The incitant of soft rot on burley tobacco leaves in the curing vinylhouse was identified as Erwinia carotovra subsp. carotovora on the basis of its physiological characters. The bacterium yew best at $25^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, but no growth was detectable at $40^{\circ}C$ in the nutrient broth for 24 hours period. Burley tobacco leaves inoculated with the bacteria (Ecc) produced typical soft rot lesions when the incubation temperature was 25 to $30^{\circ}C$ and the relative humidity was more than 8075, however, the lesion development was suppressed when the temperature was $40^{\circ}C$ and the relative humidity was below 80%. Significant negative correlation was found between hanging space in the curing vinylhouse and the incidence of soft rot on the tobacco leaves harvested in a rainy day regardless of streptomycin treatment.

The significance of soil and/or rhisosphere populations of Erwinia carotovora sobsp. carotovora (Ecc) as a source of primary inoculum for tobacco hollow stalk disease has been demonstrated conclusively. The survival of Ecc in field soils fter overwintering was estimated by using the enrichment technique. The population number of pectolytic erwinia (PE) in field soils relatively decreased at the rate of 102-104 colony forming unit(CFU) per g of soil after overwintering. Higher level of PE population overwintered in the rhlzosphere foils of tobacco stubbles and detected more frequently in rhizosphere soils of weed plants than in those of bare fields. All of the tobacco stubbles collected from fields where tobacco had been grown the previous year contained Ecc. The more survived population number of PE at the 30cm depth of artifitiany infested soils than at the upper of those by introducing with diseased tobacco plant tissue after overwintering. Ecc overwintered effectively in rhizosphere soils of tobacco stubbles, overwintered weeds and tobacco debris in field soils.
Streptomycin 내성 담배줄기속썩음병균 방제약제 선발

Chemicals including antibiotics and bactericides were screened for suppression of streptomycin-resistant Erwinia cmutouom subsp. cmutovom (Ecc) strains in laboratory and field conditions. Oxytetracycline, ethoquinolac and dichlorophen suppressed the growth of streptomycin-resistant Ecc strains in vitro. Fractional inhibitory concentration (FIC) indices of oxytetracycline and ethoquinolac mixed with streptomycin against the Ecc strains were equal to and less than one, respectively. Consequently the efficacy of those chemicals in mixture with sorptomycin were non-antagonistic But that of dichlorophen mixed with streptomycin was more than one, therefore the efficacy of the mixture was antagonistic. Spray of oxyteoucycline, ethoquinolac and agrimycin-100 on the topped burley tobacco plants was efficacious in reducing tobacco hollow stalk at the same level of sorptomycin treatment in three-year field trials, which suggests that those are promising chemicals to be alternative to streptomycin for control of tobacco hollow stalk.

Five commercial chemicals, Dimethomorph, Foseyl-Al, Oxadixyl +Mancozeb, Propamocarb hydrochloride, and Metalaxyl, were tested for control of tobacco black shank (Phytophthora nicotianae) and/or delaying buildup of the resistant population to Metalaxyl which has been used for control of the disease in Korean tobacco farms. Propamocarb hydrochloride seemed to have a cross-resistance to the Metalaxyl resistant isolates showing similar response with Metalaxyl in vitro. Meanwhile, Dimethomorph+Mancozeb and Oxadixyl+ Mancozeb were selected to be the promising chemicals which are able to be alternative to Metalaxyl for the black shank control in accordance with in vitro and in field trial.
버어리종 담배 포장에서의 가칭 담배 묘썩음병(Pythim spp.) 발생 및 방제에 관한 연구

Seedling rot occurred on burley tobacco at the early growing stage after transplanting was surveyed in the Chonbuk province, the main area for burley tobacco production, during the 3 crop years from 1986. The incidence of disease was about 0.6-0.7% every year and major causal organisms were Pythium spp. More diseased plants were observed in the fields in which tobacco planted with improved mulching system than in that with any other mulching system. The temperature and relative humidity in the planting hole covered with polyethylene film for 11 days after transplanting were recorded by 27-45$^{\circ}C$ and 75~95%, respectively. The punched polyethylene film mulching field showed less diseased plants than that with improved mucking. In improved mulching system the longer period of mulching caused higher incidence of seedling rot(r=0.74**). Soil drench treatment of 200m1 of aqueous Metalaxyl Solution(125ppm) was effective to control the disease.

The population of Ralstonia solanacearum (Rs) in soil is very important as a primary inoculum source of bacterial wilt in tobacco fields. To investigate the population of Rs, physical properties and chemical components during the tobacco growing season, soil samples were taken from the fifteen fields which were located in the flue-cured tobacco growing area, Ansung, Kyunggi province and Wonju, Kangwon province. Two fields of the fifteen were bacterial wilt free. Six fields had less than 10% plants being diseased and seven over 10%. The Rs population level determined by using SMSA medium generally showed an up-and-down pattern being low in May, high in Jun and July and low in August. The soil population in May and June showed a positive correlation with the incidence of bacterial wilt (r=0.571*, r=0.688**), but P2O5 content of soil was negatively correlated with the disease incidence (r= -0.539*). These results suggest that Rs population in soil examined in May or in June, and the P2O5 content in soil should be key factors to determine the bacterial wilt potential of tobacco fields.

Erwinia carotovora subsp. Carotovora (Ecc), a pathogen of tobacco hollow stalk disease, was isolated for testing susceptibility to streptomycin from diseased plants in burley tobacco growing area. Of 157 isolates tested, 17 isolates (108%) were resistant to the antibiotic at the antibiotic from field soils, which streptomycin had been used continuously for three years for control of the disease was three times higher than those of non-used. There was no difference in virulence and generation time between streptomycin-sensitive and resistant strains.
