Face Management in Literary Translation : Chinese translations of Sense and Sensibility

Yuan, Xiaohui 이화여자대학교 통역번역연구소 2013 T&I review Vol.3 No.-

Face constitutes an important interpersonal component via which people manage rapport with each other dependent on their interactional goals. Face behaviour throughout the course of an interaction can indicate or manifest an interlocutor’s personality, attitude and intentions. The paper focuses on investigating how face is depicted in Sense and Sensibility where interpersonal dynamics feature and lead the plot, and how face is represented in the Chinese translation by Cheng Wei’an. Using three excerpts and their translation as data, it is found that interpersonal face markers are sometimes omitted or toned down in the translation, and bald-on-record face strategies changed into offrecord manners or redressed with concerns of hearers’ negative or positive face wants. This, I claim, may impact on a reader’s interpretation of interlocutors’ personality, attitude and intentions. The change of face features in literary translation, however, cannot fail to communicate a different idea of the personality of the characters in the literary work and of their attitudes towards each other. Therefore, this suggests that there is more work to do in literary translation from the perspective of face portrayal in order to assist readers from target cultures to better appreciate individual characters in the way that writers endeavour to portray and present to their readers. The difference may be due to the translator having adopted cultural filters to achieve naturalness in translating prefabricated orality, avoiding translationese. I further suggest that reader response tests could be carried out to provide evidence of translation impact on reader’s interpretation.

      • Reconceptualising Interpreter’s Role : A perspective from social identity theories

Xiaohui Yuan 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 2022 한국외국어대학교 통번역연구소 학술대회 Vol.2022 No.01

The interpreter’s role and performance in interpreting-facilitated interactions have attracted considerable scholarly attention since the 1970s. Seminal field research on interpreting in courtrooms, in hospitals, and in war zones describe interpreters as active participants. Nevertheless, Hale (2006) and Pöchhacker (2006) critique that much data-driven research in the area suffers from a lack of theoretical conceptualisations, and is short of diversified sociocultural and linguistic contexts for investigation. To strengthen the theoretical background to research on interpreters’ role, this study draws on social psychology theories of social identity and optimal distinctiveness, and the sociolinguistic notion of face, to develop an interdisciplinary framework for conceptualising how identity claims may influence interpreters’ choice of linguistic strategies in delivery. The English-Mandarin political press conference interpreting context is examined to illustrate how the proposed framework may shed light on our understanding of interpreters’ behaviour in action.

Distributed smoothed rank regression with heterogeneous errors for massive data

Yuan Xiaohui,Zhang Xinran,Wang Yue,Wang Chunjie 한국통계학회 2023 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.52 No.4

Rank estimation methods are robust and highly efficient for estimating linear regression model. This paper investigates the rank regression estimation for massive data. To deal with the situation that the data are distributed heterogeneously in different blocks, we propose a weighted distributed rank-based estimator for massive data, which can improve the efficiency of the standard divide and conquer estimator. Under mild conditions, the asymptotic distributions of the weighted distributed rank-based estimator is derived. To achieve sparsity with high-dimensional covariates, the variable selection procedure is also proposed. Both simulations and data analysis are included to illustrate the finite sample performance of the proposed methods.

Variable selection for single-index models based on martingale difference divergence

Yuan Xiaohui,Wang Yue,Wang Yiming,Liu Tianqing 한국통계학회 2024 Journal of the Korean Statistical Society Vol.53 No.1

In this paper, we consider variable selection for single-index models via martin- gale difference divergence. The important covariates are selected by maximizing penalized martingale difference divergence objective functions with fixed tuning parameters. To choose tuning parameters, we propose to use a BIC criterion. The consistency of the variable selection procedure with LASSO, SCAD and ALASSO penalties and asymptotic properties of the resulting estimators are established. The performance of the proposed procedure is assessed through extensive simulation studies. Finally, we apply the proposed method to real data sets.

Analysis of the DNA Methylation of Maize (Zea mays L.) in Response to Cold Stress Based on Methylation-sensitive Amplified Polymorphisms

        Xiaohui Shan,Xiaoyu Wang,Guang Yang,Ying-Wu Lan,Shengzhong Su,Shipeng Li,Hongkui Liu,Yaping Yuan 한국식물학회 2013 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.56 No.1

