        Video Lectures in EFL E-Learning Contexts: Effects of Lecture Engagement and Media Variety on Student Learning and Motivation

        As online learning increases in importance as a part of higher education, methods of understanding the most important instructional aspect of online learning, the video lecture, become more important. Video lectures are used as the main pedagogical tool in online learning situations and understanding how they can be used is of great value in research into online learning. The purpose of the present study is verifying the effect of online lectures on EFL students learning and motivation. A total of 111 university students taking online classes participated in the study. To verify the effect of video lectures, a survey was conducted for the present study. This survey was conducted among students who were taking classes with many video lectures. The results of the study revealed that, as video lectures increased in media variety, there was a correlation with higher levels of student motivation and learning. Furthermore, higher levels of student engagement in video lectures correlated with higher levels of learning. However, engagement in video lectures did not affect motivation. These results are of value as they increase understanding of how online videos can improve the learning environment while having more media variety can engage students and improve their learning.

      • 읽기 가독성(readability)이 영어 어휘 기억력 및 영어 읽기 능력 신장에 미치는 효과성 연구

        음성언어를 활용한 의사소통이 강조되고는 있으나, 우리나라와 같은 EFL(English as a Foreign Language) 상황에서 문자를 통한 의사소통이 차지하는 비중은 적지 않다. 본 연구에서는 효과적인 의사소통을 위한 필수요소인 읽기 능력과 어휘력 향상을 위한 방안으로 학습자의 수준어 부합하는 가독성(readability)이 확보된 읽기 자료의 활용이 학습자의 영어 읽기 능력과 어휘 기억력 향상에 미치는 영향을 살펴보았다. 중학교 3학년 학생들을 대상으로 실시한 실험연구에서 한국교육과정평가원에서 출제하는 고등학교 신입생 선발고사의 읽기 문항, 중학교 3학년 영어 교과서 본문 등에 대하여 Lexile Measure를 활용한 분석 결과를 통해 중학교 3학년 수준에 적절한 가독성 지수를 도출하였다. 도출 된 기준 지수에 부합하는 읽기 자료를 선별하여 제공한 실험집단과 해당 학교에서 활용하고 있는 교과용 도서의 읽기 자료를 제공한 통제집단에 대한 실험을 수행한 결과, 실험집단에서 영어 읽기 능력 및 어휘 기억력 향상에 효과성이 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구가 상대적으로 적은 연구 대상, 짧은 연구 기간 등 여러 제한점을 가지고 있으나, 우리나라 영어교육 상황에서 학습자의 수준에 부합하는 읽기 가독성 지수의 개발, 가독성을 고려한 교재 및 평가 개발 등 가독성과 관련된 후속 연구가 지속적으로 수행될 필요가 있을 것이다. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of readability-oriented reading materials on improvement of middle school students’ ability to memorize vocabulary and reading comprehension ability. For this study, 43 in the third grade were selected as subjects. They were divided into two groups. Readability-oriented reading materials were adapted to the experimental group while textbook-oriented reading materials were adapted to the controlled one. To verify the effectiveness of readability-oriented reading materials for improvement of reading competence, two types of reading comprehension test were carried out before and after the experiment. And to verify the ability to memorize vocabulary, vocabulary memorization test were carried out after the experiment. The analysis of the administered tests suggested that the effect of adapting readability-oriented reading materials on middle school students reading comprehension and vocabulary memorization proved to be significantly positive.

