characters like Portia, Bassanio, Jessica and so on, he morally dramatizes his problem in which two opposite parties insist on their own opinions. Particularly, Lancelot's soliloquy, predicting the court room scene in Act 4, consists of two pairs of opposites, that is, ‘good’ and ‘honest’ and devil and conscience. Through a complicated crisscross match of these two contrasting pairs, Shakespeare shows how deeply Lancelot falls into the abyss of ambivalence between good and evil and ultimately demonstrates the impasse of judgment between them. Lancelot's comical wondering in his soliloquy challenges the complacency of simplistic moral divisions, drives the audience into a complete cul-de-sac of judgment, and continuously engenders a myriad of almost unanswerable questions just as the play itself does.

셰익스피어 낭만 희극의 광대 배우와 즉흥연기

        남장현(Janghyun Nam) 한국셰익스피어학회 2007 셰익스피어 비평 Vol.43 No.2

This study attempts to shed light on the dramatic significance of Shakespeare's servant characters played by contemporary comic actors. In the company Shakespeare worked for, there were famous popular comic actors such as Kempe and Tarlton who mainly played the roles of fools or servants. They often attracted more attention and received more applause from audience than the other players. Their popularity usually exceeded that of other popular or more experienced actors as well as younger actors usually playing the roles of young lovers who were often regarded as heroes and heroines from a perspective based on the plot. Such popular comic actors were mainly cast as servants in Shakespeare's early romantic comedies. In this respect, the dramatic importance of servant characters on stage requires reassessment with regard to the popularity of this type of actors. Even though they were not given many lines in a play, their appearances on stage were often accompanied with a great amount of laughter and usually left vivid impression on audiences. Therefore, when their dramatic effect is measured in comparison to the consideration of the popularity of the actor who played them, their words become more significant. Futhermore, given that the comic actors had far more freedom on stage with regard to their actions and words and could extemporize as often and freely as they could, it becomes clear that such servant characters must have had much more dramatic importance in reality. When their unwritten extemporizations in Shakespeare's early comedies are examined, the remarks made by such servant characters in relation to the contemporary economic and political climate begin to reveal their true significance and resonate in their society.

        『십이야』 : 언어와 신분관계

        남장현(Jang Hyun Nam) 한국셰익스피어학회 2008 셰익스피어 비평 Vol.44 No.1

Twelfth Night is well-known as one of Shakespeare's works fraughted with class consciousness, whence much criticism was given to the problematics of hierarchy and social movements in early modem England. In the midst of such abundant critical attention, this study instigates dynamic relationships between language and class represented in the work. In particular, writing and eloquence as a means of social advancement are highlighted in relation to both successful and failed marriages among the characters, which resulted in class movability during Shakespeare's era. The significance of writing and eloquence in social advancement has close ties with changes in the culture and paradigm of language in the age. The invention of printing and the emphasis of eloquence in Renaissance humanist education boosted the importance of such language skills. Therefore, some of the historical discourses that circulated the government ideology to educate reading and writing skills should be preliminarily examined to understand the role of the skills required to scale up the ladder of hierarchy. The teaching of reading and writing was a strategy employed by the government to consolidate its regime while the skills were under surveillance and control. As historical discourses reveal the existence of double standards within writing and reading, Twelfth Night also exhibits two sets of language skills used by a few characters of the lower class which refers to a social entity to provide service for a certain group of people. Viola and Maria prove their outstanding ability of speaking and writing and succeed in their social advancement by appropriating their masters' authority - either writing a Messiah-like poem using her master's voice or writing an epistle of love in her mistress's handwriting. On the other hand, the lack of such language skills is portrayed by Sir Andrew who often fails in his basic communication with other characters, even through letters, and also by Malvolio who possesses only a superficial skill of literal reading. Their ambitions to improve their state through marriage are frustrated because their language skills are either flawed or controlled. Therefore, the two different results of the skills in Twelfth Night imply the dynamics between literary texts and historical discourses with regard to the change of language abilities in early modem England.

관광객의 지역음식 소비행동과음식 관여도 및 음식 신공포증의 관계분석

        남장현(Jang Hyun Nam),김영국(Yeong Gug Kim) 한국호텔외식관광경영학회 2012 호텔경영학연구 Vol.21 No.5

In general, food-related personality traits, such as food neophobia and food involvement, are stable characteristics and that individuals who are more highly involved with food are better able to discriminate between foods. From this point of views, this study assumed the important role of food-related personality traits of food neophobia and food involvement on local food experience at a tourist destination. Therefore, this study attempted to examine food involvement and food neophobia in tourists` experience of local food products. Also the current study is to identify tourists` tendency towards food neophobia and of food involvement, considering arguments that tourists seem to show neophilic tendencies, liking for novel food flavours, and high food-involved individuals may be more inclined towards new food experiences. The population was set as British tourists who had tasted local food during their holiday, since this study intended to consider food involvement and food neophobia to examine the difference of food experience amongst local foods regarded as unfamiliar, a little unfamiliar, and familiar to British tourists. The analysis found that travellers, who had eaten local foods in their destination, had neophilic tendencies, and they are also highly-involved in food. the findings of this study suggest that food neophobia and food involvement can be predictors of tourists` behaviour related food consumption. limitations and future research directions of the study were also discussed.
