        Non-epitheliotropic Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma in a cat: a case report

        Cutaneous lymphoma is rare in cats. An 11-year-old spayed female Persian cat presented with crust, ulceration, and multiple nodules on the shoulder and forelimb for 2 months. Computed tomography revealed a diffuse, irregularly margined lesion in the dorsal cutis extending from cervical to thoracic vertebrae. Cytological evaluation predominantly revealed large round cells with multilobulated nuclei and basophilic cytoplasm. Histopathological examination confirmed round CD3+/PAX5-cells packed in the dermis. Thus, the diagnosis of non-epitheliotropic cutaneous lymphoma with a diffuse large T-cell type was made. The disease progressed rapidly for the next 2 weeks, and the owner elected humane euthanasia.

        Peptoniphilus mikwangii sp. nov., Isolated from a Clinical Specimen of Human Origin

        <P>A novel Gram-positive, anaerobic, and coccus-shaped bacterium, designated as strain ChDC B134(T), was isolated from a human postoperative infectious lesion in the right maxilla between the lateral incisor and canine and was characterized by polyphasic taxonomic analysis. 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that the strain ChDC B134(T) belonged to the genus Peptoniphilus, as it showed sequence similarities to Peptoniphilus indolicus KCTC 15023(T) (94.0 %) and Peptoniphilus asaccharolyticus KCTC 3321(T) (93.8 %). The prevalent fatty acids of of strain ChDC B134(T) were C16:0 (20.3 %), C18:1 cis 9 (34.3 %), and C18:0 (13.2 %). The DNA G+C content was 30.9 mol%. The cell wall diamino acid was D-ornithine, which is a property shared by other reference type strains of the genus Peptoniphilus. Based on the results of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic, and phylogenetic analysis, strain ChDC B134(T) (=KCOM 1628(T) = KCTC 15227(T) = JCM 30223(T)) should be classified as the type strain of a novel species of genus Peptoniphilus, for which the name Peptoniphilus mikwangii sp. nov. is proposed.</P>

        Fusobacterium hwasookii sp. nov., Isolated from a Human Periodontitis Lesion

        <P>In this study, we classified the five strains (ChDC F128(T), ChDC F145, ChDC F174, ChDC F206, and ChDC F300) as a novel species of genus Fusobacterium by DNA-DNA hybridization and multi-locus phylogenetic analysis (MLPA), based on a single sequence (24,715 bp) of 22 concatenated housekeeping genes, with morphological and chemotaxonomic characteristics. DNA-DNA hybridization data showed that the values of genomic relatedness between ChDC F128(T) and each of the other novel strains were ranged from 79.0 to 82.6 %, while those of genomic relatedness between ChDC F128(T) and type strain of each of subspecies of F. nucleatum or Fusobacterium periodonticum were ranged from 40.9 to 54.4 %. MLPA revealed that the 5 strains were clustered as one group and clearly discriminated with F. nucleatum and F. periodonticum with 100 % bootstrap value. The DNA G+C content of the five novel strains were ranged from 26.9 to 27.0 mol%. The cellular fatty acid analysis of clinical isolates and type strains revealed C14:0, C16:0, and cis-9 C16:1 as the major fatty acids. The cell wall peptidoglycan of the 5 strains was comprised of meso-lanthionine. These results show that the 5 strains are novel species and belong to the genus Fusobacterium. Strain ChDC F128(T) (=KCOM 1249(T) = KCTC 5108(T) = JCM 30218(T)) is suggested to be the type strain of a novel species of genus Fusobacterium, for which the name Fusobacterium hwasookii sp. nov. is proposed.</P>

        The inherent properties of nanosized silica (sil), such as high biocompatibility, chemical and colloidal stability, and easy surface modification, have provided silica materials with a tremendous potential in biomedical applications. In this study, the biocomposites consisting of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and Sil fabricated by a melt-plotting/coating process can be applied as a potential scaffold for bone tissue regeneration. The pore size and strut diameter of the multi-layered biocomposites were fixed at approximately 300㎛ and 300㎛, respectively, and the morphology, hydrophilic properties, water-absorption, and mechanical strength of various compositions (1.8, 4.8, 9.4wt% of sil) in the composites were evaluated. Through the water-contact angle and water-absorption, the bio-composites displayed dramatically increased hydrophilic properties, and highly roughened surface compared to the pure PCL scaffold. The in vitro biocompatibilities (cell proliferation and mineralization) of the bio-composites wereexamined using pre-osteoblasts (MC3T3E1). Based on scanning electron microscope images, the cells were more easily adhered and grown on the surface of the bio-composites, showing enhanced mineral deposition compared to the pure PCL scaffold after 14 days of cell culture. These results were because the coated sil component in the bio-composites could induce the osteogensis of the composites. Based on the physical and biological activities, we believe that the biocomposite will be a potential biomaterial for enhancing bone tissue regeneration.

