    The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating effects of cognitive variables in the relationship between attachment and depression in university students. The present study especially selected cognitive variables, such as, hope, and social self-efficacy which are positive aspects of cognition, and negative automatic thoughts which is negative aspect of cognition.
    The research questions are in the followings. First, what is the relationship between attachment to father and mother in university students and depression? Second, what is the relationship between attachment to father and mother and hope, social self-efficacy, and negative automatic thoughts? Third, what are the relationship between hope, social self-efficacy and negative automatic thoughts and depression? Fourth, do hope, social self-efficacy, and negative automatic thought mediate completely or partially the relationship between attachment to father and mother and depression? and which is the relatively important variable among cognitive mediators between attachment to father and mother and depression?
    A survey of 528 university students in Seoul and Chungnam was carried out for this study. Among them, 20 students were excluded who showed extreme values, and 508 students were selected for the final analysis.
    The present study on the basis of previous theories and studies established the structural model of the relationships between attachment to father and mother, three cognitive variables, and depression. A research model hypothesized that the relationship between attachment to father and mother and depression would be completely mediated by three cognitive variables. An alternative model hypothesized that the relationship between attachment to father and mother and depression would be partially mediated by three cognitive variables. The procedure of structural equation modeling analysis was complemented by testing the measurement model and the structural model. The result by confirmatory factor analysis showed that the measurement model fitted the data. A comparison test between the research model and the alternative model showed that the research model relatively fitted the data more than the alternative model. However, in the research model, two paths(attachment to father → hope; attachment to father → social self-efficacy) were not statistically significant. So, the modified model that the two paths were deleted was tested. The result showed that the modified model fitted to the data. Therefore, the modified model was selected the final model.
    The results that were showed in the final model were in the followings. First, the total effects of attachment to father and mother on depression were significant. Second, university students with greater scores on the attachment to father showed higher scores on hope and social self-efficacy, and lower scores on negative automatic thoughts. Third, university students with greater scores on hope showed lower scores on depression. The university students with greater scores on automatic thoughts showed higher scores on depression. Fourth, the relationships between attachment to father and mother and depression was completely mediated by hope and negative automatic thoughts. Fifth, the most important mediator among the three cognitive variables which mediated the relationships between attachment to father and mother and depression was the negative automatic thoughts.
    The implications of the results in the present study for the counseling practice were in the followings. First, the result that cognitive variables completely mediated the relationships between attachment to father and mother and depression suggests that if depressed clients with non-secure attachment don't have long term counseling, they would have more benefits in the attempts to modify cognitive variables than change the attachment directly. Second, the result that negative automatic thinking is the most important mediator suggest that the focused counseling on negative automatic thoughts to decrease depression would have benefits.

    본 연구의 연구문제는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 대학생의 부, 그리고 모에 대한 애착과 우울 간의 관계는 어떠한가? 둘째, 애착과 희망, 사회적 자기 효능감, 부정적 자동사고의 관계는 어떠한가? 셋째, 희망, 사회적 자기 효능감, 부정적 자동사고와 우울의 관계는 어떠한가? 넷째, 애착과 우울의 관계는 희망, 사회적 자기 효능감, 부정적 자동사고에 의해 완전매개되는가? 또는 부분매개 되는가? 세 가지 매개변인 중에서 상대적으로 중요한 매개변인은 무엇인가?
    본 연구를 위해 서울과 충남 지역에 있는 4년제 대학생 528명에게 설문조사를 실시하였으며, 이 중 극단 값을 보인 20명을 제외하고 총 508명을 최종 분석에 사용하였다.
    또한, 본 연구의 목적을 달성하기 위해 선행연구를 검토하여 애착, 세 가지 인지변인과 우울 사이의 구조모형을 먼저 수립하였다. 그 결과 애착과 우울 사이의 관계를 세 가지 인지변인이 완전매개 한다는 연구모형과 부분매개 한다는 경쟁모형이 설정되었다. 두 가지 연구모형 중 어떤 모형이 자료에 더 적합한지를 알아보기 위하여 측정모형 검증과 구조모형 검증을 한 결과, 측정모형과 연구모형이 각각 자료에 적합한 것으로 밝혀졌다. 그러나 연구 결과에서 가설과는 다르게 연구모형에서의 두 개의 경로(부에 대한 애착이 희망으로 가는 경로, 부에 대한 애착이 사회적 자기 효능감을 매개하여 우울로 가는 경로)는 유의하지 않았다. 따라서 이 두 가지의 경로를 삭제한 수정모형을 검증하였고, 그 결과로 더 간명한 수정모형을 최종모형으로 선택하였다.
    최종 수정모형에서 나타난 연구의 주요한 결과들을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 부와 모에 대한 애착은 우울과 유의한 총효과를 보였다. 둘째, 대학생의 부와 모에 대한 애착이 높을수록 희망, 사회적 자기 효능감이 유의하게 높았고, 부정적 자동사고는 유의하게 낮았다. 셋째, 희망이 높을수록 우울이 유의하게 낮았고, 부정적 자동사고가 높을수록 우울이 유의하게 높았다. 넷째, 부와 모에 대한 애착과 우울의 관계는 희망, 부정적 자동사고에 의하여 완전매개 되었다. 다섯째, 부와 모에 대한 애착과 우울의 관계에서 부정적 자동사고가 희망, 사회적 자기 효능감보다 상대적으로 더 중요한 매개변인으로 나타났다.
    본 연구의 결과에 따른 상담에 대한 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 인지변인들이 완전매개 하였다는 결과에 따라 애착이 불안정하여 우울한 내담자가 단기상담을 해야 하는 경우에는 애착을 직접적으로 변화시켜 우울을 경감시키려는 시도를 하기보다는 인지변인을 매개로한 인지치료가 더 적합하다는 것을 시사한다. 둘째, 부정적 자동사고가 다른 매개변인보다 상대적으로 더 강한 효과를 갖는다는 본 연구의 결과에 따라, 부정적 자동사고의 처치에 우선적으로 중점을 두는 상담이 우울의 경감에 도움이 될 수 있음을 시사한다.
    마지막으로 본 연구의 요약과 함께 본 연구의 의의와 제한점, 제언등을 논의하였다.
