Taking Gender Seriously : Feminization of Nonstandard Work in Korea and Japan

LEE, Joohee Ewha Womans University Press 2004 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.10 No.1

This paper analyzes the nature and challenges of growing nonstandard employment in Korea and Japan through the lens of gender. Among the OECD countries, Korea and Japan represent the worst cases of gender gaps in employment, and have very high rates of female workers in nonstandard employment. Based on an analytical framework, whereby national differences in the gendered nature of nonstandard work can be investigated, this study compares feminization of nonstandard work in Korea and Japan and makes the following three conclusions of practical importance. First, social policies designed to help workers to balance work and family must be accompanied by legislation that regulates nonstandard work. Second, a coordinated industrial relations' system is necessary to properly implement legislative efforts. Finally, the trade union movements in both Korea and Japan must improve their representative functions for women workers.

Policosanol suppresses tumor progression in a gastric cancer xenograft model

        Lee Sunyi,Lee Ga Seul,Moon Jeong Hee,Jung Joohee 한국독성학회 2022 Toxicological Research Vol.38 No.4

Gastric cancer (GC) is the most common cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer death, with the fifth highest incidence. The development of effective chemotherapeutic agents is needed to decrease GC mortality. Policosanol (PC) extracted from Cuban sugar cane wax is a healthy functional food ingredient that helps improve blood cholesterol levels and blood pressure. Its various physiological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer activities, have been reported recently. Nevertheless, the therapeutic efficacy of PC in gastric xenograft models is unclear. We aimed to investigate the anticancer effect of PC on human GC SNU-16 cells and a xenograft mouse model. PC significantly inhibited GC cell viability and delayed tumor growth without toxicity in the SNU-16–derived xenograft model. Therefore, we investigated protein expression levels in tumor tissues; the expression levels of Ki-67, a proliferation marker, and cdc2 were decreased. In addition, we performed proteomic analysis and found thirteen differentially expressed proteins. Our results suggested that PC inhibited GC progression via cdc2 suppression and extracellular matrix protein regulation. Notably, our findings might contribute to the development of novel and effective therapeutic strategies for GC.

Gelatinous Transformation of Bone Marrow Mimicking Malignant Marrow-Replacing Lesion on Magnetic Resonance Imaging in a Patient without Underlying Devastating Disease

Lee, Joohee,Yoo, Yeon Hwa,Lee, Sarah,Kim, Hak Sun,Kim, Sungjun Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine 2018 Investigative Magnetic Resonance Imaging Vol.22 No.1

Gelatinous transformation of bone marrow is characterized by hypoplasia of fat cells with focal loss of hematopoietic cells and deposition of extracellular gelatinous substances. It is known to be associated with devastating underlying diseases that starve bone marrow. Here, we present a case of a patient whose magnetic resonance (MR) imaging findings of vertebral column were interpreted as metastasis or hematologic malignancy, however, the final diagnosis revealed a gelatinous transformation of bone marrow. This is the first report of gelatinous transformation of bone marrow without evidence of underlying devastating disease.

Dose-response relationship between cigarette smoking and female sexual dysfunction

( Joohee Choi ),( Dong Wook Shin ),( Seungmee Lee ),( Myung Jae Jeon ),( Sun Min Kim ),( Belong Cho ),( Seung Mi Lee ) 대한산부인과학회 2015 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.58 No.4

Objective: To evaluate whether smoking is a risk factor for female sexual dysfunction (FSD) and to determine the relationship between the cumulative smoking dose and FSD in premenopausal women. Methods: The study population consisted of sexually active premenopausal women. The frequency of FSD and female sexual function index (FSFI) total score were evaluated according to the smoking status (never/former and current smokers). Evaluation of sexual function was done using FSFI questionnaire, and women with FSFI score of ≤26.55 were considered to have FSD. In current smokers, sexual function was also evaluated according to the cumulative smoking dose and nicotine dependency. Results: A total of 900 women were included, and the frequency of current smokers and the frequency of FSD were 62 (6.9%) and 496 (55.1%), respectively. In current smokers, the frequency of FSD was significantly higher and the median total FSFI score was significantly lower than in never/former smokers, and this difference of FSD remained significant after adjustment for confounding variables. Among current smokers, the cumulative smoking dose (pack-years) and the total FSFI score showed negative correlation, in which increased cumulative smoking dose was associated with lower total FSFI score (r=-0.278, P<0.05). In terms of nicotine dependency, the total FSFI score of moderately to heavily nicotine dependent smokers was significantly lower than that of lightly dependent smokers. Conclusion: In premenopausal women, current smoking was an independent risk factor for FSD. And cumulative smoking dose and nicotine dependency were associated with higher risk of FSD.

The reliability of dual rehabilitative ultrasound imaging measurements for muscle co-activation

        ( Joohee Hahn ),( Hyun-geun Ha ),( Hwang-jae Lee ),( Seungyeop Lim ),( Wan-hee Lee ) 물리치료재활과학회 2017 Physical therapy rehabilitation science Vol.6 No.3

Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability of the dual rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (D-RUSI) when simultaneously measuring muscle thickness changes at rest and during co-contraction of the biceps brachii (BB) and triceps brachii (TB). Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: This study included 36 healthy participants (23 men, 13 women). The participants sat on a chair in a comfortable position with a cushion placed under their elbow to maintain a 90-degree elbow flexion angle. The muscle thickness of the biceps brachii and triceps brachii was measured twice using the D-RUSI by two examiners during resting and co-contraction states. One week later, the same procedure was performed once again. Results: The intra-class correlation coefficients (ICCs) for intra-rater reliability ranged from 0.887 to 0.989 and the confidence interval was within an acceptable range of 0.778 to 0.994. The standard error of measurement (SEM) values ranged from 0.303 to 0.866 and the minimal detectable change (MDC) values ranged from 0.84 to 2.40. The ICCs for inter-rater reliability ranged from 0.758 to 0.925. The SEM values ranged from 0.702 to 1.486 and the MDC values ranged from 1.95 to 4.12. Conclusions: The use of the D-RUSI of the BB muscle had a very good intra-rater reliability and very good inter-rater reliability at the resting state, and a, good inter-rater reliability at the co-activation state. ICC values showed very good intra-reliability and inter-reliability for the TB muscle. the D-RUSI is a useful tool for simultaneously measuring the thickness of two muscles when the BB is an agonist and the TB is an antagonist during co-activation of the upper arm.

Stressors, Self-esteem, Social Activities, and Depression

        Joohee Lee,Morgan W. Bradwell,Michelle Brazeal,Timothy A. Rehner,Stephanie T. McLeod 이화여자대학교 이화사회과학원 2018 사회과학연구논총 Vol.34 No.2

This study examined the relationships between current stressors and depressive symptoms among Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) patients who experienced homelessness, with a particular focus on the role of self-esteem and social activities on these relationships. The sample included patients who visited any clinic site of a FQHC in the southern part of Mississippi and qualified for the Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) Program. Assessments included the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), the DUKE Health Profile, and a checklist of stressors. Results of the multivariate analysis using structural equation modeling revealed that ambulation difficulties were related to depressive symptoms directly and indirectly through social activities. SES-related stressors were related to depressive symptoms directly and indirectly through self-esteem and social activities. Relational and legal/police-related stressors were linked to depressive symptoms only through self-esteem. These results indicate the importance of integrated community healthcare services to address the physical, social, and mental healthcare needs of the homeless population.

The Effects of Consumers' Perceived Privacy Control on Perceived Privacy Risk in Location-Based Services

Lee, Joohee,Kim, Songmi,Kim, Wonjoon The Korea Contents Association 2017 International Journal of Contents Vol.13 No.1

The diffusion of advanced mobile technology has introduced new types of personal information or 'location data'. These new data mean new opportunities for businesses, such as location-based services (LBS), but have resulted in new consumer anxieties regarding disclosure of personal information. This study examines the effects of the consumers' perceived control over "time-andplace" information in location-aware services on their perceived privacy risk. A total of 270 respondents participated in this study. Conditions of perceived privacy control were operationalized over time-and-place information, in a $2{\times}2$ factorial design. Results indicate that the perceived control over time-and-place personal information is a significant predictor of perceived risk, and control assurances over time-and-place information enhances the perception of control, thus alleviating the perceived risk. In addition, the effect is much more significant when time and place were combined.

Ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure in two fetuses with airway obstruction

        ( Joohee Lee ),( Mi-young Lee ),( Yeni Kim ),( Jae-yoon Shim ),( Hye-sung Won ),( Euiseok Jeong ),( Byong Sop Lee ),( Ki-soo Kim ),( Woo-jong Choi ),( Yoon Se Lee ) 대한산부인과학회 2018 Obstetrics & Gynecology Science Vol.61 No.3

The ex utero intrapartum treatment (EXIT) procedure was introduced to reduce fetal hypoxic damage while establishing an airway in fetuses with upper and lower airway obstruction. Delivery of the fetal head and shoulders while maintaining the uteroplacental circulation offers time to secure the fetal airway. Here, we report two cases of EXIT procedure for fetal airway obstruction, which were successfully managed with extensive preoperative planning by a professional multidisciplinary team.

Discrepancy Between Desired Time in Bed and Desired Total Sleep Time, Insomnia, Depression, and Dysfunctional Beliefs About Sleep Among the General Population

        Lee Joohee,Cho Inn-Kyu,Kim Kyumin,Kim Changnam,Park C. Hyung Keun,Yi Kikyoung,Chung Seockhoon 대한신경정신의학회 2022 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.19 No.4

Objective The aim of this study was to explore the factors that can influence the severity of insomnia in the general population. We also aimed to examine whether sleep effort mediates the association between dysfunctional beliefs about sleep or the discrepancy between desired time in bed and desired total sleep time (DBST) and insomnia severity in individuals. Methods A total of 387 participants enrolled in this e-survey study. The symptoms were rated using the insomnia severity index (ISI), Patients Health Questionnaire-9 items, Dysfunctional Beliefs about Sleep-2 items, Glasgow Sleep Effort Scale, and Stress and Anxiety to Viral Epidemics-6 items. In addition, we defined a new sleep index named the DBST index. A linear regression analysis was performed to explore the factors predicting ISI scores, and mediation analysis was implemented to explore whether persistent preoccupation with sleep mediated the influence of dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and DBST on insomnia severity. Results A linear regression analysis investigated depression (β=0.17, p<0.001), sleep effort (β=0.50, p<0.001), dysfunctional beliefs about sleep (β=0.13, p=0.001), and DBST (β=0.09, p=0.014) (adjusted R<i>2</i>=0.50, F=65.7, p<0.001). Additionally, we observed that persistent preoccupation with sleep partially mediated the influence of dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and DBST on insomnia severity. Conclusion Depression, preoccupation with sleep, dysfunctional beliefs about sleep, and DBST influenced the insomnia severity of the general population. We also observed that a persistent preoccupation with sleep partially mediated the influence of dysfunctional beliefs about sleep and the DBST index on insomnia severity.