        학습자의 학습 전략 및 학습 유형이 영어 쓰기 능력에 미치는 영향

        본 연구는 EFL 상황에서의 학습자가 가지고 있는 학습 전략과 학습자가 활용하는 학습 유형이 영어 쓰기 능력 향상에 미치는 영향을 살펴보는데 그 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위하여 대학생 129명을 대상으로 학습자의 학습 전략과 학습자가 활용하는 학습 유형이 쓰기 능력 수행에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위한 설문조사가 수행되었다. 연구 결과, 학습 전략에 있어서는 읽기 중심의 학습 전략을 활용하는 학습자가 듣기 중심의 학습 전략을 활용하는 학습자보다 영어 쓰기 능력에 긍정적 영향을 미친다고 인식하는 것으로 나타났으며, 협동학습 중심의 학습 전략 역시 학습자의 쓰기 능력 향상에 효과적인 것으로 나타났다. 학습 유형의 경우, Kolb의 분류에 근거한 학습자 유형을 기준으로 분석한 결과, 동화 (assimilating), 수용(accommodating), 분산(diverging) 유형의 학습자들은 집단 간에 유사 함이 발견되었으나, 융합(converging) 유형의 학습자들은 다른 유형에 비해 현저하게 높은 수준에서 쓰기 능력 향상에 긍정적 영향을 주고 있는 것으로 나타났다. The investigation of student’s individual characteristics and their impact on learning is an area of value in education. More specifically, student’s individual study strategies and learning styles impact on performance and is an important part of the puzzle in understanding learning in many contexts. For these reasons the present study looks at EFL students (n = 129) in South Korea and analyzes the relationship between learning strategies and Kolb’s learning styles with writing performance. The present research used a survey in the Fall semester of 2018. The study found that learning strategies involving reading improved writing, as did study strategies involving group work. Furthermore, converging learning styles performed better than other types of learning styles when it came to writing performance. These results are important in that they show the importance of student characteristic to in-class work.

        K-pop의 영어교육적 활용 가능성에 대한 연구

        The purpose of this study is to examine the feasibility of utilizing K-pop in primary and secondary English education in Korea. For this purpose, 3 specific areas were focused; 1) the coincidental vocabulary appearances between two word lists: K-pop based word list and basic word list presented in the 2009 RNEC(Revised National English Curriculum), 2) the general attitude of 807 students (391 primary and 416 middle) toward K-pop as an English learning tool, 3) the attitude of 141 English teachers (71 primary and 70 secondary) for K-pop as an English teaching tool. The result of the study revealed the followings: 1) Over 70% words of K-pop based word list (based on the 2012 chart of Billboard Korea) are also listed in the basic word list presented in the 2009 RNEC. 2) Over 80% of students are interested in learning English using K-pop. 3) After informing K-pop based word list, English version of K-pop and K-pop covers on Youtube, the result of each survey(1st and 2nd) showed that the teachers’ attitude moved from the negative side to the positive side. From these results it can be expected that K-pop will be considered an effective English teaching tool in Korea.

        영어어문교육 학술지에 게재된 교사 관련 연구에 대한 고찰

        The purpose of this study is to review and analyze the teacher-related articles in English Language & Literature Teaching over the past 19 years(1995~2013). Out of the total of 628 articles, 51 were selected for the present study. These studies were reviewed in terms of four perspectives: (1) historical trends, (2) main research topics, (3) levels of the subjects, (4) methodology of research. The results of analysis were as follows: 12 articles out of 51 were conducted from 1995~2007 and 39 were done from 2008~2013. Articles about teacher in-service training were ranked highest. Out of the articles, 25% was about elementary school level, 34% was about middle school level, 33% was about high school level, and 25% was about college level. Empirical research was adapted as a methodology in 88.24% of teacher-related articles. Some trends and insights about teacher-related research could be ascertained from the results of the present study.

        선택적 지각(selective perception)이 중학생의 영어 읽기 능력 및 영어 학습 태도에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of selective perception on middle school students’ English reading competence and attitude toward English reading in Korea. For this study, 80 middle school students were selected as subjects. They were divided into two groups(40 students for each group). The reading materials from the reading comprehension books published by EBS were adapted to the experimental group while the reading materials from 5 different textbooks for middle school 3rd grade were adopted to the controlled one. The reading materials from EBS books are shorter than the ones from textbook and they cover wider range of topics. To verify the effectiveness of the present study, 2 reading ability tests and 1 questionnaire were designed and they were administered before and after the experiment. The result of the study revealed the followings: 1) Using reading materials from EBS is more effective for the improvement of reading ability. 2) Using the reading materials from EBS is also effective for the improving positive attitude toward English reading.

        There has always been a popular demand for effective retrieval of music data by users. In order to make music retrieval more effective, music needs to be represented in an effective way. In this paper we propose a visual method of representing music input by users for effective retrieval of music from database. It enables users to express their description of music requests in a more convenient way than the previous ones. The proposed visual representation of music can be used to express users' demand for content-based music retrieval. This paper illustrates the effectiveness of the proposed approach by applying it to a content-based music retrieval system for Korean folk music database.

