China today is economically a member of the G-2, but its cultural-industry power is relatively weak. In the field of animation, it started to draw public attention in the 1990s when it began to get proper evaluation. However, the animation industry in China did not have enough technology to compete with the sophisticated technologies of advanced countries. In the mid-2000s, the Chinese government started to establish various policies regarding the development of its animation industry. Afterwards, with the help of political support and effort, the Chinese animation industry grew in computer hardware assisted by investments and facilities. As a result, the Chinese animation and animation by-products industry expanded its markets in food, toys, apparel, compact discs, and printed materials, which made it possible for the animation industry to draw the public’s attention as a high-value industry. Now, the major obstacle in Chinese animation development is that it lacks experts in core areas such as planning, story manufacturing, high-technology, and marketing. Even considering insufficient governmental support, the level of the Chinese animation industry and its infrastructure, including personnel management, are not as strong as expected.

In order to industrialize and develop animation as a major cultural industry by solving the above problems, it is imperative to train specialists who are equipped with advanced techniques and can see current market situations. The reason is that the animation industry requires specialists who can transfer their creativity and imagination to bring to fruition practical products in the real world.

Recognizing that the animation industry in the 1990s created national wealth, China has made an effort to train such creative experts by opening many animation departments in various colleges with strong support from the government. While colleges in China adopted animation education programs from the US and Japan during their transitional period in the industry, they did not notice and subsequently ignored the problems of those countries.

Since animation experts are trained through education, educational systems are extremely important. Intellectual experts cannot be produced in a short period of time and a small amount of education. Experts should not only have basic knowledge, but be able to deal with the whole course from planning to marketing, while keeping in focus the whole picture of the development of the animation product. Therefore, college programs should be more systematic in the animation industry. Now is the time to evaluate the Chinese animation educational system, develop a more advanced educational model, and to adapt it the Chinese animation industry.

This study first points out the substantial problems found in the goals and curriculum of animation education in China, whose animation industry requires systematic training programs for producing experts to keep pace with the development of industries around the world. It then makes a proposal with supporting points for the development of Chinese animation education.

Toward this end, this study surveys and analyzes the animation education system and situation of China, comparing it with the educational systems of developed countries. It also makes some suggestions for improving Chinese animation education by analyzing the relationship between Chinese animation education and the Chinese animation industry. This study limits its boundary within the following aspects:
    (1) The study provides the background of basic animation education, including animation terms, definitions, practicum, and educational objectives.
    (2) This study makes a curriculum proposal that reflects the characteristics, market demands, prospects, and Chinese animation trends, all of which are essential in the animation industry.
    (3) This study proposes an appropriate curriculum for Chinese colleges by comparing the animation education situations and curriculums of these four countries: China, USA, Japan, and Korea.

This study points out the following problems found in Chinese animation education:
    (1) The animation curricula of Chinese colleges are similar and uniform among themselves. Regardless of their educational goals, their curricula and courses are almost identical. Colleges pursuing industrial values should focus on courses of practical hands-on experience, but they lack such kinds of courses. Colleges seeking production, planning, artistic, and experimental approaches to animation should offer appropriate curriculum, but they are not satisfactory.
    (2) College programs should adapt themselves to the new education paradigm keeping pace with current producing environments of 3D, 4D, etc. The traditional teaching methodology or teaching skills cannot meet the demands of the changing society and knowledge, especially in the field of animation where current knowledge and techniques should be taught to train experts.
    (3) The curriculum of the animation departments of colleges does not offer enough animation classes compared to liberal arts classes. Because of this, the proportion of basic art education classes as well as major classes in the whole program is relatively low. Basic arts education classes are fundamental, but such classes are not enough.
    (4) Colleges should seek functional as well as spatial expansion of the department of animation. The study of animation based on traditional curricula will make the departments of animation shrink. If the animation industry cannot find a stable breakthrough, as did the game industry, its demand will fall drastically.

Based on the results of this study, it is important to prepare a new paradigm in animation education from the long-term point of view for proposing a new system of animation education in China. This study proposes the rearrangement of experts, field-related practicums, and standard courses for flexible curriculum change within t
