Today companies actively introduce and utilize information technology with the aim of gaining competitive advantages and enhancing competitiveness, but the majority of IT projects implemented to establish and operate IT infrastructure do not achieve the desire results considering the budget and manpower invested on the projects. Traditionally, the preceding studies considered the physical capital and human capital as the key factors that will determine the organizational performance. In recent years, however, the social capital attract our attention in that the more the social capital such as the relationship, trust and empathy between organizational members, the more likely that the companies achieve successful results. The social capital increases trust between organizational members, which, in turn, causes them to share knowledge and accumulate a wide range of experiences, and thereby they will have confidence in their organization, resulting in a positive effect on the organizational performance ultimately. In other words, the organizational performance in today’s management is determined based on whether the organization has the core capital for achieving desired results and how effectively the organization utilizes the core capital. In this context, there are growing needs for the studies on the strategic importance of the success of IT projects as a competition strategy to gain competitive advantage and sustainable growth and of social capital, yet there are not many studies conducted on the foregoing subjects.
Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the significance in the study of the social capital as the core management resource for today’s corporate management and empirically verify the effect of the social capital in IT project team on project performance with the aim to overcome the limitations of the preceding studies and enhance the academic and practical value of studies. The results of this study can be summarized as follows:
First, the network in IT project team has positive effect on trust and vision-sharing. Second, the vision-sharing and trust in IT project team have a positive effect on knowledge-sharing. Third, the network, vision-sharing and trust in IT project team have a positive effect on knowledge-sharing. Fourth, knowledge-sharing in IT project team has a positive effect on team efficacy. Fifth, the knowledge-sharing in IT project team has a positive effect on project performance. Last, the team efficacy in IT project team has a positive effect on project performance. This study is meaningful in that this study has verified the importance of securing core resources and enhancing competences to ensure the success of IT project and enhance competitiveness and thereby suggest strategic directions to achieve the foregoing objectives.