        Metadata is important because it aids in clarifying and finding the actual data. For multimedia data, metadata provides effective way to describe the data itself, and also to support alternative search methods. This paper describes a web portal system which supports management of Korean traditional Namdo folk music. It also proposes metadata structure to describe Korean Namdo traditional folk songs effectively.

        A Query Randomizing Technique for breaking ‘Filter Bubble’

        The personalized search algorithm is a search system that analyzes the user`s IP, cookies, log data, and search history to recommend the desired information. As a result, users are isolated in the information frame recommended by the algorithm. This is called `Filter bubble` phenomenon. Most of the personalized data can be deleted or changed by the user, but data stored in the service provider‘s server is difficult to access. This study suggests a way to neutralize personalization by keeping on sending random query words. This is to confuse the data accumulated in the server while performing search activities with words that are not related to the user. We have analyzed the rank change of the URL while conducting the search activity with 500 random query words once using the personalized account as the experimental group. To prove the effect, we set up a new account and set it as a control. We then searched the same set of queries with these two accounts, stored the URL data, and scored the rank variation. The URLs ranked on the upper page are weighted more than the lower-ranked URLs. At the beginning of the experiment, the difference between the scores of the two accounts was insignificant. As experiments continue, the number of random query words accumulated in the server increases and results show meaningful difference.

        자하 하디드 건축 공간에 나타난 예각(Acute Angle)의 특성 연구

        현대사회에 있어서, 다양성과 새로운 패러다임의 건축이 표현되어 지고 있다. 그 중 자하 하디드는 기존의 단순 사각형의 모던한 건축의 단조로움의 형이상학적 틀을 깨는 것과 동시에 러시아 구상주의의 배경을 바탕으로 자하 하디드의 건축과 공간의 표현적 방법이 다양해지면서 재현적 형태에서 벗어난 시각으로 보이지 않는 사고적 형태의 도구로써 발전되고 있다. 기존의 건축적 패턴에서 탈피하여 해체주의 건축 속 비 정형 기하학의 형태를 통한 자하 하디드는 포스트 모던건축이 현대 건축에 새로운 미학적 개념을 시도하고, 현대철학과 사회이론의 공통된 사유방식을 바탕으로 건축적 어휘를 재해석하여 다양한 조형의 형태를 포현하고 있다. 또한 추상적 조형체와 조합을 통해 특유의 모호성을 더욱 극명하게 드러내는 경향을 보인다. 이를 바탕으로 자하 하디드 건축과 공간의 사례를 분석한 결과로 의거 하여, 자하 하디드 특유의 건축과 공간 속에서 나타난 예각적 특성을 분석하고, 예각적 요소들이 건축과 공간의 사고개념과 형태적표현 요소의 영향을 확장 시키고자 했다. 이에 자하 하디드 건축에서 나타나는 의미와 표현 요소를 통한 예각적 특성을 통해, 기능성, 시간성, 공간성, 장소성으로 이어지게 되는 가장 중요한 역할을 보여준다. The diversity and the construction of a new paradigm is being expressed in the modern society. Zaha Hadid has been breaking frame of monotony from the traditional architecture that is simplicity square. At the same time, Zaha Hadid's architecture and space expressive ways has been diversed and developed the invisible forms of thinking as a tool beyond representational form based on the background of the Russian conception. Zaha Hadid who breaks away from the traditional pattern of architecture and forms the non-formal geometry architectural deconstructivism, tries new aesthetic concepts, expresses the various forms of the molding through reinterpreting architectural vocabularies based on the modern philosophy and the common social theory. In addition, unique ambiguity tends to be more clearly demonstrated through abstract shapes and combination of forms. Based on this analysis, Zaha Hadid architecture' spaces and shapes that analysis is unique characteristics of an acute angle represented in Zaha Hadid' architecture. Acute architectural elements tried to expand the character that is concepts and expressive forms in the architecture and space. According to Zaha Hadid architectural presentation elements and characteristics of an acute angle, functionality, temporality, spatiality, place that is the most important roles.
