Aphids are among the most destructive phytophagous pests of host plants, because of their rapid reproduction, parthenogenesis, extensive crop damage, and the transmission of many plant viruses. Since lady beetles are important predatory natural enemies of aphids, developing lady beetle attractants to increase their field abundance is vital for aphid control. Floral volatiles and other semiochemicals are reportedly attractive to lady beetles. In this research, a total of 58 floral volatiles were tested by Y-tube olfactometer assays, among which 29 were highly attractive to both Harmonia axyridis (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) and Coccinella septempunctata (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae). Meanwhile, the results of wind tunnel trials showed that only isoamyl acetate, α-humulene, trans-3-hexen-1-ol, methyl salicylate, and β-pinene lure these two species. Thereafter, 15 semiochemicals from pests, natural enemies, and pest-infested crops were mixed with the selected floral volatiles, to determine optimum formulations for attracting lady beetles through wind tunnels and further field trials. Eventually, formulas (1) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate: trans-3-hexen-1-ol = 1:3:3:10; (5) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate:1-nonanal = 1:3:3:10; (8) α-humulene: β-pinene: methyl salicylate: indole = 1:3:3:10 (1, 5, and 8 are labels used for the various formulations in field trials) were successfully verified to be attractive to lady beetles in both pumpkin and wheat fields. These formulations will be of great significance in developing integrated pest management strategies for aphid control.
Effects of Increased Iodine Intake on Thyroid Disorders
Xin Sun,Zhongyan Shan,Weiping Teng 대한내분비학회 2014 Endocrinology and metabolism Vol.29 No.3
Iodine is a micronutrient essential for the production of thyroid hormones. Iodine deficiency is the most common cause of preventable mental impairment worldwide. Universal salt iodization (USI) has been introduced in many countries as a cost-effective and sustainable way to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders for more than 25 years. Currently, the relationship between USI and iodine excess has attracted more attention. Iodine excess can lead to hypothyroidism and autoimmune thyroiditis, especially for susceptible populations with recurring thyroid disease, the elderly, fetuses, and neonates. Nationwide USI was introduced in China in 1996. This review focused on the effects of iodine excess worldwide and particularly in China.
Finite volume element methods for nonlinear parabolic problems
LI, QIAN,LIU, ZHONGYAN 한국산업정보응용수학회 2002 한국산업정보응용수학회 Vol.6 No.2
In this paper, finite volume element methods for nonlinear parabolic problems are proposed and analyzed. Optimal order error estimates in W^(1,p) and L_(p) are derived for 2≤p≤∞. In addition, superconvergence for the error between the approximation solution and the generalized elliptic projection of the exact solution (or and the finite element solution) is also obtained.

Li Lu,Beibei Wang,Zhongyan Shan,Fengwei Jiang,Xiaochun Teng,Yanyan Chen,Yaxin Lai,Jiani Wang,Haibo Xue,Sen Wang,Chenyan Li,He Liu,Ningna Li,Jiashu Yu,Liangfeng Shi,Xin Hou,Qian Xing,Xue Bai,Weiping Te 대한의학회 2011 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.26 No.2
This study investigated the relationship between serum thyrotrophin levels and dyslipidemia in subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid subjects. A total of 110 subjects with subclinical hypothyroidism and 1,240 euthyroid subjects enrolled in this study. Patients with subclinical hypothyroidism had significantly lower high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels than those who were euthyroid. The lipid profiles were each categorized and mean thyrotrophin levels were higher in subjects in the dyslipidemia subclasses than subjects in the normal subclasses. Thyrotrophin was positively associated with serum triglyceride and negatively associated with serum HDL-C in women. Thyrotrophin was also positively associated with total cholesterol (TC) in the overweight population along with TC and LDL-C in overweight women. In the euthyroid population, thyrotrophin was positively associated with TC in the overweight population. In conclusion, serum thyrotrophin was correlated with dyslipidemia in subclinical hypothyroid and euthyroid subjects; the correlation was independent of insulin sensitivity.

