Acute (24 h) and chronic (90 days) oral toxicity studies on the ethanol extract of Trigonella foenum-graecum Leguminosae (L.) seeds were carried out. Acute dosages were 0.5, 1.0 and 3 g/kg while chronic dosage was 100 mg/kg per day of the extract. All morphological, biochemical, haematological and spermatogenic changes, in addition to mortality, body weight changes and any change in vital organs were recorded. Histopathological investigations were done on vital organs. Growth arrest in the treated animals was observed. The treated mice gained no significant weight during chronic treatment while there was a significant gain in body weight of the control group mice. Biochemical studies revealed a significant decrease in blood sugar levels of fenugreek treatment groups while haematological parameters remained comparable to the control. In the treatment,male group there was a significant decrease in weight of testes as compared to the control. There was a marginal weight gain in kidney weight of mice after chronic treatment as compared to the control. Fenugreek chronic treatment caused a highly significant spermatotoxic effects in male mice.

This study aims to analyze the effect of transformational leadership (TL), procedural justice (PJ), and training (T) on employee performance (EP) mediated by self-efficacy (SE). The object of this research is Rumah Sakit Umum Daerah (RSUD) M.Th. Djaman, a hospital in Sanggau Regency, while the subjects are the institution's staff. Data collection search uses purposive sampling with a total of 120 samples. Data are obtained through questionnaires distributed directly to respondents using the Google Form application. Data analysis techniques used in this study include standard error of mean (SEM) with AMOS software version 24.00. Methods use to test validity and reliability of data include Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA), Construct Reliability (CR) and VE. The results of the analysis show that only training has a significant effect on self-efficacy, and self-efficacy has a significant effect on employee performance. Also, self-efficacy is proven to mediate the role of training on employee performance; the other hypotheses are not significant. Training is the most prominent positive factor affecting self-efficacy and self-efficacy has a significant effect on employee performance at RSUD M.Th. Djaman. The results of this study can be used as a reference by management in determining what policy priorities should take precedence.

Background: Glycogen synthase (GS) is the rate-limiting enzyme controlling nonoxidative glucose disposal in skeletal muscle. Reduction in GS activity and impaired insulin responsiveness are characteristic features of skeletal muscle in type 2 diabetes that contribute to glucose intolerance. These properties also exist in human skeletal muscle cell cultures from type 2 diabetic subjects. The aim of study is to determine the effect of an isolated reduction in GS on glucose metabolism and if this change can generate a diabetes-like state. Methods: Cultured skeletal muscle cells from non-diabetic subjects were treated with antisense oligodeoxynucleotides (ODN) to GS to interfere with expression of the gene for b days. GS activity, protein expression, glycogen synthesis and cellular glycogen content were measured. Results: Treatment with antisense ODN reduced GS protein expression by 70% compared to control (scrambled) ODN (p$lt;0.01). Both total GS activity and that measured at 0.1 mM G-6-P were reduced by antisense ODN treatment. Insulin responsiveness of GS was also halved. Basal GS FV_(0.1), was decreased in both antisense ODN and control ODN treated cells and antisense treated cells did not show increase in GS FV0.1 in response to insulin stimulation. Glucose incorporation into glycogen under basal conditions was unaltered after antisense ODN treatment, though no further stimulation in response to insulin was observed. Yet both cellular glycogen content and glycogen synthesis were lower in antisense ODN treated cells compared to control ODN treated cells. Conclusions: Reduction in GS expression in human skeletal muscle cell impair GS activity and insulin responsiveness but does not replicate the abnormalities of glycogen synthesis found in cultured diabetic skeletal muscle cells.

