The Process of Curriculum Renewal of an Intensive English Program

Kim, Gina,Chang, Sunmee The English Teachers Association in Korea 2010 영어어문교육 Vol.16 No.3

The purpose of this paper is to report the process of curriculum renewal of an intensive English program with focus on the perceptions of the people involved. The researcher tries to describe the five years of curriculum change. The data collected through surveys, interviews, and observations were analyzed. The findings show that throughout the years, the students that participated in the program perceived that their English skills have improved. The teachers also thought that the student's overall English skills improved. The satisfaction on the chosen textbooks was higher in the student group than the teacher group. The main goal and objectives of the intensive English program in the study changed in the process of curriculum renewal. The program that launched in order to enhance students' conversational skills in 2004 started to include TOEIC instruction in late 2005 due to students' needs. The students were content with the fact that there were many teachers in the program whereas teachers had neutral opinion. The present study aims to suggest the importance of curriculum renewal through program evaluation which can be applied to similar language programs for the continuity and longevity of the programs.

Effects of Team Teaching in a University Setting : A Preliminary Study

        Kim, Gina,Yu, Jihye 한국현대언어학회 2003 언어연구 Vol.19 No.1

Recently, team teaching in English education has become a subject of attention and research. The present study was motivated by the implementation of team teaching at Korea Nazarene University. Team teaching in this context means that a native speaker of English and a non native speaker of English who teach the same class, cooperate in planning the curriculum, discuss their instructional efficacy and evaluate the students together. The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of team teaching on students' language proficiency in terms of vocabulary and grammar, self-confidence, and anxiety, as well as find out their preferences for team teaching. A total of 356 students took a diagnostic test consisting of 50 items of vocabulary and grammar, and paper-and-pencil surveys, at the beginning and at the end of the semester. It was found that team teaching was more effective in grammar instruction and decreased students' anxiety to some degree, but it was not as effective in increasing students' self-confidence as non team teaching. Additionally, students' preference for team-taught classes was significantly higher at the end of the semester. This study also indicated that the effect of team teaching should be further explored through testing students' oral proficiency and conduction longitudinal research. (Korea Nazarene University)

Providing Reliable Prognosis to Patients with Gastric Cancer in the Era of Neoadjuvant Therapies: Comparison of AJCC Staging Schemata

        Kim, Gina,Friedmann, Patricia,Solsky, Ian,Muscarella, Peter,McAuliffe, John,In, Haejin The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2020 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.20 No.4

Purpose: Patients with gastric cancer who receive neoadjuvant therapy are staged before treatment (cStage) and after treatment (ypStage). We aimed to compare the prognostic reliability of cStage and ypStage, alone and in combination. Materials and Methods: Data for all patients who received neoadjuvant therapy followed by surgery for gastric adenocarcinoma from 2004 to 2015 were extracted from the National Cancer Database. Kaplan-Meier (KM)curves were used to model overall survival based on cStage alone, ypStage alone, cStage stratified by ypStage, and ypStage stratified by cStage. P-values were generated to summarize the differences in KM curves. The discriminatory power of survival prediction was examined using Harrell's C-statistics. Results: We included 8,977 patients in the analysis. As expected, increasing cStage and ypStage were associated with worse survival. The discriminatory prognostic power provided by cStage was poor (C-statistic 0.548), while that provided by ypStage was moderate (C-statistic 0.634). Within each cStage, the addition of ypStage information significantly altered the prognosis (P<0.0001 within cStages I-IV). However, for each ypStage, the addition of cStage information generally did not alter the prognosis (P=0.2874, 0.027, 0.061, 0.049, and 0.007 within ypStages 0-IV, respectively). The discriminatory prognostic power provided by the combination of cStage and ypStage was similar to that of ypStage alone (C-statistic 0.636 vs. 0.634). Conclusions: The cStage is unreliable for prognosis, and ypStage is moderately reliable. Combining cStage and ypStage does not improve the discriminatory prognostic power provided by ypStage alone. A ypStage-based prognosis is minimally affected by the initial cStage.

