Objectives: New photosensitizer 9-hydroxypheophorbide-α (9-HpbD-α) was derived from chlorophyll in water with peak absorption at 660nm. 9-HpbD-α was tested with 660 nm diode laser for the anticancer effect of photodynamic therapy. Materials and Methods: Human SNU 1041 cells were seeded into 96 well plate at a density of 10⁴ cells/well for 24 hours. Cells were washed with media containing various concentration of 9-HpbD-α ranging from 0 μg/ml to 3.75 μg/ml. Then, laser treatment was done with 660nm diode laser (10mW/cm²) at various time setting (0, 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes) and with various time interval (0, 1, 4, 6, 18 hours). The treated cells were incubated 48 hours and MTT assay was done to measure the viability of cells. Results: The viability of cells was more than 90% after laser treatment in control group. The viability of cells was decreased with increasing concentration of 9-HpbD-α and laser treatment time in experimental groups. The viability of cells was decreased significantly as the interval time between addition of 9-HpbD-α and laser irradiation was increased. Conclusion: This study shows the anticancer effect of photodynamic therapy using 9-HpbD-α and 660nm Diode laser on carcinoma cell line. 9-HpbD-α is considerd as one of new photo sensitizers in the field of photodynamic therapy.

Background and Objectives: Numerous studies were conducted to develop radiosensitizers to increase antitumor effect and decrease systemic toxicity of ionizing radiation. In current study, the authors tested the synergistic effect of mutant TNF?α(M3S) with radiation therapy on heterotransplanted hypoparyngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Materials and Method: SNU-1041 cell line was heterotransplanted to nude mice. When the tumors grew up to 70mm(3) or more, the animals were randomly placed into 4 groups(n=10/group). Group I : 0.1ml of normal saline injected intraperitoneally once a day for 5 days. Group II : 10ug of TNF-α injected intraperitoneally once a day for 5 days. Group III : a single radiation dose of 10 Gy per animal delivered. Group IV : single radiation dose of 10 Gy was delivered 1 hour after intraperitoneal injection of TNF-α 10 ug. Results: Four weeks after treatment, group IV showed the least tumor growth during the 4 weeks follow up and the relative tumor growth rate(RTG) of each groups after 4 weeks were 31, 5.8, 10, and 3.2 respectively(p

Background: TCDD (2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin), a material of agent orange, was reported as a deadly poison in spite of its presence at extremely small doses. It has been reported that TCDD can cause various kinds of cancers and harmful effects on humans. However, a correlation between exposure to TCDD and cardiovascular disease is not yet known. Thus, we intended to examine the correlation between TCDD exposure and cardiovascular disease through an analysis of coronary angiograms in veterans of the Vietnam War. Methods: A consecutive 115 patients undergoing coronary angiograms between April 2004 and June 2005 at Gwangju Veterans Hospital were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups: 57 patients exposed to TCDD (Group I, average age 59.2±4.2 years) and 58 patients that were not exposed to TCDD (Group II, Average age 60.1±5.6 years). The clinical and coronary angiographic findings were evaluated. Results: Baseline clinical characteristics, inflammatory markers and echocardiographic parameters were not different between patients in the two groups. The incidence of diabetes (43.9% vs. 25.0%, p=0.035) and hyperlipidemia (47.4% vs. 27.6%, p=0.028) were higher in group I patients than group II patients. Significant coronary artery stenosis was more common in group I (45 cases, 78.9%) thanin group II (33 cases, 56.9%) (p=0.011). Conclusions: There was a higher incidence of diabetes, hyperlipidemia, and significant coronary artery stenosis in patients that underwent a diagnostic coronary angiogram that were previously exposed to TCDD.(Korean J Med 73:299-306, 2007)

This paper presents an optimal design of a permanent magnet actuator(PMA) using a parallel genetic algorithm. Dynamic characteristics of permanent magnet actuator model are analyzed by coupled electromagnetic-mechanical finite element method. Dynamic characteristics of PMA such as holding force, operating time, and peak current are obtained by no load test and compared with the analyzed results by coupled finite element method. The permanent magnet actuator model is optimized using a parallel genetic algorithm. Some design parameters of vertical length of permanent magnet, horizontal length of plunger, and depth of permanent magnet actuator are predefined for an optimal design of permanent magnet actuator model. Furthermore dynamic characteristics of the optimized permanent magnet actuator model are analyzed by coupled finite element method. A displacement of plunger, flowing current of the coil, force of plunger, and velocity of plunger of the optimized permanent magnet actuator model are compared with the results of a primary permanent magnet actuator model.
