Overt Wh-Word Fronting in Korean Revisited

YoungSik Choi 현대문법학회 2019 현대문법연구 Vol.101 No.-

The nature of fronted wh-words in Korean type languages has been a topic of great controversy, with the widely held assumption being that they behave in a uniform fashion (Hoji 1985, Saito 1989, Takahashi 1993, 1994, Choe 1994, Cheng 1997, Bošković 1999). I challenge this common view, following the original proposal by Choi (2007b), claiming that the fronted wh-words in Korean are a heterogeneous set in that indefinite wh-words constitute focus movement, whereas the non-indefinite adjunct wh-word way ‘why’ is wh-movement. The heterogeneous nature of the fronted wh-words nicely deals with the contrast in superiority and wh-island effects along with the contrast in the cleft construction.

Coexistence of Closely Packed c(4 × 2) and Striped Phases in Self-Assembled Monolayers of Decylthiocyanates on Au(111)

        Youngsik Choi,강훈구,Inchang Choi,Nam-Suk Lee,Jun-Hyung Cho,Chang-Hyun Jang,노재근 대한화학회 2010 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.31 No.4

Decylthiocyanate (DTC) self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on Au(111) were prepared by solution and vapor phase deposition methods at 50 oC for 24 h. The formation and surface structure of DTC SAMs were examined using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM imaging revealed that DTC SAMs formed in 1 mM ethanol solution at 50 oC were composed of small ordered domains with lateral dimensions of a few nanometers and disordered phases, whereas DTC SAMs formed in the vapor phase at 50 oC contained two ordered phases: a closely packed c(4 × 2) superlattice and a striped phase with an interstripe spacing of 2.6 - 2.8 nm. It was also found that the ordered domain and vacancy island formation for DTC SAMs on Au(111) differs significantly from that of decanethiol SAMs, suggesting that adsorption mechanism is different from each other. From this study, it was confirmed that DTC SAMs with a high degree of structural order can be obtained by vapor phase deposition.

The Structure of caki and Implication for Null Argument

YoungSik Choi 현대문법학회 2013 현대문법연구 Vol.73 No.-

It has been a common view in the literature since Yang (1984, 1988) that caki ‘self' is a long distance anaphor, subject to parameterizaton of the binding domain across languages. I suggest that caki ’self' is a local anaphor with a DP structure including pro. I also suggest that a null argument in Korean has a DP structure with pro, too, based on the wide range of similarities with caki ‘self.' The present proposal for caki ’self' and the null argument has a nontrivial theoretical implication for anaphors and null arguments in languages typologically akin to Korean.

        Adjectives in Korean are NOT

        ( Youngsik Choi ) 대한언어학회 2019 언어학 Vol.27 No.1

I argue that putative adjectives in Korean do not form a separate syntactic category but fall into the category of verbs. I critically review the arguments for the adjectives in Korean as a separate syntactic category, and present various arguments against them. I further go on to argue that putative adjectives in prenominal position are not attributive adjectives, but actually verbs, forming a relative clause and thus behaving as predicatives. It will be shown that the various interpretations of putative adjectives in Korean in the prenominal position follow from the present proposal.

Locality in So Called Sluicing in Korean: Null Argument and Beyond

        ( Youngsik Choi ) 한국현대언어학회 2015 언어연구 Vol.31 No.2

In this paper, I investigate so called sluicing constructions in Korean that involve syntactic islands. I suggest that so called sluicing constructions turn out to be pseudo-sluicing constructions with copular structures that includes a null argument, thus with no island violation triggered quite contrary to appearance. I also argue against the claim that subjacency is a PF constraint and that deletion of the IP including the wh-trace within the island remedies subjacency violation (Fox and Lasnik 2003, among others). The present research on the so called sluicing constructions in Korean is consistent with the standard assumption in the literature that subjacency is a syntactic constraint (Chomsky 1977, 1981, 1986, 1995, 2000, 2001). It also has a non-trivial implication for sluicing constructions in English as well. (Soonchunhyang University)

Gapping in V+ko construction in Korean as dependent ellipsis

        ( Youngsik Choi ) 대한언어학회 2019 언어학 Vol.27 No.3

It has been argued that Korean has two types of V+ko coordinate constructions: the tensed V+ko construction and the un-tensed V+ko construction. I claim only the former constitutes a genuine instance of coordination structure, diverging from the common view (Yoon 1993, 1994, 1997, Chung 2001, 2005, Kim and Cho 2012, Jung 2016, among others). I will show that gapping in Korean conforms to the cross-linguistic generalization that it elides the tensed verb in a conjunct coordinated with another clause containing the same verb. I propose dependent ellipsis for the analysis of gapping in Korean, an idea as originally proposed by Williams (1997), Ackema and Szendröi, (2002) and Hernández (2007), among others, for English gapping. The striking common aspects of gapping in English and Korean reflect a common mechanism of dependent ellipsis beyond the superficial difference in the directionality of gapping as attributed to the word order parameters of the universal grammar.

