        Coalescence behavior of dispersed domains in binary immiscible fluid mixtures having bimodal size distributions under steady shear flow

        Coalescence process of binary immiscible fluid mixtures having bimodal size distributions, prepared by mixing two pre-sheared samples at different shear rates, ${\gamma}_{pre1}\;and\;{\gamma}_{pre2}$, under shear flow at a final shear rate, ${\gamma}_f$, are examined by transient shear stress measurements and microscopic observations in comparison with the results for simply pre-sheared samples having narrow size distributions (unimodal distribution samples). Component fluids are a silicone oil (PDMS) and a hydrocarbon-formaldehyde resin (Genelite) and their viscosities are 14.1 and 21.0 $pa{\cdot}sec$ at room temperature $(ca.\;20^{\circ}C)$, respectively. The weight ratio of PDMS: Genelite was 7:3. Three cases, $({\gamma}_{pre1}=7.2sec^{-1},\;{\gamma}_{pre2}=12.0sec^{-1}\;and\;{\gamma}_f=2.4sec^{-1}),\;({\gamma}_{pre1}=0.8sec^{-1},\;{\gamma}_{pre2}=4.0sec^{-1}\;and\;{\gamma}_f=2.4sec^{-1}),\;and\;({\gamma}_{pre1}=7.2sec^{-1},\;{\gamma}_{pre2}=12.0^sec^{-1}\;and\;{\gamma}_f=7.2sec^{-1})$ the first case, transient shear stress did not show any significant difference but domains larger than the initial state are observed at short times. In the latter cases, there exist undershoot of shear stress, reflecting existence of deformed large domains, which is confirmed by the direct observation. It is concluded that coalescence between large and small domains more frequently occur than coalescence between the domains with similar size in the bimodal distribution samples.

        ASEAN-New Zealand Trade Relations and Trade Potential: Evidence and Analysis

        This study examines the development of trade between ASEAN and New Zealand. Indices of trade intensity and trade potential are used to analyse the intensity of existing trade for the period 1980~2010 and trade potential going forward. This is the first use of the trade potential method to assess the trade potential between New Zealand and ASEAN across industries. The results show significant potential for future growth in specific export sectors and demonstrate changing trade patterns between New Zealand and ASEAN members. Our findings also show that New Zealand-ASEAN trade has intensified over the years, even if it has been marked by fluctuations. This study also highlights development of Australian trade with ASEAN in the context of the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA. Our findings have implications for the integration of ASEAN with Australia and New Zealand

        Effects of ruminal administration of soy sauce oil on functional fatty acids in the rumen, blood and milk of dairy cows

        Objective: Soy sauce oil, a byproduct of whole soybean processing by the soy sauce industry, was evaluated as a source of linoleic acid for dairy cows for the purpose of manipulating the composition of milk. Methods: Eight dairy Holstein cows fitted with rumen cannulas were used for ruminal administration of soy sauce oil for a 28-day period using a 4×4 Latin square study design with 4 doses (0, 200, 400, and 600 g soy sauce oil/d). Results: Although dry matter intake and milk yield were not affected by soy sauce oil administration, ruminal concentrations of total volatile fatty acids and acetate were decreased, specifically at 600 g/d administration. While milk fat percentage was decreased with administration of soy sauce oil, proportions of linoleic, vaccenic and conjugated linoleic acids in the rumen, blood and milk were increased with increasing soy sauce oil dose. Conclusion: These results suggest that soy sauce oil feeding could be useful for improving milk functionality without adverse effects on animal production performance when fed at less than 400 g/d.

        Foxf2 represses bone formation via Wnt2b/β-catenin signaling

        Differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into osteoblasts is a critical process for proper skeletal development and acquisition/maintenance of bone mass. However, since this regulatory mechanism has not yet been fully elucidated, the treatment of severe osteoporosis and fractures is a challenge. Here, through a comprehensive analysis of gene expression during the differentiation of MSCs into osteoblasts, we show that the forkhead transcription factor Foxf2 is a crucial regulator of this process. Foxf2 expression transiently increased during MSC osteoblastic differentiation. Overexpression of Foxf2 in MSCs inhibited osteoblastic differentiation, and conversely, knockdown of Foxf2 expression promoted this process. Osteoprogenitor-specific Foxf2 knockout mice developed a high bone mass phenotype due to increased bone formation. RNA-seq analysis and molecular experiments revealed that Foxf2 regulation of bone formation is mediated by Wnt2b. Knockdown of Foxf2 in mouse femurs enhanced bone regeneration in vivo. FOXF2 expression was correlated with hip bone mineral density in postmenopausal women with low bone mass. Finally, inhibition of FOXF2 promoted osteoblastic differentiation of human MSCs. This study uncovers a critical role of Foxf2 in the differentiation of MSCs into osteoblasts and provides insight into the pathogenesis associated with bone-related diseases such as osteoporosis and nonunion after fracture

        Effect of ruminal administration of soy sauce oil on rumen fermentation, milk production and blood parameters in dairy cows

