The biological activities of fruits of Poncirus trifoliata have been studied. 70% Ethanol extract of Ponciri Fructus was fractionated with ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol by turns. The ether fraction showed antibacterial activity on Staphylococcus aureus and inhibited the contractability of the isolated mice ileum. The ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions showed the anti-edematous effect on the carrageenin-induced edema of rat hindpaw. From the n-butanol fraction, one of the flavonoid glycoside was isolated and identified as poncirin. Ponciri Fructus contained about 6% poncirin which was 5,7-dihydroxy-4''-methoxy flavanone rhamnoglucoside and poncirin showed antiinflammatory activities. Poncirin was considered as the major effective component of Ponciri Fructus.

Pharmacological effects of water extracts of Lycii Fructus, Lycii Folium and Lycii Cortex Radicis from Lycium chinensis were investigated. Lycii Folium significantly protected the hepatic function from damages orally caused by $CCl_4 $administration in mice and had a strong hypoglycemic effect in hyperglycemic mice induced by streptozotocin. Lycii Fructus decreased the blood pressure rise associated with the growth of normal rats. Lycii Cortex Radicis had a strong hypoglycemic effect in hyrerglycemic mice induced by streptozotocin. Also, hypolipidemic effects in hyperlipidemic rats induced by 1% cholesterol fed-diet and 75% fructose were significantly observed by oral administration of water extracts of Lycii Fructus, Lycii Folium and Lycii Cortex Radicis.

Poncirin and naringin which are the flavanone rhamnoglucoside showed anti-inflammatory activity as the major component of fruit of Poncirus trifoliata. Poncirin was metabolized by intestinal bacteria of human and rats. Among the human intestinal bacteria, Bacteroides JY-6 converted a poncirin to natingin, ponciretin-beta-D-glucopyranoside, naringenin-beta-D-glucopyranoside, naringenin and ponciretin and did a naringin to poncirin, ponciretin-beta-D-glucopyranoside, naringenin-beta-D-glucopyranoside, naringenin and ponciretin.

Two kinds of gangliosides contained in deer horns were determined by integrating the peaks of TLC densitometry. Japanese deer horn originated from China showed the highest gangliosides among tested samples and the upper parts in deer horns showed higher gangliosides than the lower parts. In the case of graded samples, the best grade A showed the highest content and the worst grade E did the lowest content. Sixteen kinds of free amino acids were analyzed by auto amino acid analyzer. The lower region the deer horn was, the more the total content of free amino acids was and several kinds of amino acids were contained quite regularly.

Several experiments were carried for the purpose of establishing the basis for the quality evaluation of deer horn. Deer horn originated from China, New Zealand, Soviet and Alaska were used as objectives and some constituents involved in deer horn were assayed and compared with one another. Five kinds of trace elements including Ca and Fe were determined by atomic absorbance spectroscopy. The more the region came down from the top of the deer horn, the more the ratio of Ca to Fe content (Ca/Fe) was increased. The same increasing tendancy was observed in the case of ash content. Gangliosides were isolated from deer horn by alumina column chromatography and identified by TLC using gangliosides Type II obtained from bovine brain as the standard material. The TLC chromatograms were scanned by dual wavelength TLC scanner, then those TLC profiles were compared. Deer horn from China and New Zealand were analogous but those from Soviet and Alaska were each distinguished in their TLC profiles.
