Lattice Modulation in YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5 Studied by Using Synchrotron Radiation X-rays

RMn2O5 (R = Y and rare earth) shows successive magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions at about 45 K, 40 K, 39 K, 20 K and 10 K and is called a multiferroic compound. We have investigated the lattice modulation vectors (qL) of YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5 by using single crystal Synchrotron Radiation X-ray diraction and compared them with the magnetic propagation vectors (qM) studied by neutron diraction. The relation of the propagation vectors between magnetic materials and dielectrics is found to be qL = 2qM. A preliminary structure analysis of the atomic displacement pattern in the commensurate ferroelectric phase of TbMn2O5 is discussed.fb

The memory compression algorithm CCC-LCP (color-count-controlled local color palette) reduces flicker in the liquid crystal display (LCD) overdrive. Its compression ratio is 1:5.4 for 10-bit images, with a 33 dB PSNR peak signal-to-noise ratio and with five times flicker reduction compared with the block truncation coding. The authors' two-alternative forced choice subjective tests proposed two new soundness properties, the 'CMP harmlessness' and 'OD non-lost (or OD liveliness)', to clarify the functional interaction between the overdrive functionality OD and the compression functionality CMP. The tests verified that CCC-LCP is practically applicable (at a 1.2H viewing distance threshold) for 42" 37-ppi WXGA TVs.

The cytosolic members of the HSP70 family of proteins play key roles in the molecular chaperone machinery of the cell. In the study we cloned and sequenced the full-length cDNA of Delia antiqua HSP70 gene, which is 2461 bp long and encodes 643 a.a. with a calculated molecular mass of 70,787 Da. We investigated gene copies of cytosolic HSP70 members of 4 insect species with complete genome available, and found that they are quite variable with species. In order to characterize this protein we carried out an alignment and a phylogenetic analysis with 41 complete protein sequences from insects. The analysis divided the cytosolic members of the family into two classes, HSP70 and HSC70, distinguishable on the basis of 15 residues. HSP70 class members were slightly shorter in length and smaller in molecular mass relative to the HSC70 class members, and the conservative and functional regions in these sequences were documented. Mainly, we investigated the expression of Delia antiqua HSP70 gene, in response to diapauses and thermal stresses. Both summer and winter diapauses elevated HSP70 transcript levels. Cold-stress led to increased HSP70 expression levels in summer- and winter-diapausing pupae, but heat-stress elevated the levels only in the winter-diapausing pupae. In all cases, the expression levels, after being elevated, gradually decreased with time. HSP70 expression was low in non-diapausing pupae but was up-regulated following cold- and heat-stresses. Heat-stress gradually increased the mRNA level with time whereas cold-stress gradually decreased levels after an initial increase.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The effect of Li<SUP>+</SUP> addition at the interface of a 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(fluorosulfonyl)amide ([C<SUB>2</SUB>mim][FSA]) room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) and a Pt electrode is investigated by infrared-visible sum-frequency generation (IV-SFG) vibrational spectroscopy. Addition of Li<SUP>+</SUP> to the Pt|[C<SUB>2</SUB>mim][FSA] system results in the extension of the electrochemical window (EW) by >1.0V at its negative edge. The potential dependence of the SF signal reveals that the [FSA]<SUP>−</SUP> anion of neat [C<SUB>2</SUB>mim][FSA] is desorbed at −1.5V while it remains in place even at −2.0V when Li<SUP>+</SUP> is added. The SFG spectra indicate that the [FSA]<SUP>−</SUP> anion at the Pt|[C<SUB>2</SUB>mim][FSA] interface interacts with Li<SUP>+</SUP> at the interface with the negatively-charged Pt electrode. This [FSA]<SUP>−</SUP> anion layer anchored through Li<SUP>+</SUP> suppresses [C<SUB>2</SUB>mim]<SUP>+</SUP> cation adsorption on the negatively-charged Pt electrode, resulting in a wider electrochemical window.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Li<SUP>+</SUP> addition to Pt|[C<SUB>2</SUB>mim][FSA] extends EW by >1V at the negative edge. </LI> <LI> IV-SFG directly probes the presence of [FSA]<SUP>−</SUP> on Pt. </LI> <LI> Without Li<SUP>+</SUP>, [FSA]<SUP>−</SUP> desorbs from Pt at −1.0V. </LI> <LI> Li<SUP>+</SUP> is adsorbed on Pt to anchor [FSA]<SUP>−</SUP> to suppress [C2mim]<SUP>+</SUP> adsorption at −2.0V. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

(K0.88Na0.12)NbO3 (KNN) thick films with various thicknesses were prepared on Ni-based metal substrates by hydrothermal method. Although the deposition of KNN films was hardly observed directly on metal substrates until 12 h, the amount of KNN films deposited on both SrRuO3/LaNiO3- and SrRuO3-covered Ni based metal substrates increased to about 5 μm with increasing deposition time above 3 h. X-ray diffraction studies confirmed the formation of {100}c- and randomly-oriented KNN films on SrRuO3/LaNiO3- and SrRuO3-covered metal substrates, respectively. Ferroelecctric property studies revealed an improved remanent polarization and an improved piezoelectric response of {100}c-oriented KNN films over the randomly-oriented KNN films. In addition, the values for {100}c-oriented KNN films were similar to those of {100}c-oriented epitaxial KNN films prepared on (100)cSrRuO3//SrTiO3 substrates.