      • Formation of long-range-ordered self-assembled monolayers of dodecyl thiocyanates on Au(111) via ambient-pressure vapor deposition

        Choi, Youngsik,Seong, Sicheon,Son, Young Ji,Han, Seulki,Ito, Eisuke,Mondarte, Evan Angelo Quimada,Chang, Ryongsok,Hayashi, Tomohiro,Hara, Masahiko,Noh, Jaegeun Elsevier 2019 Colloids and surfaces. A, Physicochemical and engi Vol.583 No.-

Abstract

The surface structure, binding condition, and reductive desorption behavior of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of dodecyl thiocyanate (DDTC, C12–SCN) on Au(111) formed via solution and ambient-pressure vapor depositions at 50 °C for 24 h were examined by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and cyclic voltammetry (CV). STM imaging clearly revealed that adsorption of DDTC molecules on Au(111) in a 1 mM ethanol solution led to the formation of short-range-ordered dodecanethiolate (C12S) SAMs with a domain size ranging from several nanometers to 20 nm, whereas the SAMs formed via vapor deposition had long-range-ordered C12S SAMs of size exceeding 60 nm, which were characterized as having a (4 × √3)rect packing structure. XPS measurements showed that the DDTC SAMs formed via vapor deposition on Au(111) contained approximately one-fourth the amount of unbound sulfurs and CN species compared to solution-deposited SAMs. CV measurements also showed that vapor-deposited SAMs had a sharp reductive desorption peak at −1.028 V, whereas solution-deposited SAMs had two broad desorption peaks at −0.671 and −0.946 V, implying that vapor-deposited SAMs are more uniform and electrochemically stable. The present results clearly demonstrate that DDTC SAMs on Au(111) with a high degree of structural order, homogeneous interface, and high electrochemical stability can be prepared by ambient-pressure vapor deposition.

Graphical abstract

[DISPLAY OMISSION]

        Argument Negative Polarity Item Redux

YoungSik Choi 현대문법학회 2012 현대문법연구 Vol.68 No.-

Mismatch or non-isomorphic mapping between form and function is prevalent in natural languages. English is no exception in this respect. It displays various instances of mismatch phenomena that can be classified into two main groups: complexity and content mismatch. This paper discusses several instances of these two types of mismatch in English and sketches how the lexicalist grammar with parallel architecture can license such non-isomorphic relations or no direct correspondences between form and meaning.

Diagnosing Sluicing Constructions in Korean: Sluicing, Cleft, or What?

        ( Choi Youngsik ) 한국현대언어학회 2019 언어연구 Vol.34 No.4

The Journal of Studies in Language 34.4, 673-687. This paper claims that sluicing constructions in Korean do not involve sluicing contra Takahashi (1993, 1994). It will furthermore be demonstrated that sluicing constructions are not cleft constructions (Nishiyama, Whitman, and Yi 1996, and Park 2001 among others), using the diagnoses by Merchant (2001). It will be demonstrated that the two major arguments of the cleft approach for Korean sluicing constructions, namely, ‘parallels in case’ and ‘optional copula’ cannot be arguments for the cleft approach, which just follows from the present proposal of the non-elliptical wh-question for Korean sluicing constructions. It will also be demonstrated that the present proposal sufficiently deals with postposition stranding in Korean sluicing constructions for which the cleft approach fails. The current proposal has a nontrivial implication on the typology of sluicing constructions across languages: non-elliptical wh-question in addition to sluicing and cleft. (Soonchunhyang University)

Influence of Explosive Weight and Steel Thickness on Behavior of Steel Plates

Choi, Youngsik,Lee, Joonwon Korean Society for Precision Engineering 2015 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.16 No.3

The effective design of protective structures demands an understanding of complex physics processes involving various parameters. Thus, a considerable amount of test data is required. Because direct tests are usually very expensive, analytical methods have been used instead. Extensive analytical studies have been conducted on the effective design of steel structures. However, studies are limited on the influence of explosion conditions on the behavior of steel structures, which is the primary subject of this study. This study investigated the effects of explosive weight and steel thickness on the behavior of steel plates. It was found that explosive weight and steel thickness significantly influence the midpoint displacement, while the explosive weight changes the size and shape of the separated and remaining parts.