An Analysis of Studies on Korean Students’ Use of English Language Learning Strategies

        Gina Kim,Eric Hall 한국언어연구학회 2016 언어학연구 Vol.21 No.3

The purpose of this study is to review, analyze, and categorize articles dealing with language learning strategies used among Korean students. Recent articles were selected for the study which deal with strategies used in both ESL and EFL settings. The chosen articles were reviewed and categorized into Oxford’s classification system according to their main focus: (1) memory strategy, (2) cognitive strategy, (3) compensation strategy, (4) metacognitive strategy, (5) affective strategy, and (6) social strategy. The findings indicated that most studies on Korean students provided various examples of students’ tendency to favor compensation strategies and metacognitive strategies over affective and social strategies. The articles were divided into ESL and EFL settings to see whether Korean students used differing strategies based on a particular setting. Suggestions for teaching strategies and future research directions regarding strategies used by Korean students are also provided.

지방사립대 영어영문학과 재학생들의 토익 성적에 미치는 영향요인에 대한 사례 연구

        김지나(Kim, Gina) 한국영어어문교육학회 2020 영어어문교육 Vol.26 No.2

In Korea, the TOEIC test is commonly used in the application for seeking jobs. Therefore, for university students, especially those who major in English, obtaining a high TOEIC score is a huge goal. The purpose of this study was to find out the influencing factors on the TOEIC scores for English majors at a university in Chungnam Province, Korea. A total of 99 students participated in this study. Data were collected by administering a questionnaire with 35 items. The research findings are as follows. More students take the official TOEIC test as their grades get higher and their scores rise significantly. More female students take the test and their scores were higher than male students. Also, the longer the preparation period the higher the score got. The influencing factors between the top 25% and the bottom 25% of the students were the number of tests taken and their goal scores. According to regression analysis, it is indicated that the number of times the students take the test is the predicting factor for the students’ TOEIC scores. Based on the findings, it can be implied that motivation is important in TOEIC and different methods and strategies should be taught and used depending on the students’ TOEIC scores.

영어영문학 전공자들의 토익에 대한 인식 및 태도에 관한 사례 연구

        김지나 ( Kim Gina ),진송화 ( Jin Song-hwa ) 한국현대언어학회 2017 언어연구 Vol.33 No.2

The purpose of this study is to find out English major students` perceptions and attitudes towards the TOEIC. A questionnaire with items to measure the attitudinal factors was administered to 99 students majoring in English at a university in Korea. The findings are as follows: Freshmen and sophomores had more positive perceptions towards TOEIC as a means to enhance/measure English than juniors and seniors. The English majors, regardless of their academic years, consider TOEIC as a societal need, agreeing that the test is necessary for getting decent jobs. They also thought that test-taking skills and pattern-practice based on TOEIC question types help them get higher scores. However, their actual TOEIC scores had no correlation with their perceptions on the test. (Hoseo University)

대학생 집중 토익 프로그램의 효과 및 참가자의 성적 향상 요인 분석 사례 연구

        김지나(Kim, Gina) 한국영어어문교육학회 2014 영어어문교육 Vol.20 No.1

This study aims to find out the effects of an intensive program for college students with a focus on TOEIC score improvement. During the three-week program, 120 students received 76 hours of TOEIC instruction, ten vocabulary tests, daily group study sessions and self-study time, and took two TOEIC mock tests and an official TOEIC test on the same month the program ended. Findings were that 140 points on average rose after the program and the difference was statistically significant. Throughout the program the attendance rate was 94.6% and the regression analysis undertaken to find out the relationship between attendance and percentage increase in TOEIC score proved statistically significant. Other variables such as their student year, gender, the college they attend, and GPA scores were looked into. It is estimated that for similar intensive programs, applicants with better GPAs and the students that have TOEIC scores between 300 and 500 are better candidates. Furthermore, for a successful program, strict attendance policies should be emphasized and daily vocabulary tests are to be given in the morning before classes. Also, various motivational awards should be provided for its success.
