        New Drug Development using Korean Herbal Formulae: A model role study

        Objectives:Traditional Korean herbal formulae are composed of multiple medicinal plants. This situation of multiple-ingredient mixtures has been considered as a major obstacle to new drug development using herbal formulae in the world market, despite the effectiveness of such mixtures. This study reviewed Liv-52 as a representative model of successful drug development using a multiple-herb mixture. Methods:All articles for Liv-52 were collected from the PubMed database. The history, composition of Liv-52, its pharmaceutical efficacy and mechanisms, and data from clinical studies including its market size were analyzed. Results:Liv-52 is composed of seven herbal plants and it is the best known in Ayurvedic medicine for treating liver disorders. Since its 1955 introduction, forty four international papers have been published based on pre-clinical and clinical trials. The efficacy and mechanisms of Liv-52 were intensively studied. Currently, Liv-52 is one of the top-selling products, with over 10 million dollars sales annually, in the world market. Conclusions:These results indicate that Korean herbal formulae could be new global drugs if scientific evidence for efficacy and standardization are produced via literature researches.

      • 『靑城雑記』に反映された朝日の關連記事の硏究

        Seong Dae-jung , who participated in the 11th Tongsinsa of the late Joseon Dynasty(1763) , demonstrates various perceptions of Japan through ~ 日本錄~ (Il bonrok) and ~춤城雜 記~ (Cheongseongjapgi). Seong Dae-jung overcame the limitations of his status as child of a concubine and established his own awareness of the country of Japan by interacting with various scholars. Seong Dae-jung , who had more vivid knowledge of Japan than anyone else under the pride that he has been involved in the "Tongsinsa" from generation to generation, found information about Japan and learned about it by reading the previous book. In addition, after visiting Japan he developed a sense of foreign countries by listening to the vivid stories of various people who had been to China as members of the ‘ Yeonam Group'. As seen above, ~홈城雜記~ (Cheongseongjapgi) is a book containing miscellaneous records, and various records related to Japan can be found. He mentioned "geumsi(今市)," a place from the Japanese fiction "Samrangjeon," which was popular in Joseon at that time, and introduced "野談" of Japan (an unofficial historical tale) in order to directly reveal his hostility toward Japan after the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. In addition, he wrote an interesting description of the first encounter between Ryu Seong-ryong and Admiral Yi Sun-sin, and described absorbingly the performance of Yi Sun-shin, who played an essential role in the Japanese War. As such , it was confirmed that in W 좁城雜 記Jl (Cheongseongjapgi) there were many records that were difficult to leave in the official works such as "Ilbonrok". In addition, there is a great literary significance since there are either some essays containing fictional factor like ghost stories which are related to the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592 , or unofficial tales that are difficult to appear in history.

        만성 피로를 주증으로 하는 성인 72명의 변증과 체질별 분석 연구

        Objective : This study was conducted to find the relationship between syndrome-differentiation and Sasang-constitution in chronic fatigue patients. Methods : The subjects were 72 adults with chronic fatigue who visited Dunsan Oriental Hospital of Daejeon University between March 2007 and April 2007. Their main complaint was fatigue for longer than 6 months and they did not have any physical or mental problems. We measured their fatigue degree by using Chalder fatigue scale and health habits. To evaluate relationship between syndrome-differentiation with sasang-constitution, The patients were divided into four syndrome-differentiations, such as liver and kidney asthenia of Yin, spleen and kidney deficiency of Yang, deficiency of lung and spleen qi, and deficiency of heart and spleen blood. We also diagnosed Sasang-constitution by using Questionnaire for Sasang Constitution Classification II (QSCCII). Results : Among the 72 patients, 41.4%, 34.5% and 24.1% of belonged in Soyangin, Soeumin and Taeumin respectively. Interestingly, we found a meaningful correlation between syndrome-differentiation and physiological function by Sasang-constitution. Conclusion : The result may help Oriental medicine understanding and treatment of chronic fatigue-related diseases and patients.