        Adverse events of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine in Korean children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years

        Objectives: This study aimed to identify potential safety signals and adverse events following the primary Pfizer-BioNTech coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination series among children and adolescents aged 5 to 17 years in the Republic of Korea.Methods: Adverse events reported through the COVID-19 vaccination management system (CVMS, a web-based passive vaccine safety surveillance system) and adverse events and health conditions collected from a text message-based survey were analyzed.Results: A total of 14,786 adverse events among 5- to 17-year-old children and adolescents were reported in the CVMS; 14,334 (96.9%) were non-serious and 452 (3.1%) were serious, including 125 suspected cases of acute cardiovascular injury and 101 suspected cases of anaphylaxis. The overall reporting rate was lower in 5- to 11-year-old children (64.5 per 100,000 doses) than in 12- to 17-year-old adolescents (300.5 per 100,000 doses). The text message survey identified that local and systemic adverse events after either dose were reported less frequently in 5- to 11-year-old children than in 12- to 17-year-old adolescents (p<0.001). The most commonly reported adverse events were pain at the injection site, myalgia, headache, and fatigue/tiredness.Conclusion: The overall results are consistent with the results of controlled trials; serious adverse events were extremely rare among 5- to 17-year-old children and adolescents following Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccination. Adverse events were less frequent in children aged 5 to 11 years than in adolescents aged 12 to 17 years.

      • Proposal for the Composition of the Waste Profile (Draft) for Large Package of Decommissioning Waste

        The decommissioning waste generated during the dismantling of a nuclear power plant has various types and radioactivity levels and is characterized by being generated in a large amount in a short time. For the safe and efficient management of decommissioning waste with these characteristics, the Korea Radioactive waste Agency (KORAD) is developing a large container for decommissioning waste. And the Waste Certification Program (WCP) requirement was developed for the development of a Waste certification program for nuclear power plant operators that can prove whether the transfer/ acceptance criteria are satisfied at the step of generation of decommissioning waste packages. The radioactive waste profile, which is a waste quality certification document required by the WCP requirements, allows the KORAD to confirm that the disposition suitability evaluation was performed for each process of decommissioning waste and radiological characteristic data were evaluated appropriately. Therefore in this study, in order to propose a draft of a radioactive waste profile for large packages of decommissioning waste, overseas cases and the draft radioactive waste profile of the WCP requirements was analyzed. In addition, it was attempted to increase the utility of the derived waste profile by clearly suggesting the treatment methods for each waste stream considering the physical and radioactive characteristics evaluation methods of large decommissioning waste packages. The proposed large decommissioning waste profile can be used in the future development of a nuclear power plant operator’s decommissioning waste certification program, as well as KORAD’s a disposal facility safety evaluation and improvement of the waste tracking management system (WTS).

        슬로라이프를 기반으로 한 식생활교육 프로그램의 개발과 효과성 검증

        The aim of this study was to develop a Dietary Education Program focused on Slow Life (DEPSL) and verified its effectiveness in elementary school children using the extended Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB). The DEPSL was developed effectively according to the systematic program development model, ADDIE. The developed DEPSL was applied to the Education group (EDU), which was total of 130 students aged 12-13 in an elementary school by trained instructors for five weeks. The control group (CON) composed of 100 students of the same age was not given any dietary education. Pre- and post- questionnaires were collected from the students in both groups to compare the change in students’ dietary life during educational intervention between EDU and CON. EDU showed significant positive effects in all extended TPB variables (p< .01), but CON showed a significant difference only in the ‘knowledge’ and ‘behavior intention’ (p< .05). In addition, the extended TPB model verified its conformity to determine if the effect of education leads to a change in the children’s behavior. In conclusion, the DEPSL has a positive impacts on dietary life in school children. Nevertheless, further research will be needed to develop various and specialized dietary education programs with different level of grades in other school areas.