저자들은 1996년 1월 1일부터 1996년 12월 31일까지 분만키 위해 내원한 산모 중 정상 분만 2,931예 중에 100예, 경막외마취를 시행한 252예 중에 각각 100예씩 무작위 추출하여 비교 관찰하여 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 1. 경막외마취 시행군에서 초산모가 58예, 경산모가 37예였고(제왕절개술 5예), 정상분만 100예 중에 초산모 가 26예, 경산모가 72예였으며(제왕절개술 2예) 평균 연 령은 연구군이 27.78세, 대조군은 27.27세였으며 산모의 평균 몸무게 및 신장은 연구군에서 66.69 kg, 160.08 cm 였고 대조군에서 65.72 kg, 160.69 cm였으며 산모의 직 업은 연구군에서 주부가 86명, 기타 직업을 가진 산모가 14명, 대조군에서 주부가 83명, 기타 직업을 가진 산모 가 17명이였으며 임신 주수는 시행군이 평균 40.07주, 대조군이 평균 39.78주로 산모의 연령, 몸무게 및 신장, 직업, 임신 주수는 두 군 사이에 유의한 차이점은 없었 다(P>0.05). 2. 분만 제1기의 기간은 초산모에서 연구군이 평균 273.4분, 대조군이 261.2분이었고 경산모에서 연구군이 평균 198.6분, 대조군이 175.7분으로 두 군 사이에 초산 모, 경산모 모두 유의한 차이점은 없었다(P>0.05). 3. 분만 제2기의 기간은 초산모에서 연구군이 63.8분, 대조군이 43.3분이었으며 경산모에서 연구군이 30.6분, 대조군이 11.2분으로 초산모, 경산모 모두 분만 제2기의 기간이 지연되는 경향을 보였다(P<0.05). 4. 출혈량은 연구군이 평균 390 cc, 대조군이 391 cc 로 두 군 사이에 유의한 차이점은 없었다(P>0.05). 5. 1분 Apgar 평점은 9∼10점이 연구군 85예, 대조군 98예였고, 5분 Apgar 평점은 9∼10점이 연구군 97예, 대 조군 99예로 두 군 사이에 유의한 차이는 없었다(P> 0.05). 6. Meconium staining이 없는 경우는 연구군에서 79예, 대조군에서 88예였고, mild한 경우가 각각 10예, 4예였 고, moderate한 경우가 각각 4예, 3예였으며, severe한 경 우가 각각 7예, 5예로 두 군 사이에 유의한 차이점은 없 었다(P>0.05). 7. 경막외마취를 원하는 이유로 통증 때문이 88예, 경 험에 의해서 원하는 경우가 3예, 주위 권유가 9예로 통 증 때문이 제일 많았다. 8. 경막외마취의 효과로는 아주 좋았다는 36예, 좋다 는 56예 그저 그렇다는 8예였으며 VAS(Visual Analogue Scale) 통증 점수는 3.78±4.87(Mean±SD)이었다. Authors have analyzed the clinical significance of epidural anesthesia applied on labor progress on 100 cases of normal delivery groups given epidural anesthesia from January 1, 1996 to December 31, 1996 at obstetrical service in Masan Fatima Hospital. The results of these studies were as followings. 1. There was no significant difference in mean age, body weight, height, occupation and gestational age between epidural anesthesia group and control group (P>0.05). 2. The effect of epidural anesthesia on the first stage of labor revealed no significant difference in both group (P>0.05). 3. Prolongation of second stage of labor was noticed in nullipara and multipara of epidural anesthetic group compared to control group (P<0.05). 4. The mean blood loss of epidural anesthetic group was 390cc and control group was 391cc. There was no significant difference in blood loss (P>0.05). 5. There was no significant difference in 1 minute and 5 minutes Apgar score between study and control group (P>0.05). 6. The reasons for selecting epidural anesthesia were pain (88 case), experience (3 case), adivise (9 case). 7. The efficacy of pain control by epidural anesthesia was excellent (36%), good (56%), poor (8%). Mean VAS (Visual Analogue Scale) score was 3.78 (±4.87, Standard Deviation).
Influence of wavelength-shifting films on multianode PMTs with UV-extended windows

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Wavelength-shifting (WLS) films were applied on UV-extended front windows of multianode photomultiplier tubes (MAPMTs) in order to increase the sensitivity of the MAPMTs at shorter wavelengths. The WLS material contained p-Terphenyl as photoactive component, which absorbs shorter wavelength photons ( < 300 nm ) and re-emits fluorescence photons around 350nm, i.e., at the maximum of the PMTs׳ sensitivity. The films were applied by means of dip-coating and the film performance was studied with respect to quantum efficiency, film homogeneity, and crosstalk on the MAPMTs. Using WLS-film-covered MAPMTs in a gaseous Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector, the number of detected photoelectrons per ring increased by up to 21% in an in-beam test.</P>
