        A New Interfacial Model for Transverse Mechanical Properties of Unidirectional Fiber Reinforced Composites

        Transverse mechanical properties play an important role in the study of fiber reinforced composite materials. Anexperimental and numerical study on mechanical properties and damage behavior of unidirectional fiber reinforcedcomposites under transverse load is presented. The quasi-static tensile and compressive tests were carried out to obtainmechanical properties of unidirectional fiber reinforced composites under transverse tension and compression. The fracturemorphologies of the specimens were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to reveal their distinct damagemechanism. Considering the effects of interface, a new interfacial model is proposed. Two representative volume elements(RVEs) of basic and interfacial models are established for comparison analysis. The predicted results agree well with theexperimental data. The introduction of interfacial layer has little effect on the prediction of transverse modulus, but canimprove the accuracy of the predicted transverse strength. The fiber volume fraction has a great influence on the transversemechanical properties of unidirectional fiber reinforced composites. As the fiber volume fraction increases, its transversemodulus increases, but both the transverse strength and the ultimate strain decrease.

        Against AIDS : Economic Analysis on Chinese Rural Women

        The Chinese government has realized that the spread of HIV/AIDS will finally set off the fruits of economic development. The disease begins from the weak, and then spreads quickly to every stratum of the population, which leads to irremediable shortage of human resources and eventually the stagnation and even retrogression of economic growth. The difficulty to control it is that this incurable disease will go into human social behavior, grow in the weak links of the society and entangle many other problems into a complicated vicious circle. Poverty, ignorance and indifference upon the weak have become the main reasons for the rapid spread of AIDS. Therefore, AIDS is regarded as the adjunct of social injustice, and consequently the protection of the weak has been attached unprecedented importance. At present, the spread of AIDS in China is wide spread in some places and among special groups. The AIDS patients are mainly from the rural areas, since drug abusers, prostitutes and those who sell blood are also mainly concentrated in the rural areas. Women, the most vulnerable group, are at the beginning of the vicious circle. The vulnerable position of rural women makes them the group most easily infected by AIDS and then the new source of infection. To effectively control the spread of the disease, it is necessary to attach great attention to this vulnerable group and provide them with effective help. This paper, after analyzing the vulnerability of Chinese rural women, points out the importance of maintaining social justice and protecting the vulnerable groups in preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS in China.

        The genus Cephonodes from Xisha islands, Hainan Province, China, with description of a new species Cephonodes sanshaensis Deng & Huang, 2023 sp. nov. (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae)

        A new species, Cephonodes sanshaensis Deng & Huang, sp. nov. is described from Xisha islands nearSansha City, China. Photographs of the adults and their genitalia are provided. The new species is similarto C. hylas (Linnaeus, 1771) and C. picus (Cramer, 1777) but can be easily distinguished by characters in themale genitalia: the right lobe of the uncus is hook-shaped with distinctly acute apex, the left valva is longand narrow with a truncate apex, and the right valva is broad and knife-shaped. Molecular analysis basedon cytochrome c oxidase I gene barcode sequences is used to infer the phylogenetic position of the newspecies within the genus Cephonodes. An updated key and checklist to the worldwide species of thegenus Cephonodes are also provided.

      • The Naive Bayesian Algorithm-based Prisoner’s Dilemma Game Model

        Prisoners’ dilemma is a typical game theory issue. In this study, it was treated as an incomplete information game to establish a related machine learning model using a naive Bayesian classification method. The model established was referred to as the Bayes model. Using this model, the incomplete information game was soluble with the assistance of statistical machine learning. This study proceeded as follows: firstly, four typical models were run against the Bayes model some 10,000 times. The total incomes of the models recorded suggested that Bayes model was more advantageous than other models. Even in a multi-player prisoners’ game, Bayes model also presented the desired level of performance and accrued a higher income than other models. Further statistical analysis implied that the Bayes model and the widely accepted optimum strategy tit-for-tat (TFT) model showed a tendency to be prone to defection. Secondly, according to the games run on the natural Bayes model, as well as the natural TFT model, it was found that the Bayes model accrued more benefits than the TFT model on average. Finally, comparison of the Bayes model with the TFT model revealed that the Bayes model was better. This demonstrated the efficacy of the Bayes model constructed in this study and moreover, provided a novel idea for solving the problem of an incomplete information game.

