다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

Based on the observation that most fictional characters bear names that reflect their natures given in the context of the work or meanings intended by the authors, this study focuses on the English translation of proper names in modern Korean short stories. The translation of proper names of literary works are particularly important because they are culture-specific, created on the basis of the specific setting in a given culture at a given time.
According to Hermans (1988), such fictional names implying something intended by the author are classified as ‘loaded names.’ Loaded names sometimes present readers with pleasure which readers can expect a particular characteristic or encounter irony arising from the discrepancy between the characters and their names.
The meaning contained in a loaded name can be easily traced by the source text readers because they have not only the same mother tongue as the language written in the stories, but also the shared culture and background knowledge as well. However, what if the loaded name is translated into the other language? It is expected that the other readers (that is, the translated text readers) may not grasp the meaning of the name as the original text readers do.
Given the translation practices of Korean literature into English so far, the transliteration strategy has been taken for granted as far as proper names are concerned. In terms of Sino-Korean proper names which facilitate meaningful implication in Korean literature, their intended meanings are considered to be necessarily explained in any way as translated into English.
In this regard, this study firstly examines whether most characters’ names and other proper names of Korean literature are transferred into English version without any loss of meaning through the comparative analysis of modern Korean short story text and their translated English counterpart in accordance with the ten (10) kinds of appellation. And then, through the analysis, any problems of translation are pointed out from the perspectives of translation strategy and translation (or translators’) ethics. Finally, a useful alternative that delivers the intended meanings to the target text readers is suggested by using the concept ‘paratext’ through this research.
With these three main objectives, this study selects more than 100 translated texts into English mainly from Korean modern short stories to classify proper names according to the 10 ways of nomenclature. The list of the nomenclature theory applied to this study is as follows: allegorical appellation, onomatopoeic appellation, allusive appellation, socially conventional appellation, appellation using alphabetical initials, appellation using nicknames, appellation using similar sounds, appellation using a form of address, non-appellation, and appellation using word play.
The translation strategies applied to the study in order to analyze the translation of proper names are reconstructed based on the theories of translation strategies as follows: from the translation strategies of foreignization and domestication suggested by Schleimacher and Venuti to culture-specific strategies of Newmark, Hermans, and Franco Aixela.
As a result of looking into the translation of proper names, it is found that the strategies of transliteration and literal translation are used most. This result also shows that such strategies do not perform properly to deliver the intended meaning of proper names to the target text readers. Only by transferring the name to sound the same with or recognizable for what it indicates, the intended meaning of the name is missing. Such a problem is discussed in terms of translation strategies and translation [or translators’] ethics.
In order to solve the problem that arises from the loss of meaning through the translation process, this study suggests an alternative that the paratext as a space of the translator should be fully used. In fact, there is little space for the translator effectively to narrow the gap between the source text author and the target text readers, even though the translator is thought to be a mediator between cultures in the academic world and the field. It is true that a single word such as a proper name which can possibly contain the irony of the entire story, or a form of address which can possibly show the relations between the characters, or a word-playable name which can possibly reveal the bearer’s characteristics cannot be mediated by the translator within the translated text.
Therefore, the paratext of the target text created by the translator can function to transfer the intended meaning of proper names to target readers, and consequently the translator can conform to the translators’ ethics while the target text readers can enjoy the equivalent pleasure through reading literature to that the source text readers feel.
Although the analyzed texts, the theories applied to, and the scope discussed and suggested in this study may be limited, this study is differentiated from the existing research with regard to attempting to suggest an alternative for preventing meaning loss of proper names through the translator’s aggressive intervention by creating the translator’s space, ‘paratext,’ to interpret the intended meaning of the name to the target text readers.
