Objective: This study aimed to investigate the current status of postoperative management of uterine endometrial cancer (EC) in Korea. Methods: A mail survey was administered to members of the Korean Gynecologic Oncology Group and Korean Radiation Oncology Group. A total of 38 gynecologic cancer surgeons (GYNs) and 31 radiation oncologists (RO) in 43 institutions was responded. The questionnaire consisted of general questions for clinical decision and clinical case questions. The GYN and RO responses were compared using chi-square statistics. Results: The 2 expert groups had similar responses for clinical decision based on the results of the Gynecologic Oncology Group (GOG)-249 and Postoperative Radiation Therapy for Endometrial Carcinoma-III trials in the early-stage EC. In contrast, the responses based on GOG-258 results differed, as GYNs most frequently opted for sequential chemotherapy (CTx) and radiotherapy (RT), while ROs preferred concurrent chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced stage (p<0.05). Based on the GOG-258, GYNs preferred CTx alone for adjuvant treatment of serous or clear cell adenocarcinoma histology, whereas ROs advocated for combined CTx and RT (sequential or concurrent). Among the clinical case questions, GYNs were more likely than ROs to choose CTx alone rather than the combination of CTx and RT (sequential or concurrent) as the answers to case questions representing patients with locally advanced stage or unfavorable histology (all p<0.05). Conclusion: The present study showed several different opinions of GYNs and ROs regarding adjuvant treatment for EC, particularly for adjuvant RT in advanced stage or unfavorable histology.

일반적으로 요중 카드뮴 농도는 요비중 또는 요중 크레아티닌 농도로 보정한 값을 사용해왔다. 그러나 어떤 보정방법이 더 타당한지에 대한 논란은 계속되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 비교적 큰 규모의 일반인구집단을 대상으로 요중 카드뮴농도와 각종 신장손상지표들과의 관련성을 평가함에 있어 요비중 보정 방법과 요중 크레아티닌 보정 방법 중 어느 방법이 더 타당한지 비교 평가하였다. 1,086명의 자원자 중 신장질환의 질병력이 있는 사람을 제외한 862명이 최종적으로 연구대상에 포함되었다. 대상자들로부터 측정한 요중 카드뮴 농도 및 malondialdehyde (MDA), N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase 농도, 혈중 크레아티닌을 이용하여 산출한 사구체여과율 등의 신장손상지표들간의 관련성을 평가하였다. 연구 결과, 요중 크레아티닌 농도보다는 요비중으로 보정한 카드뮴 농도가 각종 신장손상지표와 높은 상관성이 있음을 보여주었다. 특히, 요비중 보정 카드뮴 농도는 요중 MDA 농도와 양의 상관관계를, 사구체여과율과는 음의 상관관계를 보여주었다. 이러한 결과는 일반인구집단에서 카드뮴 노출이 많아질수록 사구체여과율이 감소함을 의미하며 이러한 기전에서 산화적스트레스가 관여하고 있음을 보여준다. 또한, 사구체여과율이 카드뮴 노출에 의한 유용한 신장손상지표 중 하나로 사용될 수 있음을 의미한다. In general, specific gravity (SG) and urinary creatinine (CR) have been used to adjust urinary cadmium (Cd) concentrations. However, the validity of correction methods has been controversial. We compared the two adjustments to evaluate associations between urinary Cd and various renal damage markers and to evaluate the relationship between urinary Cd concentration and renal disease markers, such as estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), in a relatively large general population sample. Among the 1,086 volunteers who were enrolled in this study, 862 healthy volunteers who did not have kidney disease were included in the final analysis. Urinary Cd, malondialdehyde (MDA), and N-acetyl-β-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) concentrations were measured, the creatinine-based eGFR was calculated, and the relationships between these markers were subsequently analyzed. This study showed the use of urinary Cd concentration adjusted with SG rather than with urinary creatinine may be appropriate in studies evaluating renal function based on Cd exposure. Urinary Cd concentration adjusted with SG had a positive correlation with urinary MDA levels and a negative correlation with eGFR. This relationship was relatively stronger in women than in men. This study showed that urinary Cd level was associated with decreased eGFR in the general population, and oxidative stress was likely to act as an intermediator in this process. These results suggest that eGFR can be a very good indicator of kidney damage caused by Cd exposure in the general population.

<P>Free induction decay of the coherent electronic transition and coherent phonon oscillations of the radial breathing mode in single-walled carbon nanotubes are simultaneously observed via direct resonant excitation of the lowest E-11 optical transition in the near-infrared region from 0.939 to 1.1 eV. We show that coherent electronic oscillations corresponding to the detuning of the probe energy from resonance can be exploited for the chirality assignment of carbon nanotubes, together with the robust assignment of the coherent lattice vibrations resonantly excited by femtosecond pulses. Excitation spectra show a large number of pronounced peaks that map out chirality distributions in great detail.</P>
Electrical Interconnection with a Smart ACA Composed of Fluxing Polymer and Solder Powder

The interconnection mechanisms of a smart anisotropic conductive adhesive (ACA) during processing have been characterized. For an understanding of chemorheological mechanisms between the fluxing polymer and solder powder, a thermal analysis as well as solder wetting and coalescence experiments were conducted. The compatibility between the viscosity of the fluxing polymer and melting temperature of solder was characterized to optimize the processing cycle. A fluxing agent was also used to remove the oxide layer performed on the surface of the solder. Based on these chemorheological phenomena of the fluxing polymer and solder, an optimum polymer system and its processing cycle were designed for high performance and reliability in an electrical interconnection system. In the present research, a bonding mechanism of the smart ACA with a polymer spacer ball to control the gap between both substrates is newly proposed and investigated. The solder powder was used as a conductive material instead of polymer-based spherical conductive particles in a conventional anisotropic conductive film.