        Objective: To evaluate soy sauce oil (a by-product of making whole soybean soy sauce) as a new dietary lipid source, a large amount of soy sauce oil was administered into the rumen of dairy cows. Methods: Four Holstein dairy cows fitted with rumen cannulae were used in a 56-day experiment. Ruminal administration of soy sauce oil (1 kg/d) was carried out for 42 days from day 8 to day 49 to monitor nutritional, physiological and production responses. Results: Dry matter intake and milk yield were not affected by soy sauce oil administration, whereas 4% fat-corrected milk yield and the percentage of milk fat decreased. Although ruminal concentration of total volatile fatty acids (VFA) and the proportion of individual VFA were partially affected by administration of soy sauce oil, values were within normal ranges, showing no apparent inhibition in rumen fermentation. Administration of soy sauce oil decreased the proportions of milk fatty acids with a carbon chain length of less than 18, and increased the proportions of stearic, oleic, vaccenic and conjugated linoleic acids. Conjugated linoleic acid content in milk became 5.9 to 8.8 times higher with soy sauce oil administration. Blood serum concentrations of non-esterified fatty acid, 3-hydroxybutyric acid, total cholesterol, free cholesterol, esterified cholesterol, triglyceride and phospholipid increased with administration of soy sauce oil, suggesting a higher energy status of the experimental cows. Conclusion: The results suggest that soy sauce oil could be a useful supplement to potentially improve milk functionality without adverse effects on ruminal fermentation and animal health. More detailed analysis is necessary to optimize the supplementation level of this new lipid source in feeding trials.

        Effect of feeding tamarind kernel powder extract residue on digestibility, nitrogen availability and ruminal fermentation in wethers

        Objective: This study was to examine in vivo digestibility, nitrogen balance and ruminal fermentation of tamarind (Tamarind indica) kernel powder extract residue (TKPER) compared to soybean products and by-products in wethers. Methods: Four wethers with initial body weight (BW) of 51.6±5.5 kg were assigned in a 4×4 Latin square design to investigate nutritional characteristics of TKPER, dry heat soybean (SB), dry soybean curd residue (SBCR) and soybean meal (SBM) feeding with ryegrass straw (R) at a ratio of 1:1 at 2% of BW in dry matter (DM) on a daily basis. Results: The digestibility of DM, crude protein, and ether extract (EE) of TKPER-R diet were 57.0%, 87.0%, and 86.0%, respectively. Higher non-fiber carbohydrates digestibility was observed in TKPER-R diet (83.2%) than in SB-R diet (73.9%, p<0.05). Wethers fed the TKPER-R diet had lower retention of nitrogen (N) and ruminal ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) contents at 4 h after feeding than those fed the SBM-R diet (p<0.05), which had values similar to the SB-R or SBCR-R diet. The TKPER feeding had higher propionate (C3) and lower butyrate content, as well as lower acetate to propionate ratio (C2:C3) in rumen fluid than SBM feeding at 4 h after feeding (p<0.05). Conclusion: TKPER did not bring any side effect to the wethers although it was lack of fiber, and could be used as a high protein and energy ingredient in concentrate with appropriate roughage to meet the fiber requirement for ruminants.

        Influence of Water Absorption and Temperature on the Mechanical Properties of Discontinuous Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polyamide 6

        Carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTP) show relatively high mechanical properties and are expected tobe feasible materials for mass production of light-weight structures. In particular, discontinuous CFRTP (DCFRTP) with affordable resins have been developed to realize excellent formability and mechanical properties. Currently, polyamide 6 (PA6) is a promising matrix for CFRTP in mass-produced automobiles. However, due to the hygroscopic and viscoelastic properties of polyamide resins, the influence of water absorption on the mechanical properties of CFRTP under varying temperature is necessary to be investigated. In this study, the influence of water absorption on the mechanical properties of discontinuous CF/PA6 composites was investigated. Chopped carbon fiber tape reinforced thermoplastics (CTT), which are randomly oriented strand (ROS) composites, were selected as DCFRTP. The mechanical properties of the composites were investigated by a three point bending test between -40 and 125 oC, as a function of water absorption. The flexural modulus were calculated using the Timoshenko beam equation to predict degradation by water absorption. The mechanical properties of CTT have a relatively high sensitivity to water absorption.

        Effects of Add-on Ramelteon on Cognitive Impairment in Patients with Schizophrenia: An Open-label Pilot Trial

        Objective: This open-label study examined the effects of ramelteon on cognitive functions in 10 outpatients with schizophrenia. Methods: Ramelteon (8 mg/day) was administered to 10 patients with schizophrenia for six months. The verbal fluency test,Trail-Making Test, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, the Stroop Test, the Digit Span Distraction Test, Iowa Gambling Task, theRey Auditory Verbal Learning Test were evaluated at baseline and 6 months after treatment with ramelteon. Results: Ramelteon improved significantly the scores of Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test. Additionally, ramelteon exerted improvementsin the verbal fluency and Iowa Gambling Task in 4 patients. Conclusion: Ramelteon could be a potential therapeutic drug, in adjunctive treatment of learning and memory deficits seenin patients with schizophrenia.
