The Literary Embodiment of “Womanism” in Alice Walker’s Novels

Vol.26 No.3

Alice Walker is a prominent contemporary African-American novelist who coined “womanist” to inspire black women to strive to achieve their liberty and identities against the sexual and racial oppression upon themselves. This paper aims to analyze and explore Walker’s three representative novels to understand black women’s resistance against the double domination and their journey towards self-independence, through which the spirit of “womanism” is vividly embodied. As regards to the double oppression of black women, Walker advocates building up “women’s league,” which ushers in their path of liberation. In the league, women and men compose together the hymn of the harmonious co-existence with love and understanding.

A reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay to rapidly diagnose foot-and-mouth disease virus C

        Yao-zhong Ding,Jian-hua Zhou,Li-na Ma,Yan-ni Qi,Gang Wei,Jie Zhang,Yong-guang Zhang 대한수의학회 2014 JOURNAL OF VETERINARY SCIENCE Vol.15 No.3

A reverse transcription loop-mediated isothermalamplification (RT-LAMP) assay was developed to rapidlydetect foot-and-mouth disease virus serotype C (FMDV C). By testing 10-fold serial dilutions of FMDV C samples, sensitivity of the FMDV C RT-LAMP was found to be 10times higher than that of conventional reverse transcription-PCR (RT-PCR). No cross-reactivity with A, Asia 1, or OFMDV or swine vesicular disease virus (SVDV) indicatedthat FMDV C RT-LAMP may be an exciting novel method for detecting FMDV C.

      • Conflict, Peace and Ethical Solutions: A Confucian Perspective on War

2004 Sungkyun Journal of East Asian Studies Vol.4 No.2

The Confucian perspective on war is based on the universality of the Way, believing that a war that violates the Way is unjust, while an army that is to fulfil the Way will win victory without causing violence. However this paper argues that Confucianism should not be defined as a just war theory, because it has a fundamental inclination towards ethical pacifism, namely, taking moral influence rather than war as the solution of disorder and conflict. Can the Confucian way be transformed so that it will be conducive to the peace and harmony of the world in the twentieth century? Having examined the significance and implications of the early Confucian masters` discussion of conflict, peace and ethical solutions, this paper reaches a positive answer to the question that these remarks are of value for us to seek a way out of conflict and war the world is faced with today.

Vol.45 No.3

Environment of ancient Chinese Buddhist temple can be classified to three types such as regional society(鄕村), famous mountain(名山), and urban areas(都市). This made differences in environment where a temple existed and in turn, affected development of Buddhism. And this made another type in relationship between Buddhist temple and a society. This study explains influences which regional society gave on not only Buddhist temple and a monk but also existence and development of Buddhism. When temples are placed in different environmental position, that is, urban areas and regional society, among a social structure, they eventually should adapt to a different society externally and internally. As told in above, ancient Chinese Buddhist temple was located in regional society, famous mountain, and urban areas. Since Eastern Jin and Sixteen Kingdoms, as number of temple much increased, and temples and monks were concentrated on famous mountain, temples in famous mountains and urban areas had developed showing similar aspects each other. But because temples in regional society were influenced a little differently, this study focused on the point. There are four kinds of influences between temples and monks in regional areas. Monks in regional areas had a comparatively close relationship with a society because they came from same area or surrounding areas. Therefore, powers of regional areas restrict influences made by monk group in temple. Second, temples in regional areas shared their joys and sorrows depending on regional economy. Temples in regional areas became a public place for the society and often a market place. In fact, construction and existence of a temple originally became a driving force in regional economy. This is because construction of temple needs artisans and materials and some temples had visitors and included market economy like consumption of incense and candles, though the economic size was large or small. And when regional areas experienced natural disaster or man-made disaster or had poor harvest or economy was in depression, monks left temples and then, temples themselves could not exist. Third, the relationship between temples in regional areas and Buddhists was distinguished from the temples in urban areas and famous mountains. This is because temples in China were places where monks practiced and at the same time, places where general Buddhists worshipped. So there were always a number of Buddhists around the temples. Forth, Buddhism in resional areas was connected to regional Folk beliefs. As a result, Buddhism was spread across the nation, worship with local color often was changed to Buddhist belief or was tinged with Buddhism. While temples in regional areas maintained a close relationship with regional society.they were influenced by the region or gave influences. As a representative example, temples in regional areas showed model behaviors instead of roles of facilities related to various cultures with comparatively advanced level - for example, school, hospital etc. The temples highly affected funerary rites in regional areas. Chinese tombs were mainlymade in regional areas. After death, people living in urban areas were buried in hometown or at least, they were buried in suburbs not urban areas. Temples in regional areas generally participated in funerary rites. Above shows that though most of famous Buddhist temples were located in urban areas not in famous mountains, majority of temples were located in vast regional areas. Through mutual interaction between temples and regional society, the temples in the regional areas were related to Chinese people of over 90% and regional areas became the most important foundation for Buddhism in China. Mutual influences between temples in regional areas and the general public in regions were omnidirectional and spreaded to every aspects of social life in small or large degree. Thus Tombs in temple were widely spreaded across regional areas over time and space. This is enough to explain a close relationship between Buddhist temples and rural society in ancient China.