<P>Abstract</P><P>Background: </P><P>In this study, the effectiveness and safety of combining gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) with an abbreviated schedule of standard induction chemotherapy were assessed in 37 patients (aged ≥55) yr with previously untreated acute myeloid leukemia (AML).</P><P>Methods: </P><P>GO was administered at a dose of 6 mg/m<SUP>2</SUP> as a single 2-h intravenous infusion on day 1. Following GO, an abbreviated schedule of induction chemotherapy consisting of idarubicin (12 mg/m<SUP>2</SUP>/d, days 2–4), and <I>N</I>4-behenoyl-1-<I>&bgr;</I>-arabinofuranosyl cytosine (300 mg/m<SUP>2</SUP>/d, days 2–6) was given.</P><P>Results: </P><P>Thirty-seven patients were treated with GO in combination with chemotherapy. Complete remission (CR) and CR with incomplete platelet recovery were achieved in 28 patients (75.7%) and one patient (2.7%) respectively. Two patients (5.4%) died during induction and two patients (5.4%) with grade 4 treatment emergent adverse effects during chemotherapy did not complete induction chemotherapy. The majority of toxicities were mild and manageable. Severe myelosuppresion was universal with significantly prolonged thrombocytopenic period. In total, 25 patients who received consolidation treatment, 19 patients remain alive at the time of analysis. Thirteen patients had undergone hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, three are preparing for transplantation and seven are receiving their consolidation chemotherapy course.</P><P>Conclusion: </P><P>Although only a relatively small number of cases were included in this preliminary study and the follow-up duration was short, frontline GO in combination with attenuated conventional chemotherapy was found to be effective and feasible in elderly patients with AML.</P>
Photoluminescence Characteristics of ZnO Nano Needle-like Rods grown by the Hot Wall Epitaxy Method

We investigated photoluminescence characteristics of ZnO nano needle-like rods grown on a c-plane Al2O3 substrate by the hot wall epitaxy method. The nano-rods were vertically well aligned along the ZnO c-axis. The diameters of the ZnO nano-rods ranged from 20 nm to 30 nm and their lengths were between 600 and 700 nm. In the photoluminescence spectrum at 10 K, the exciton emission bound to the neutral donor dominated while defect related emission was weakly observed. With a further increase of temperature, the free exciton emission appeared and eventually became dominant at room temperature.
Lead, Mercury, and Cadmium Exposure in the Korean General Population

<P><B>Background</B></P><P>Lead (Pb), mercury (Hg), and cadmium (Cd) are well-known environmental pollutants. They are unnecessary in the biological processes of humans. This study was performed to estimate the representative background exposure levels to the metals by measuring concentrations in whole blood of the Korean general population.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>This population-based cross-sectional study included 4,000 subjects (1,886 males and 2,114 females) 0–83 years of age in 2010 and 2011. Adult subjects (≥ 19 years of age) were collected by sex- and age-stratified probability method, and preschool- and school-aged subjects were recruited by a cluster sampling method. Written consent was provided prior to blood sampling. Pb and Cd blood concentrations were determined by a flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and blood Hg was analyzed by a direct Hg analyzer.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>The geometric mean, median and 95th percentile of blood Pb was 1.82 µg/dL, 1.83 µg/dL, and 3.78 µg/dL, respectively. The respective values were 2.92 µg/L, 2.87 µg/L, 9.12 µg/L for Hg, and 0.56 µg/L, 0.59 µg/L, 2.20 µg/L for Cd. Blood Pb and Hg were higher in males than in females, but no sex difference was observed, respectively, in subjects 0–4 years of age for Pb and in subjects less than 20 years for Hg. However, blood Cd was higher in females than in males and no sex difference was observed in subjects < 30 years of age.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>This study provides representative data of human exposure to Pb, Hg, and Cd covering whole age groups of the general population in Korea.</P>

<P>Femtosecond time-resolved signals often display oscillations arising from the nuclear and electronic wave packet motions. Fourier power spectrum is generally used to retrieve the frequency spectrum. We have shown by numerical simulations and coherent phonon spectrum of single walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) that the Fourier power spectrum may not be appropriate to obtain the spectrum, when the peaks overlap with varying phases. Linear prediction singular value decomposition (LPSVD) can be a good alternative for this case. We present a robust way to perform LPSVD analysis and demonstrate the method for the chirality assignment of SWCNT through the time-domain coherent phonon spectroscopy.</P>