      • 抗癌丹을 投與한 各種 癌患者 320例에 對한 考察

        The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of Hangamdan(抗癌丹). The clinical study was carried out 320 cases of patients with cancer treated by Hangamdan(抗癌丹) from May 1st 1998 to September 1st 1999. The results were summarized as follows; 1. The effects of improvement in the symptoms with traditional oriental cancer therapy(47.6%) were higher than combined treatment of western and oriental therapy(37.4%). 2. In the analysis of hematology, maintenance and increasing of WBC(86.2%), Hgb(87.2%), Platelet(97.6%) RBC(81.1%) were Observed. In the analyses of tumor marker, maintenance and decreasing of CEA(76%), CA19-9(88.8%), AFP(69.2%) were observed. 3. In the analysis of safety, maintenance and decreasing of AST(93.1%), AL.T(95%), BUN(92.2%), Creatinine(93.6%) were observed. 4. In the analysis of QOL attached by cancer, combined treatment of western and oriental therapy(maintenance and improvement; 91.8%) was higher than traditional oriental cancer therapy(maintenance and improvement; 79.3%) 5. In the analysis of survival in patients with terminal cancer, above 6 months(46.3%), 12 months( 19.2%). 6. In the analysis of antitumor effects, combined treatment of western and oriental therapy(maintenance 71.6% improvement 12.8%) was higher than traditional oriental therapy (maintenance 66.7% improvement 9.5%). 7. In the analysis of curative evaluation, combined treatment of western and oriental therapy(maintenance 40.4% improvement 41.8%) was higher than traditional oriental therapy (maintenance 23.8% improvement 46.1%). 8. In the analysis of IL-12 and IFN-γ attached by cancer, increasing of IL-12(32.3%), IFN-γ(41.5%) were observed. From the above results, it is suggested that Hangamdan has significant effects of antitumor and immune activity, also could be usefully applied for cancer patients by combination with western therapy or alone.

        암 관련 삶의 질 평가도구에 관한 연구 현황

        The importance of measurement of health-related quality of life (HRQL) cannot be overemphasized. However, efforts to implement HRQL measurement often fail because of differences in definition and insufficient information about available measures. In this paper, many available HRQL measures are reviewed, which have been designed for, or frequently used with, people with cancer in order to aid in the evaluation of effects of oriental medicine on cancer patients. A total of 28 articles were selected from three different databases. The selected articles were analyzed according to three aspects of application of the Korean version of HRQL measures, namely generic, disease specific and symptoms related instruments. Nine HRQL measures are completed with Korean validation and data collection under contact and permission of the author. However, research studies that reported data on quality of life (QOL) in cancer patients treated with oriental medicine were wholly lacking. It is recommended that further studies be performed, using methods of data collection whose validity and reliability has been confirmed.

        심층강화학습을 이용한 Convolutional Network 기반 전산화단층영상 잡음 저감 기술 개발

        전산화단층영상 품질 개선을 위해 사용되는 지도학습 기반의 딥러닝 기술은 사전 학습을 위해 많은 양의 데이터를 필요로 하는 단점이 있다. 또한 지도학습 기반의 딥러닝 기술은 학습에 사용된 영상의 특징과 학습된 모델에 입력된 영상의 특징이 다른 경우 영상 내부 구조적 왜곡이 유발되는 한계점이 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존 지도학습 기반 딥러닝 기술의 단점을 보완하고 전산화단층영상의 잡음을 감소시킬 수 있는 심층강화학습 기반 영상화 모델을 개발하였다. 심층강화학습 기반 영상화 모델은 shared, value 및 policy 네트워크로 구성하였으며, 영상 잡음 특징 추출 및 모델의 성능 향상을 위해 합성곱, rectified linear unit(ReLU) 활성화 함수, dilation factor 및 게이트순환유닛을 사용하였다. 또한 기존 지도학습 기반 딥러닝 기술을 통해 획득한 영상의 영상품질 비교를 통해 본 연구에서 개발한 영상화 모델의 성능을 평가하였다. 연구결과 기존 기술에 비해 본 연구에서 개발한 영상화 모델 적용 시 전산화단층영상의 정량적 정확도는 큰 폭으로 향상, 잡음은 큰 폭으로 감소함을 확인하였다. 또한 영상화 모델 학습 시 사용한 영상과 구조적 특징이 다른 영상에 대해서도 잡음 감소 효과를 확인하였다. 따라서 본 연구에서 개발한 심층강화학습 기반 영상화 모델을 통해 전산화단층영상의 구조적 특징을 보전함과 동시에 잡음을 감소시킬 수 있다. Supervised deep learning technologies for improving the image quality of computed tomography (CT) need a lot of training data. When input images have different characteristics with training images, the technologies cause structural distortion in output images. In this study, an imaging model based on the deep reinforcement learning (DRL) was developed for overcoming the drawbacks of the supervised deep learning technologies and reducing noise in CT images. The DRL model was consisted of shared, value and policy networks, and the networks included convolutional layers, rectified linear unit (ReLU), dilation factors and gate rotation unit (GRU) in order to extract noise features from CT images and improve the performance of the DRL model. Also, the quality of the CT images obtained by using the DRL model was compared to that obtained by using the supervised deep learning model. The results showed that the image accuracy for the DRL model was higher than that for the supervised deep learning model, and the image noise for the DRL model was smaller than that for the supervised deep learning model. Also, the DRL model reduced the noise of the CT images, which had different characteristics with training images. Therefore, the DRL model is able to reduce image noise as well as maintain the structural information of CT images.