Effects of Supplementing with Single or Multiple Trace Minerals on Growth Performance, Fecal Mineral Excretion and Nutrient Utilization in Pullets from 1 to 18 Weeks of Age

        Zhong, L.L.,Yao, J.H.,Cheng, N.,Sun, Y.J.,Liu, Y.R.,Wang, Y.J.,Sun, X.Q.,Xi, H.B. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2007 Animal Bioscience Vol.20 No.6

This study investigated whether supplemental Cu, Fe, Zn, and Mn are needed in a practical diet for pullets. Four hundred and twenty females of an egg-laying strain (1-d-old, Lohmann Brown Layer) were randomly distributed into 4 groups, consisting of 7 replicates of 15 birds each. During the 18-week experimental period, chicks were given three basal diets in sequence, each with single or multiple Mn, Zn and Cu supplementation to improve the mineral balance gradually. In the Control, no Mn, Zn, and Cu were added; in the single Mn supplemented group (sMn) Mn was added to 120, 60, and 60 mg/kg for 1-6, 7-12, and 13-18 weeks of age, respectively; in the multiple Mn and Zn supplemented group (mMnZn), Mn was added to 180, 90, and 90 mg/kg and Zn was added to 120, 105, and 105 mg/kg for 1-6, 7-12, and 13-18 weeks of age, respectively; in the multiple Mn, Zn, Cu supplemented group (mMnZnCu), Mn, Zn, and Cu were added to the same multiple of basal Fe concentration relative to NRC (1994) recommendations. Energy and protein metabolizability were determined by subtracting energy/protein intake by energy/protein excretion (from both feces and urine) and dividing by energy/protein intake. There were no statistically significant differences between groups in terms of feed intake, final body weight or tibia length throughout the experiment. Optimal growth performance was observed in the Control, while adding trace minerals to basal diets tended to result in decreased productive performance. Protein metabolizability was increased by mMnZn and mMnZnCu treatments, but energy metabolizability was not affected. Concentrations of Mn, Zn, Cu in excreta varied greatly related to dietary content, and the retentions of Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn were all increased due to the improvement of mineral balance. Based on these results, it is suggested that the concentrations of Cu, Fe, Zn and Mn in typical basal diets used in this study were adequate for normal growth for pullets from 1 to 18 weeks of age.

Optical Properties of Zinc-oxide Films Determined Using Spectroscopic Ellipsometry with Various Dispersion Models

        Zhong-Hong Dai,Jie Shao,Yi-Ming Chen,Yu-Xiang Zheng,Jia-Da Wu,Liang-Yao Chen,Rong-Jun Zhang 한국물리학회 2009 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.55 No.3

In this work, we have studied the optical properties of wurtizite zinc-oxide films grown on silicon (100) substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Spectroscopic ellipsometry and three dispersion models, namely, the Sellmeier, Cauchy, and Forouhi-Bloomer models, were applied for determining the optical constants of the ZnO thin films. A comparison was made between two samples that were deposited for 30 minutes (sample I) and 60 minutes (sample II), respectively. X-ray diffraction analysis indicates that there are two types of preferred-orientation, i.e., (101) and (100) orientations for sample I and II, respectively. Results show that the Cauchy model gives the best fit for the samples with least root mean square error (RMSE) whereas the Forouhi-Bloomer model is most suitable for the data analysis in both the transparent and the absorption regions. The optical properties extracted from different dispersion models have been compared with the data reported in the literature. The results given in this work show that different dispersion models should be applied to obtain the optical constants In this work, we have studied the optical properties of wurtizite zinc-oxide films grown on silicon (100) substrates by means of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). Study on Anharmonic Effect of the Unimolecular Reaction of CH2(D2)FO

        Zhong, Jingjun,Li, Qian,Luo, Ji,Xia, Wenwen,Yao, Li,Lin, S.H. Korean Chemical Society 2014 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.35 No.12

Study on the unimolecular reaction for $CH_2FO$ and $CD_2FO$ is carried out. The structures, energy barriers and zero point energy of the three channels in the title unimolecular reactions are computed with the MP2/6-311++G(3df, 3pd) method. RRKM theory is used to calculate the rate constants of canonical case at temperature range of 500-5000 K and microcanonical system at total energy of 19.05-71.68 kcal/mol. The results indicate that the anharmonic effect and isotope effect are very small for the three channels, and the anharmonic rate constants, around $10^9-10^{11}s^{-1}$, are close to the experimental prediction reasonably.