        Pulsed laser deposition of refractive-index-graded broadband antireflection coatings for silicon solar cells

        This paper reports the design, fabrication and characterization of broadband antireflection coatings for silicon-based solar cells, using a graded-index technique and a novel dual-beam pulsed laser deposition method. A graded refractive index was realized by mixing two different optical materials, silicon and soda-lime glass, in a way that the composition of the mixture changes gradually from silicon (that of the solar cell) to glass (that of the outside protective glass) along the coating thickness direction following pre-designed refractive-index profiles. In this study, two different refractive-index profiles were fabricated, linear and Southwell profiles, on silicon substrates. In order to emulate a protective cover glass for solar-cells, coatings with an additional 400nm-thick outer glass layer were also fabricated. The antireflection coatings showed reflectance of 2.2-5.5% (mostly around 4%) for a wavelength range of 400-1000nm, and for the Southwell profile with a top glass layer, the reflectance was found to be between 2.2% and 4%, which is believed to be close to the theoretically best antireflection performance of a solar cell with a cover glass. Finite-difference time-domain simulations were also performed and the numerical results were in line with the measurement results. Because these coatings are based on silicon and glass and can be fabricated by the one-step pulsed laser deposition procedure, it can simplify the solar-cell structure considerably. The fabricated antireflection coatings may be also used for many other optical applications, such as thin-film optical attenuator and some optical sensors, and the presented pulsed laser deposition method is capable of fabricating a variety of high-performance optical coatings, which cannot be fabricated by other methods.

      • Large eddy simulation of shock vector control using bypass flow passage

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A detail description of the unsteady phenomena of three-dimensional shock vector control (SVC), including recirculation zones and shear layer regions, has been presented in this study. Shock vector control is a really efficient way to achieve flight direction control of high speed vehicle. Large eddy simulation (LES) has been applied to capture the unsteady characteristics of SVC method using bypass flow passage. Comparison of RANS and LES has been conducted in this study. LES model shows better results than others and it is able to capture the unsteady process very well. In this study, the separation bubble upstream of the injection port is the main source of flow unsteadiness. Large scale eddies in the whole flow field have been resolved by the LES model. Unsteady characteristics of SVC method at different nozzle pressure ratios (NPR) have been investigated. The time histories of thrust vector angle at different NPRs have been recorded by the LES model. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve SVC with the range of bypass mass flow ratio less than 7%. It is also revealed that nozzle pressure ratio has a strong effect on the unsteady phenomenon of SVC system.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Unsteady phenomenon of shock vector control. </LI> <LI> Large eddy simulation. </LI> <LI> Vortexes in the separation bubble. </LI> </UL> </P>

        Legal Analyses of the Korea–Japan JDA Implementation Dilemma: Stalemate and a Way Out

        The 1974 joint development agreement between Korea and Japan established an innovative cooperation regime in the East China Sea. According to the agreement, Korea is obligated to conduct jointly with Japan in the defined zone, but Japan holds a negative stance on the potential reservation, leading to a deadlock on commercial activities. The reasons for the stalemate are, on the one hand, due to a lack of motivation because no commercial products pay back, and on the other because the mechanism of the agreement does not envisage a straightforward solution to the predicament. Compared with the 1970s, the incompatible legal positions on the maritime boundaries and vexed political geographical relations between the coastal States make the Joint Development Zone more controversial. This study identifies alternative approaches based on thorough analyses of political and legal factors such as joint development regime, evolving rules of international law, bilateral cooperation, and regional relations.