Catabolite control protein A (CcpA) is the major transcriptional regulator in carbon catabolite repression in several Gram-positive bacteria. We attempted to characterize the role of a CcpA homologue of Streptococcus suis type 2 in sugar metabolism and virulence. Addition of glucose or sucrose to the defined medium significantly reduced the activity of raffinose-inducible α-galactosidase, cellobiose-inducible β-glucosidase, and maltose-inducible α-glucosidase of the wildtype strain by about 9, 4, and 2-3 fold, respectively. Deletion of ccpA substantially derepressed the effects of repressing sugars on α-galactosidase or β-glucosidase activity. The ccpA deletion mutant showed reduced expression of virulence genes sly and eno (P<0.05), decreased adhesion to and invasion into endothelial cells (P<0.05), and attenuated virulence to mice with significant reduction of death rate and bacterial burden in organs, as compared to the wild-type strain. Both the in vitro and in vivo defect phenotypes were reversible by ccpA complementation. Thus, this study shows that CcpA of S. suis type 2 plays an important role in carbon catabolite repression and virulence.
CircKLHL2 mitigates septic lung injury via circKLHL2-miR-338-3p-ATF6 ceRNA pathway

Background Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are newly identified therapeutic targets for sepsis. CircRNA mmu_circ_0001679 dysregulation is underlying the pathogenesis and treatment of sepsis-induced acute lung injury (ALI). Here, the expression and role of its human homologoue circRNA-Kelch-like family member 2 (circKLHL2; hsa_circ_0071374) were explored in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced human ALI. Objective Expression levels of circKLHL2, microRNA (miR)-338-3p and activating transcription factor 6 (ATF6) were detected by quantitative PCR and western blotting, and dual-luciferase reporter assay confirmed target relationships among them. Cell injury was measured using cell-counting kit-8, reactive oxygen species (ROS)/malondialdehyde (MDA)/superoxide dismutase (SOD) assays, Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate apoptosis assay, western blotting and cysteine-requiring aspartate proteases (caspases) activity assays. Result The expression of circKLHL2 and ATF6 was upregulated in sepsis-damaged human lung tissues and LPS-stressed human bronchial epithelial cells (16HBE), with a concomitant decrease of miR-338-3p. RNA interfering of circKLHL2 improved cell viability of LPS-challenged 16HBE cells, and suppressed apoptosis, oxidative stress and endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress, as evidenced by the increased bcl-2 level and SOD activity, and the decreased apoptosis rate, caspase3/9 activity and levels of bcl-2-associated X protein, ROS, MDA, ATF6 and C/EBP-homologous protein. Moreover, circKLHL2 knockdown exerted similar results to ER stress inhibitor 4-phenyl butyric acid in LPS injury. In addition, circKLHL2 knockdown reversed LPS-induced mitochondrial dysfunction. ATF6 and circKLHL2 were competing endogenous RNAs of miR-338-3p, and either exhausting miR-338-3p or restoring ATF6 could counteract circKLHL2 knockdown-mediated roles in LPS injuries. Conclusion Depleting circKLHL2 suppressed LPS-induced ALI through suppressing mitochondrial dysfunction and cytotoxicity and oxidative and ER stresses-induced apoptosis via circKLHL2-miR-338-3p/ATF6 axis.

Cowpea mild mottle virus (CPMMV) is a global plant virus that poses a threat to the production and quality of legume crops. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential for effective managing CPMMV outbreaks. With the advancement in isothermal recombinase polymerase amplification and lateral flow strips technologies, more rapid and sensitive methods have become available for detecting this pathogen. In this study, we have developed a reverse transcription recombinase polymerase amplification combined with lateral flow strips (RT-RPA-LFS) method for the detection of CPMMV, specifically targeting the CPMMV coat protein (CP) gene. The RT-RPA-LFS assay only requires 20 min at 40°C and demonstrates high specificity. Its detection limit was 10 copies/μl, which is approximately up to 100 times more sensitive than RT-PCR on agarose gel electrophoresis. The developed RT-RPA-LFS method offers a rapid, convenient, and sensitive approach for field detection of CPMMV, which contribute to controlling the spread of the virus.
