Association Between Convenience of Transportation and Unmet Healthcare Needs of Rural Elderly in Korea

Choi, Youngeun,Nam, Kiryong,Kim, Chang-yup The Korean Society for Preventive Medicine 2019 Journal of Preventive Medicine and Public Health Vol.52 No.6

Objectives: In rural areas of Korea, where public transportation infrastructure is lacking and alternative systems are poor, the elderly experience inconveniences in using healthcare, although their need is high. This study aimed to analyze the association between the convenience of transportation and unmet healthcare needs among the rural elderly. Methods: The data used were collected in the 2016 Community Health Survey among rural elderly individuals aged 65 or older. Dependent variable was the unmet healthcare needs, explanatory variable was the convenience of transportation. The elderly were divided into 3 groups: with no driver in the household, with a driver, and the elderly individual was the driver (the self-driving group). Covariates were classified into predisposing, enabling, and need factors. They included gender, age, education, income, economic activity, household type, motor ability, subjective health level, number of chronic diseases, anxiety/depression, and pain/discomfort. The data were analyzed using logistic regression and stratification. Results: A significant association was found between the convenience of transportation and unmet healthcare needs. When examined unadjusted odds ratio of the group with a driver in the household, using the group with no driver as a reference, was 0.61 (95% confidence interval [CI], 0.54 to 0.68), while that of the self-driving group was 0.34 (95% CI, 0.30 to 0.38). The odds ratios adjusted for all factors were 0.69 (95% CI, 0.59 to 0.80) and 0.79 (95% CI, 0.67 to 0.91). Conclusions: We confirmed a significant association between inconvenient transportation and unmet healthcare needs among the rural elderly even after adjustment for existing known factors. This implies that policies aimed at improving healthcare accessibility must consider the means of transportation available.

Silk fibroin particles as templates for mineralization of calcium‐deficient hydroxyapatite

Choi, Youngeun,Cho, Se Youn,Park, Doo Jin,Park, Hyun Ho,Heo, Semi,Jin, Hyoung‐,Joon Wiley Subscription Services, Inc., A Wiley Company 2012 Journal of Biomedical Materials Research Part B Vol. No.

Abstract

Silk fibroin particles prepared by phase separation with polyethylene oxide were coated with calcium‐deficient hydroxyapatite (CDHA) crystals under various pH conditions. For different pH values, the growth and the morphology of CDHA crystals on the surface of silk fibroin particles were investigated in detail by zeta potential analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and X‐ray diffraction techniques. Negative charges formed by deprotonation of the functional groups on the surface of silk fibroin particles at high pH lead to an increase of binding affinity between the calcium ions of the CDHA crystals and the functional groups of the silk fibroin particles. Consequently, the generation of many CDHA crystals was promoted to deposit on the surface of silk fibroin particles at a high pH value. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Pentacene Crystal Formation on the Surface of Silk Fibroin Films

        Choi, Youngeun,Yun, Young Soo,Cho, Se Youn,Lee, Min Eui,Jin, Hyoung-Joon 한국섬유공학회 2013 FIBERS AND POLYMERS Vol.14 No.12

Silk fibroin (SF) has attracted interest as a gate dielectric due to its electrical insulation and high mobility in pentacene based organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). In this research, the surface energy of SF is controlled by water annealing, ethanol, and methanol solution treatments in order to study the effect of pentacene morphology on SF thin films with various treatments. For different crystallization methods, the crystal structures and surface energies of SF were investigated in detail by FT-IR and contact angle. Methanol treated SF thin film has a lower surface energy than the other two thin films. Topologies of pentacene on the SF thin films with various surface energies were obtained by atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM results showed that the smallest grain size of pentacene was that on methanol treated SF thin film which demonstrated that methanol treated SF thin film can be a proper candidate for a gate dielectric in OTFTs.

Vol.39 No.2

Jeju International Airport is experiencing heavy congestion and delays due to the rapid increase of passengers. As of 2019, delays occurred in 24,052 aircraft, which account for over 14% of all flights operated. This delay rate is about 1.5 times higher than the average delay rate of 9% at domestic airports. The factors which bring delays at Jeju International Airport may include saturation of runway capacity, poor weather conditions, and limitations in facility layout. However, there are insufficient empirical studies on how these factors have affected aircraft delays. This study analyzed the effects of airport operation characteristics, weather conditions, and aircraft operation characteristics on aircraft delay using tower-log data of Jeju International Airport and Aeronautical Climatological Statistics of Jeju International Airport of Aviation Meteorological Office. The result of the analysis shows, aircraft movements per day, aircraft movements per hour, time of day, wind, route and aircraft occupancy rate have a statistically significant effect on aircraft delay, and the relative importance of variables appeared in the order of aircraft movements per day, wind, visual, and aircraft occupancy rate. In addition, these variables were analyzed to have a statistically significant effect on the delay time of aircraft. The results of this research are expected to be used as a basic data for aircraft delay management in airport planning and operation, and contribute to improve methodology of the feasibility study for airport projects.
