This study was carried out to investigate the current nutritional problems owing to the increased consumption of westernized food in Korea and also was conducted to compare the nutritional characteristics of Korean traditional meal with those of the Western diet in similar serving size. The results obtained from nutritional evaluation are as follows: 1. The percentage of calories represented by carbohydrate: lipid: protein was 65:15:20 respectively for Korean traditional meal (Table setting of 3 Chop) therefore these ratios meet the dietary recommended allowances for Koreans. 2. Nutrient values of Korean traditional 3-Chop were shown to be better balanced than those of Western diet when the nutrients of the two types of diet were estimated by similar serving sizes and calories. 3. Compared to the Korean traditional meal, most fast foods were nutritionally imbalanced especially in that most of them showed higher amounts of fats. These results show that Korean traditional meals supply ideal nutrient intakes in contrasts to the westernized diet, therefore much work remains in developing a variety of menus and standard recipes for Korean traditional meals according to the changes in diet trends as well as emphasing the importance of Korean traditional meals as part of an ideal, well-banlanced diet.

In this study, bovine Dnmt1 cDNA was sequenced and detected Dnmt1 mRNA level in bovine tissues by northern blot, methylation pattern of genome by southern blot, specific localization of Dnmt1 in mouse and bovine preimplantation embryos by immunocytostaining and Dnmt1 protein level in ovary and testis by western blot. Bovine Dnmt1 cDNA sequence showed more homology with that of human than mouse and rat. The RNA level of Dnmt1 was 10 times higher expression in placenta than other tissues. This indicates that placenta was hypermethylated compared to others organs. The genomic DNA could not be cut by a specific restriction enzyme (HpaII) in placenta, lung and liver of bovine. It suggests that Dnmt1 in some somatic cells was already methylated. Dnmt1, which has the antibody epitope 1316~1616, was distributed in nucleus and cytoplasm including the stage of pronuclear stage and maturation of oocyte and gradually weaken to blastocyst stage compare to negative. In addition, Dnmt1 was strongly expressed in tetraploid embryo and cloned 8-cell than IVF 8-cell. An aberrant pattern of DNA methylation in cloned embryo may be abnormal development of fetus, embryonic lethality and placenta dysfunction. The somatic specific band (190kDa) was appeared in ovary and testis, but oocyte specific band (175kDa) was not. Further investigations are necessary to understand the complex links between the methyltransferases and the transcriptional activity of genes in the cloned bovine tissues.

Due to rapid industrialization and urbanization in 20th century, the chances got scarcer for today`s children to encounter and interact with nature. However, to familiarize children with nature and thus to enhance a nature-friendly attitude in their life, it is important to expose them to nature early in life as childhood is a critical stage for developing emotions and senses of values. Floral design uses nature and natural subjects as main materials and themes. Therefore, when combined with a proper field, floral design can help children develop nature-friendly attitude. This study aims to indirectly expose children living in nature-deprived environment to nature by adapting floral design to children`s picture books. Picture book is a medium easily accessible to children and floral design applied to picture books can enrich children`s emotion with natural images while experiencing nature firsthand is not possible. Firstly, the concept of picture books and representation techniques are explored to help understanding picture book illustration. Then, with examples of picture book illustrations using natural objects, we will look into the need for picture books with natural elements in growing nature-friendly children. Finally, some scenes from researcher`s own picture book with floral art works were presented as possible examples that can promote a children`s intimacy toward nature. Using floral art works in picture books have certain difficulties in choosing techniques, materials and in expressiveness compared to other traditional ways to create picture books, but it is a worthwhile attempt to deliver liveliness of nature minimizing degeneration of natural objects by using them in their own forms. We hope this study would promote likely attempts and become a stepping stone for other works using floral art as a form in picture book creating.

A recent study reported that endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) are one of the reservoirs of Kaposi's sarcoma associated herpesvirus (KSHV). Although EPCs are closely linked to angiogenesis and vasculogenesis, little is known about the angiogenic potential of KSHV in EPCs. In this study, we used EPCs isolated from human umbilical cord blood to show that early infection by KSHV in vitro impaired the neovascularization of EPCs in matrigel. Our results suggest that KSHV may disrupt the angiogenic potential of EPCs and that the disseminated infection of KSHV could be associated with EPC dysfunction.

Abstract

This study investigated the effects of mixture proportion and curing condition on the mechanical and shrinkage behaviors of high-performance fiber-reinforced cementitious composites (HPFRCCs). Different water-to-binder (W/B) ratios and amounts of mineral admixtures, such as zirconium silica fume (Zr SF) and blast furnace slag were evaluated. The test results indicate that initial steam-heat curing accelerated the strength development and was sufficient to develop its full strength. The ultimate autogenous shrinkage was insignificantly affected by the curing conditions, but the heat curing accelerated the development of autogenous shrinkage. HPFRCC with a lower W/B ratio and greater amount of Zr SF exhibited higher autogenous shrinkage but lower drying shrinkage. In addition, the amount of total shrinkage of HPFRCC was more effectively reduced by providing heat curing when a higher W/B ratio and a smaller amount of Zr SF were used. There were no increases in the autogenous and drying shrinkage for HPFRCC immediately after finishing the initial heat curing, meaning that there is no possibility of shrinkage cracks forming in HPFRCC elements after the heat curing process. Finally, the autogenous shrinkage behaviors of HPFRCC were simulated with several prediction models from literature and an optimized model, considering equivalent age, was suggested.

Highlights

Ultimate autogenous shrinkage of HPFRCCs is insignificantly affected by curing condition.

Lower W/B ratio and higher amount of Zr SF result in higher autogenous shrinkage but lower drying shrinkage.

After heating curing, there are no increases of autogenous and drying shrinkage strains of HPFRCCs.

Total shrinkage of SC150 and SC120 is effectively reduced by applying heat curing.

Background : Postoperative pain control in children is a difficult problem for management. Fentanyl is one of the most commonly used narcotics in infants and children due to its rapid onset and brief duration. Infants older than 3 months had a lower incidence of apnea than adults given fentanyl; however, the dosage of fentanyl varies a great deal depending on the purpose and plan for the postoperative management. This study is designed to evaluate the effective dose of intraoperative intravenous fentanyl for pain control following inguinal herniorrhaphy in pediatric patients. Methods : Sixty children for inguinal herniorrhaphy under general anesthesia were divided into four groups. Group Ⅰ received no analgesics as a control. Group II, III and Ⅳ received intravenous fentanyl 0.5 ug/kg, 1 ug/kg and 1.5 ug/kg respectively. Fentanyl was injected intravenously at the beginning of fascia closure. Extubation time and the degree of pain was evaluated. Results : Our result showed that group III and IV had a lower pain score than that of the control group during the first 30 min in the recovery room(p<0.05), but no significant differences were found between the group III and group IV. The time interval from fascia closure to extubation was prolonged in the group II, III and IV compared to the control group(p<0.05). But no significant differences were found between the three groups. Conclusion : We suggest that intravenous administration of fentanyl 1 ug/kg at the closure of fascia would be an easy, simple and effective means for relieving postinguinal herniorrhaphy pain in recovery room.
