Stories have important meaning in human life. Through stories, human lives and experiences are internalized, creating meanings. Education today emphasizes the construction of knowledge in integrated human experiences. In this sense, narratives are magnified as an important subject of educational research.
Even before the development of letters until the contemporary age of images, mankind has has expressed and delivered stories not only through words or letters but also through images. In particular, animation is an art form that should be viewed with attention in the tradition of image presentation. As a composite art related to diverse sensory experience, animation with the unique nature of creating and moving images has important meaning as a medium of narratives in the contemporary society.
This study is aimed at exploring the value and meaning of narratives in the field of collavorative animation creation classes. Today, although animation is reflected on diverse curricula, few educational studies have elaborately focused on the aesthetic nature and formsunique to the animation class itself. Rather, the characteristics and advantages unique to animation classes can be found in the practice of individual classes performed in the related field. These efforts greatly depend on teachers’ personal backgrounds and diverse class situations.
Therefore, this study sought to find the unique meaning and value of animation education from the stories of experiences in classes of teachers who run collaborative animation classes in the field of education. As study method, narrative inquiries on teachers’ experiences were used. The study subjects were two Artist Teachers who ran animation classes in the field of education as animation authors. In addition, the author’s experiences in classes as an elementary school teacher as well as an animation researcher also became a study subject.
The stories of the three teachers’ experiences in animation creation classes could be largely divided into three. Teacher Kim Gi-Nam’s story of experiences in classes was about the process of the teacher’s exploration of class methodologies to make cartoon animations in the joint animation creation class. In this process, the teacher used diverse learning strategies so that all students’ stories and images could be equally reflected on works while the consistency of characters, narratives, and contexts was maintained. Teacher Kang Min-Ji’s story of experiences in classes dealt with the application of experimental animation styles on classes. Students created joint animations in non-linear narrative styles through connections of abstract images. Researchers’ experiences in classes could be considered animation creation projects in connection with school curricula . Toward this end, art forms such as scroll or object animations were utilized.
Through the analyses of these stories of experiences, the educational values of narratives in joint animation creation classes could be analyzed as follows:
First, the narrative strategies of individual animation styles change class processes. To maintain the nature of cartoon animations having classical narratives, the teacher did not lose consistency while drawing students’ common narratives through diverse class processes in one semester. The teacher played the role of a director. In the case of experimental animation classes, impromptu classes were held. Although consistent narratives did not exist in these processes, emotional connections were made through image connections. In the subject-oriented animation project, animation styles were determined centering on learning contents. Scroll styles were created for historical events, and animations in which candies were objects were created to express multiple cultures.
Secondly, trans-disciplinary learning experiences could be found in the process of animation storytelling, during which students played the roles of diverse experts to create movements and stories with images. Since this process covered not only the learning elements immanent in stories per se but also sensory elements in animations, the animation working classes included total sensory restructuring.
Third, students had democratic learning and communications in the process of animation creation as temporal cooperation. Animation creation essentially has the nature of cooperative work. This cooperation process was reflected on not only simple role division but also narrative making and image creation. Individual students’ image expressions were temporally reflected equally. In produced collaborative narratives extemporally and simultaneously through active communications.
Fourth, students could construct their own meanings through the process of storytelling in animation creation processes. Students made stories of communities through communications of popular culture and abstract images. In addition, animation works became stages of meeting in which individual voices communicated with others.
In this study, diverse learning experiences and meanings were composed through story-making processes in joint animation creation classes. The results of this study showed that animations are not only image expressions or texts for reading but also excellent educational sources providing live experiences in education. In fact, students could find significant knowledge and personal and communal values through animations. This was closely related to the unique nature of narratives of animation genres.
The diverse image-telling styles and natures of narratives of animations has contributed to the composition of human lives and communication from the past.
This has important meaning in the current and future digital environments in which images are magnified as important media.
Therefore, animation education studies are expected to contribute considerably to educational experiences related to our lives in the age of new media.
