Regional TMPRSS2 V197M Allele Frequencies Are Correlated with COVID-19 Case Fatality Rates

Coronavirus disease, COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 2019), caused by SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2), has a higher case fatality rate in European countries than in others, especially East Asian ones. One potential explanation for this regional difference is the diversity of the viral infection efficiency. Here, we analyzed the allele frequencies of a nonsynonymous variant rs12329760 (V197M) in the TMPRSS2 gene, a key enzyme essential for viral infection and found a significant association between the COVID-19 case fatality rate and the V197M allele frequencies, using over 200,000 present-day and ancient genomic samples. East Asian countries have higher V197M allele frequencies than other regions, including European countries which correlates to their lower case fatality rates. Structural and energy calculation analysis of the V197M amino acid change showed that it destabilizes the TMPRSS2 protein, possibly negatively affecting its ACE2 and viral spike protein processing.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>This study reports the temperature-dependent strength improvement and retardation in Ca(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>-Na<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>3</SUB>-activated fly ash binders with sugar. Without sugar, the system exhibited rapid stiffening due to the calcite formation. The addition of sugar clearly removed the false set; however, at room temperature, it retarded strength development because the calcium complexation of sugar inhibits the dissolved calcium ions from participating in calcite and C-S-H formation. However, at 90 °C, the use of sugar significantly improved the compressive strength by increasing the (1) degree of dissolution of fly ash and Ca(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>, (2) C-S-H formation, and (3) reduction of overall pore size and volume.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Fly ash was activated with Ca(OH)<SUB>2</SUB>, Na<SUB>2</SUB>CO<SUB>3</SUB>, and sugar at different temperatures. </LI> <LI> The use of sugar delayed the rapid set of the cementless binder at room temperature. </LI> <LI> At the high curing temperature, the use of sugar improved the strength of the binder. </LI> <LI> The high temperature removed calcium complexation of sugar, increasing strength. </LI> </UL> </P>
Common occurrence of internal repeat symmetry in membrane proteins

<P>Symmetry plays significant roles in protein structure and function. Particularly, symmetric interfaces are known to act as switches for two-state conformational change. Membrane proteins often undergo two-state conformational change during the transport process of ion channels or the active/inactive transitions in receptors. Here, we provide the first comprehensive analyses of internal repeat symmetry in membrane proteins. We examined the known membrane protein structures and found that, remarkably, nearly half of them have internal repeat symmetry. Moreover, we found that the conserved cores of these internal repeats are positioned at the interface of symmetric units when they are mapped on structures. Because of the large sequence divergence that occurs between internal repeats, the inherent symmetry present in protein sequences often has only been detected after structure determination. We therefore developed a sensitive procedure to predict the internal repeat symmetry from sequence information and identified 4653 proteins that are likely to have internal repeat symmetry. A particle sizer was developed for real-time monitoring of suspended particles in chemical mechanical polishing (CMP) slurries to prevent any damage caused by coarse particles in the CMP process. Laser-induced light scattering from individual particles was utilized to monitor the concentration and size distribution of suspended particles in the CMP slurries, because monitoring is crucial for achieving higher than 80 % of chip yields by controlling the slurries. The particle sizer, termed as PrimeSizer_SM Micro, consists of an integrated fluid system and optical sensing component. The PrimeSizer_SM Micro was calibrated using commercially available standard polystyrene-latex (PSL) particles with sizes in the range of 0.15-0.5 µm. Performance was evaluated in terms of the PSL particle size distribution. Two types of CMP slurries, containing silica and ceria particles, were analyzed using the PrimeSizer_SM Micro. The results revealed the size distributions and concentrations of the CMP slurries.

초저전력 통신 단말의 장시간 작동 시 발생하는 환경적 변화요인 분석

최근 무선 단말들의 제한된 에너지를 효율적으로 사용하기 위한 다양한 프로토콜이 연구되었다. WI-SUN은 이러한 초저전력 네트워크 표준 중 하나이다. 기존 Wi-SUN에서의 에너지 효율적인 프로토콜 연구는 단위 시간 당 소모하는 에너지량을 줄이는 경우에만 초점을 맞추고 진행되었기 때문에, 환경적 변화를 충분히 고려하지 않았다. 이로 인하여 실제 운용 단계에서는 아직 충분한 전력을 보유한 장비임에도 불구하고 변화한 환경적 변화에 대응하지 못하여 서비스를 지속할 수 없는 상황이 발생할 수 있다. 본 논문에서는 단말이 수 년 ~ 수십 년 수준으로 동작할 때 네트워크 성능에 영향을 미칠 수 있는 요소들과 그 심각성을 분석한다.
Sentinel-2A 위성자료를 활용한 선박 및 후류 탐지 개선

최근 증가된 해상 교통량의 영향으로 지속적으로 발생하는 선박사고에 대한 신속한 탐지 및 대처가 필요하다. 이를 위해, 광역 범위로 실시간 모니터링이 가능한 위성영상을 기반으로 선박탐지 연구가 활발히 수행되고 있다. 그러나, 분광특성을 활용하여 선박탐지를 수행한 선행연구에서는 후류(Wake) 제거를 수행하지 않아 후류가 선박으로 오탐지될 가능성이 존재한다. 이에 본 연구에서는 Ship Detection Index (SDI)를 이용하여 Sentinel-2A/Multispectral Instrument (MSI) 위성영상에서 선박탐지를 수행하고 선박과 후류의 분광특성 차이를 기반으로 하는Wake Detection Index (WDI)를 활용하여 후류를 제거하였다. 본 연구의 선박탐지 알고리즘의 정확도 검증을 위해 Probability of detection (POD), False alarm rate (FAR) 지수를 활용하였으며, 검증 결과 SDI만 적용한 결과에 비해 POD는 유사하게 나타나고 FAR는 6.4% 개선되었다. It is necessary to quickly detect and respond to ship accidents that occur continuously due to the influence of the recently increased maritime traffic. For this purpose, ship detection research is being actively conducted based on satellite images that can be monitored in real time over a wide area. However, there is a possibility that the wake may be falsely detected as a ship because the wake removal is not performed in previous studies that performed ship detection using spectral characteristics. Therefore, in this study, ship detection was performed using SDI (Ship Detection Index) based on the Sentinel-2A satellite image, and the wake was removed by utilizing the difference in the spectral characteristics of the ship and the wake. Probability of detection (POD) and false alarm rate (FAR) indices were used to verify the accuracy of the ship detection algorithm in this study. As a result of the verification, POD was similar and FAR was improved by 6.4% compared to the result of applying only SDI.
