제주국제자유도시 외국어 상용화와 방언보존에 따른 설문지 조사방법론 서설

본 프로젝트는 한국학술진흥재단의 후원을 받아 수행되고 있는 국내외지역연구의 일환으로 수행되고 있다. 연구기간은 2002년 12월 1일부터 2003년 11월 30일까지이다. 연구 언어 분야는 국어(특히, 제주방언), 영어, 일본어 그리고 중국어를 포함한다. 이를 위한 연구진으로 총 7명의 연구원과 4명의 연구 보조원이 참여하고 있다. 연구의 주된 내용은 '제주국제자유도시에서 외국어 상용화와 국어교육의 강화 및 향후 과제'에 그 초점이 맞춰지고 있다. 본 연구를 위해서 본 연구팀에서는 다양한 학술세미나의 개최를 비롯한 다양한 학술 활동을 계획하고 있으며, 이 연구를 통해 기대되어지는 효과를 간략히 언급하면 다음과 같다

This paper examined how a Korean-American NEST produces her stories to live by in the context of a Korean university in which ‘nativeness’ and ‘whiteness’ factors have much values on native English speaking teachers. The teacher stories of a Korean-American NEST were analysed, interpreted and understood under narrative inquiry method (Clandinin & Connelly, 2000). As a result of the study, four implications from her narrative emerged: Firstly, she constructed valuable meanings about being a teacher. Secondly, she did not feel any type of inequality or discrimination as an ESOL teacher of color in the Korean school context. Thirdly, she shaped very positive meanings in ‘being viewed as Korean’ as living in the Korean university context as a NEST. Lastly, she negotiated her NEST identities with cultural characteristics, not with color of face. The study expects positive resonance in all teachers’ minds, thus leading them to think about ‘who I am,’ and ‘who I am becoming’.

The purpose of this study was to investigate college students’ perception on English reading anxiety and examined what factors of the English reading anxiety Korean college students perceived. The quantitative as well as qualitative methodologies were applied for this study. For the survey of the study, a total of 115 college students majoring in English participated in the study, and 9 out of those college students who took courses related to English reading participated in the interview which was the main method of the qualitative study. As a result, this study found that the college students perceived the high level of English reading anxiety and they perceived that their English reading anxiety had negative effects on the process of English reading as well as reading proficiency. According to the study, it was indicated that the college students perceived the reading anxiety factors such as lack of self-confidence, the frequent use of bottom-up reading strategy, insufficient of background knowledge, scarcity of vocabulary items, and grammar knowledge. Based on the results of the study, several implications and limitations were discussed.
