Characteristics of Pulse Gas Flow during the Pulse-jet Cleaning of a Ceramic Filter Candle

The existence of the under-pressure accompanied by the oscillation of the pulse gas around the pulse nozzleis an interesting point as it improves the jet pulse effect by the entrainment of environmental clean gas whileits prolong forms a dead zone near just input position into the filter element. This phenomenon has been studiedby a few workers. Moreover, its mechanism or the origin has not been clearly unveiled so far. In order toapproach the real system to investigate the dynamic pulse flow gas, the experimental investigation of the transientpressure distribution of pulse gas around the pulse nozzle was carried out using commercial filter candle inthis study. Differential pressure around the pulse nozzle was carefully measured during the injection of the pulsegas and the peak of the differential pressure was traced to visualize the pulse gas flow. The formation of negativepressure during the pulse gas injection was observed around the pulse nozzle. And the pulse propagation ofthe oscillation wave was observed during the expansion of the pulse gas after leaving the pulse nozzle andits phenomena observed in the experimental results showing qualitatively good agreement with the simulationresults.
Flexural Behavior of Circular Hollow RC Piers with Reduced Amounts of Inner Hoops

Reversed cyclic loading tests of two circular hollow RC piers were conducted in this study to investigate the effect of different amounts of inner and outer circular hoops on their flexural behavior. The test results showed that the column with a smaller amount of inner circular hoops presented better flexural response than the as-built column with an equal amount of inner and outer circular hoops. Also, the demand developed on the inner circular hoops was smaller than the outer one within the plastic hinge regions, which verified that using a smaller amount of inner circular hoops was reasonable and effective. By examining the confining stress experienced by the concrete in the radial and circumferential directions based on a detailed theoretical analysis, a modeling approach was proposed to take the confinement effect in circular hollow RC piers into consideration. The proposed modeling approach was validated through comparisons with the experimental study and satisfactory agreement was found.
C1420T Polymorphism of Cytosolic Serine Hydroxymethyltransferase and Risk of Cancer: a Meta-analysis

A series of studies have explored the role of cytosolic serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT1) C1420T polymorphism in cancer risk, but their results were conflicting rather than conclusive. To derive a more precise estimation of the association between C1420T and cancer risk, the present meta-analysis of 28 available studies with 15,121 cases and 18,023 controls was conducted. The results revealed that there was no significant association between the polymorphism and cancer risk overall. In stratified analysis by cancer type (breast cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, leukemia, lymphoma, and others), the results showed that 1420T allele was associated with decreased risk in leukemia (CT vs. CC: OR= 0.825, 95% CI =0.704-0.966; and CT+TT vs. CC: OR= 0.838, 95% CI = 0.722-0.973), but the same results were not present for other cancer types. When subgroup analysis was performed by source of control (population-based [PB] and hospital-based [HB]), a borderline inverse association was observed for the HB subgroup (CT vs. CC: OR= 0.917, 95% CI = 0.857-0.982) but not for the PB subgroup. Stratifying by geographic area (America, Asia and Europe), significant inverse association was only found in Asia subgroup (CT vs. CC: OR= 0.674, 95% CI = 0.522-0.870). In summary, the findings suggest that SHMT1 C1420T polymorphism is not associated with overall cancer development, but might decrease cancer susceptibility of Asians as well as reduce leukemia risk. Large well-designed epidemiological studies will be necessary to validate the risk identified in the current meta-analysis.
Clinical and Prognostic Significance of SOX11 in Breast Cancer

Recently, the transcription factor SOX11 has gained extensive attention as a diagnostic marker in a series of cancers. However, to date, the possible roles of SOX11 in breast cancer has not been investigated. In this study, immunohistochemical staining for SOX11 was performed for 116 cases of breast cancer. Nuclear SOX11 was observed in 42 (36.2%) and cytoplasmic SOX11 in 52 (44.8%) of breast cancer samples. Moreover, high expression of cytoplasmic and nuclear SOX11 was associated with clinicopathological factors, including earlier tumor grade, absence of lymph node metastasis and smaller tumor size. Kaplan-Meier survival curves demonstrated high nuclear SOX11 expression to be associated with more prolonged overall survival than those with low expression and it could be an independent predictor of survival for breast cancer patients. It is worthwhile to note that cytoplasmic SOX11 was not correlated with prognosis of breast cancer patients. These data suggest the possibility that nuclear SOX11 could be as a potential target for breast cancer therapy.