        이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활을 위한 실천적 문제 중심 교수·학습 과정안 개발 및 적용

        이 연구는 중학교 기술·가정 교과의 주생활 영역 '주거와 거주환경' 단원의 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활을 위한 실천적 문제 중심 가정과 교수·학습 과정안을 개발하여 적용하는데 목적을 두고 있다. 개발은 ADDIE단계에 따라 2009 개정 교육과정과 2015 개정 교육과정, 2009 개정 교육과정에 의한 교과서의 주생활 단원을 분석하고 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활과 실천적 문제 중심 수업 관련 문헌을 고찰하여 총괄 학습목표와 성취기준, 실천적 문제와 3차시분의 학습주제(더불어 살아가는 주생활의 중요성, 이웃공동체 활동과 지역사회 공동체, 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활가치관)를 선정하였다. 차시별로 실천적 문제 중심 수업 방법을 적용한 교수·학습 과정안과 학습자료(학습 활동지 7개와 읽기 자료 3개, 과제지 1개, 교사용 자료 3개, PPT자료 3세트, 동영상 6개), 설문지를 개발하여, 2017년 9월 한 달 간 서울시 구로구 소재 C중학교 1학년 전체 8학급 남녀학생 204명을 대상으로 연구자가 직접 수업에 적용하고, 185명의 학생 평가 결과를 분석하였다. 학생들은 대부분 평소 이웃들에게 관심을 가지고 교류를 이어가고 있었으나 적극적으로 활동을 찾아보려는 노력은 하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 수업 전반에 관한 평가에서 수업 활동과 수업 자료들이 수업 내용을 이해하는 데 도움이 되었다고 답했으며 수업의 내용이 자신들의 삶과 동네에 도움이 되는 것이라 응답하였고 다른 학교에서도 이러한 내용의 수업이 이루어지기를 바랐다. 각 차시별 수업 내용은 더불어 살아가는 것의 중요성에 대해 알고 이웃공동체 활동과 지역사회 공동체에 대해 탐색하며 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활가치관을 함양하는 것으로 평소 이웃과의 관계에서 자신의 행동을 되돌아보고 자신의 행동이 나와 가족, 이웃과 사회에 미치는 영향을 고려할 수 있도록 하였다고 평가하였다. 특히 이웃들이 주생활 속에서 겪는 어려움에 대해 관심을 가지고 적극적으로 이를 해결하기 위해 서로 도우며 이웃공동체 활동에 참여하고 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활 실천의식을 가지고 이웃과 더불어 살아가는 주생활가치관을 함양하는데 도움이 된 것으로 평가하였다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 이 실천적 문제 중심 교수·학습 과정안은 총괄 학습목표와 실천적 문제, 각 차시별 학습 주제와 2009 개정 교육과정 및 2015 개정 교육과정의 주생활 영역 성취기준을 달성하는데 적절하며 2015 개정 교육과정의 관계형성능력을 함양하는 데 활용될 것으로 기대한다. The purpose of this study was to develop and apply the practical problem-based teaching·learning process plan for 'interacting with neighbors' of home economics subject. The plan consisting of 3 lessons has been developed and implemented according to the ADDIE model. Various activity materials (7 student's activity sheets, 3 reading texts, 1 homework sheet, 3 sets of ppt, 6 videos, and 3 teacher's reading texts) as well as questionnaire were developed for the 3-session lessons. The plans were implemented by the researcher to 204 freshmen, 8 classes, of C middle school in Seoul during september, 2017. The result, of students' lower level of actual participation in interacting with neighbors comparing to their interests in, supported the need of this study. Students were satisfied with the whole 3-lessons in the aspects such as beneficial usage of the contents in their daily life and in building the sense of community, as well as adequacy of materials and activities. Students also reported that they would highly aware to the importance of interacting with neighbors and to practice the contents learned from the lessons in daily life at community. They had an opportunity to reflect one's own attitude to neighbors and recommended to teach it to other schools, too. It can be concluded that the teaching·learning process plan for 'interacting with neighbors' would raise students' housing values living together and attain the overall objective and achievement standards of 2015 home economics middle school curriculum.