DNA methylation plays a vital role in tuning geneexpression in response to environmental stimuli. Here,methylation-sensitive amplified polymorphisms (MSAP)were used to assess the effect of cold stress on the extent andpatterns of DNA methylation in maize seedlings. Overall,cold-induced genome-wide DNA methylation polymorphismsaccounted for 32.6 to 34.8% of the total bands at the differenttreatment time-points. It was demonstrated that the extentand pattern of DNA methylation was induced by cold stressthrough the cold treatment process and that thedemethylation of fully methylated fragments was the maincontributor of the DNA methylation alterations. The sequencesof 28 differentially amplified fragments relevant to stresswere successfully obtained. Under the cold stress, demethylationwas detected in most fragments. BLAST results indicate thatthe homologues of these fragments are involved in manyprocesses, including hormone regulation, cold response, photosynthesis, and transposon activation. The expressionanalysis demonstrated an increase in the transcription of fivedemethylated genes. Despite the fact that DNA methylationchanges and cold acclimation are not directly associated, ourresults may indicate that the specific demethylation of genesis an active and rapid epigenetic response to cold in maizeduring the seedling stage, further elucidating the mechanismof maize adaptation to cold stress.

Separation and Characterization of Organic Chlorides in a Chinese Crude Oil

        Xiaohui Li,Rui Ma,Liang Ding,Huiying Yuan,Bencheng Wu,Jianhua Zhu 대한화학회 2018 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.39 No.4

A crude oil from Shengli oilfield of China was extracted with N,N‐dimethylformamide (DMF) for separation and enrichment of organic chlorides. The resulting extract with relatively higher chlorine concentration was analyzed with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Among the identified heteroatom compounds in the extract sample, nitrogen‐containing compounds were most abundant in the extract sample, followed by chlorine‐, sulfur‐, and oxygen‐containing compounds, respectively. Four organochlorines with an aromatic core structure, i.e., 5‐chloro‐2‐methylaniline, 2‐chloro‐6‐methylaniline, 4‐chloro‐2‐nitrotoluene, and 1‐(5‐chloro‐2‐hydroxyphenyl)ethanone, were identified from crude oil extract. The dominant abundant organic chloride is 5‐chloro‐2‐methylaniline with relative content of 65.1% in the total of identified organic chlorides, followed by 1‐(5‐chloro‐2‐hydroxyphenyl)ethanone of 16.3%, 2‐chloro‐6‐methylaniline of 14.5%, and 4‐chloro‐2‐nitrotoluene of 4.1%, respectively.

Interface damage mechanism of rubber cord composite material

        Xiaohui Guo,Xiaojing Yuan,Guangyong Liu,Hefang Qiu,Fanfan Cui 한양대학교 청정에너지연구소 2023 Journal of Ceramic Processing Research Vol.24 No.1

In order to study the interface failure mechanism of rubber cord composites laid at symmetrical angles, a representativevolume element was established by the finite element method to simulate the stress distribution at the mesoscopic level ofrubber cord composites. The energy-based power law is used to simulate the damage evolution of the cord-rubber interface. The results show that the interface damage is caused by the torque that the cord bears during the stretching process, and theinterface assumes the role of transmitting torque in this process, so the failure occurred. The initial interface stiffness is a vitalbonding interface parameter that affects the interface damage evolution, and the initial stiffness is positively correlated withthe interface damage evolution variable. The increase in the included angle of the cord will cause the torque on the cord toincrease, resulting in aggravated interface failure.

Porcine parvovirus nonstructural protein NS1 activates NF-κB and it involves TLR2 signaling pathway

        Xiaohui Jin,Yixin Yuan,Chi Zhang,Yong Zhou,Yue Song,Zhanyong Wei,Gaiping Zhang 대한수의학회 2020 Journal of Veterinary Science Vol.21 No.3

Background: Porcine parvovirus (PPV) is a single-stranded DNA virus that causes porcine reproductive failure. It is of critical importance to study PPV pathogenesis for the prevention and control of the disease. NS1, a PPV non-structural protein, is participated in viral DNA replication, transcriptional regulation, and cytotoxicity. Our previous research showed that PPV can activate nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) signaling pathway and then up-regulate the expression of interleukin (IL)-6. Objectives: Herein, the purpose of this study is to determine whether the non-structural protein NS1 of PPV also has the same function. Methods: Real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR), enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, western blot, immunofluorescence assay and small interfering RNA (siRNA) were used. Results: Our findings demonstrated that PPV NS1 protein can up-regulate the expression levels of IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor-alpha in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, PPV NS1 protein was found to induce the phosphorylation of IκBα, then leading to the phosphorylation and nuclear translocation of NF-κB. In addition, the NS1 protein activated the upstream pathways of NF-κB. Meanwhile, TLR2-siRNA assay showed TLR2 plays an important role in the activation of NF-κB signaling pathway induced by PPV-NS1. Conclusions: These findings indicated that PPV NS1 protein induced the up-regulated of IL-6 expression through activating the TLR2 and NF-κB signaling pathways. In conclusion, these findings provide a new avenue to study the innate immune mechanism of PPV infection.