Metaplastic breast cancer (MBC) is a rare type of breast carcinoma, characterized by various combinations of mesenchymal, adenocarcinoma and other epithelial components. MBC often manifests as a large mass, with low axillary lymph node involvement and poor prognosis. Knowledge and treatment patterns about MBC demographics, presentation and tumor characteristics are very limited. In clinical practice, MBC is usually treated based on the guidelines developed for infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC). The ideal treatment paradigm for MBC is unknown due to its low incidence and pathological variability, so potential predictors of treatment efficacy need to be explored. This review summarizes the current models and strategies for MBC according to the published literature.
Down-regulation of miRNA-452 is Associated with Adriamycin-resistance in Breast Cancer Cells

Adriamycin (ADR) is an important chemotherapeutic agent frequently used in treatment of breast cancer. However, resistance to ADR results in treatment failure in many patients. Recent studies have indicated that microRNAs (miRNAs) may play an important role in such drug-resistance. In the present study, microRNA-452 (miR-452) was found to be significantly down-regulated in adriamycin-resistant MCF-7 cells (MCF-7/ADR) compared with the parental MCF-7 cells by miRNA microarray and real-time quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). MiR-452 mimics and inhibitors partially changed the adriamycin-resistance of breast cancer cells, as also confirmed by apoptosis assay. In exploring the potential mechanisms of miR-452 in the adriamycin-resistance of breast cancer cells, bioinformatics analysis, RT-qPCR and Western blotting showed that dysregulation of miR-452 played an important role in the acquired adriamycin-resistance of breast cancer, maybe at least in part via targeting insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R).

The complexity of macro-fiber composite (MFC) materials increasing the difficulty in simulation and analysis of MFC integrated structures. To give an accurate prediction of MFC bonded smart structures for the simulation of shape and vibration control, the paper develops a linear electro-mechanically coupled static and dynamic finite element (FE) models based on the first-order shear deformation (FOSD) hypothesis. Two different types of MFCs are modeled and analyzed, namely MFC-d31 and MFC-d33, in which the former one is dominated by the d31 effect, while the latter one by the d33 effect. The present model is first applied to an MFC-d33 bonded composite plate, and then is used to analyze both active shape and vibration control for MFC-d31/-d33 bonded plate with various piezoelectric fiber orientations.
Current-voltage Characteristics of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 Superconductors

The vortex phase diagrams of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 and NdFeAsO0.85 superconductors are determined from an analysis of resistivity and current-voltage (I-V ) measurements in magnetic fields up to 9 T. A vortex glass to liquid transition can be identified only in the oxygen-deficient NdFeAsO0.85, for which the I-V curves can be well scaled onto liquid and glass branches consistent with the vortex glass theory. With increasing magnetic field, the activation energy, U0, deduced from the Arrhenius plots of the resistivity based on the thermally-activated flux-flow model decays more quickly for NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 than for NdFeAsO0.85. Moreover, the irreversibility field, Hirr, of NdFeAsO0.85 increases more rapidly than that of NdFeAsO0.85F0.15 with decreasing temperature. These observations imply strong vortex pinning effects in the oxygen-deficient NdFeAsO0.85, presumably caused by enhanced defects and disorders. We infer that the observation of a vortex glass to liquid transition in NdFeAsO0.85 may be also related to the enhanced defects and disorder in the specimen.

<P>We measured the initial <I>M</I>–<I>H</I> curves for a sample of the newly discovered superconductor NdFeAsO<SUB>0.82</SUB>Fe<SUB>0.18</SUB>, which had a critical temperature, <I>T</I><SUB>c</SUB>, of 51 K and was fabricated at the high pressure of 6 GPa. The lower critical field, <I>H</I><SUB>c1</SUB>, was extracted from the deviation point of the Meissner linearity in the <I>M</I>–<I>H</I> curves, which show linear temperature dependence in the low temperature region down to 5 K. The <I>H</I><SUB>c1</SUB>(<I>T</I>) indicates no s-wave superconductivity, but rather an unconventional superconductivity with a nodal gap structure. Furthermore, the linearity of <I>H</I><SUB>c1</SUB> at low temperature does not hold at high temperature, but shows other characteristics, indicating that this superconductor might have multi-gap features. Based on the low temperature nodal gap structure, we estimate that the maximum gap magnitude Δ<SUB>0</SUB> = (1.6 ± 0.2) <I>k</I><SUB>B</SUB><I>T</I><SUB>c</SUB>.</P>
FOXA1: a Promising Prognostic Marker in Breast Cancer

Accurate diagnosis and proper monitoring of cancer patients remain important obstacles for successful cancer treatment. The search for cancer biomarkers can aid in more accurate prediction of clinical outcome and may also reveal novel predictive factors and therapeutic targets. One such prognostic marker seems to be FOXA1. Many studies have shown that FOXA1 is strongly expressed in a vast majority of cancers, including breast cancer, in which high expression is associated with a good prognosis. In this review, we summarize the role of this transcription factor in the development and prognosis of breast cancer in the hope of providing insights into utility of FOXA1 as a novel biomarker.
