Effect of Ovarian Extract on Oocyte Maturation and Early Embryonic Development in Pigs

Various factors in the ovary are known to regulate oocyte maturation and hormone secretory functions; however, the effect of ovarian extract (OE) on oocyte maturation and embryonic development in pigs remains unknown. In this study, we first evaluated whether OE supplementation in the in vitro maturation (IVM) medium alters the oocyte maturation capacity by affecting glucose/amino acid metabolites, meiotic maturation, cumulus cell (CC) expansion, and antioxidants. Various OE concentrations (50, 100, 200, 500, and 5000 μg/mL) were included in the IVM medium. Only the oocytes treated with 100 μg/mL OE exhibited an improved meiotic maturation rate when compared with that of the other groups (non-treated group, 78.6 ± 3.0% vs. 100 μg/mL OE-treated group, 81.6 ± 4.3%); however, the difference was not significant. To observe the changes in glucose and amino acid metabolism in the OE-treated oocytes, we measured the amounts of diverse constituents (glucose, lactate, glutamine, and ammonia) in the IVM medium containing OE. Lactate and ammonia levels in the OE-treated group after 44 h of IVM were higher (p < 0.01) than those in the non-treated group. In addition, the expression of the CC expansion factors (Has2 and Tnfaip6) significantly increased (p < 0.05), whereas the mRNA expression levels of antioxidative enzymes (Sod1, Cat, and Gpx1) significantly diminished (p < 0.05) in the OE-treated group. Moreover, mature oocytes treated with 100 μg/mL OE demonstrated increased subsequent embryonic development rates after 144 h of IVM. Thus, the addition of OE in IVM mediums may improve oocyte maturation capacity which could enhance antioxidative enzyme activation, energy metabolism, and expression of the CC expansion factors in porcine oocytes.

Objective:?Sarcopenia, the progressive decrease of skeletal muscle mass and function, is related to functional impairment in the elderly. Muscle mass, mainly composed of appendicular lean mass (ALM), is known to be a heritable trait. Sarcopenia has been a subject of increasing genetic research. However, genetic risk factors in Asian were not thoroughly evaluated. The aim of this study is to identify genetic variants associated with sarcopenia defined by the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health in Korean adults over 65 years old.?Methods:?A total of 1,290 individuals from Ansung cohort was investigated. Sarcopenia was defined as the lowest quantile of ALM adjusted for body mass index (BMI) of the population studied and 254 participants met this criteria. Affymetrix Genome-Wide Human Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) Array 5.0 was used for genotyping and 308,945 SNP markers passed quality control filter. We performed logistic regression analysis including sex, age and BMI as covariates. Arbitrarily defined?P?value threshold of less than 0.00001 was used for suggestive evidence of association.?Results:?None of the SNP markers passed genome-wide significance threshold of?P?<5×10-8. A variant in SORCS2?(rs6834325), was most significantly associated with sarcopenia in elderly Koreans (odds ratio 0.58, 95% confidence interval=[0.46, 0.72],?P?= 1.50×10-6). Eight other variants had suggestive association and were considered to be functionally relevant to sarcopenia; seven of those including rs2329489 in/near?GRB10?with odds ratio ranging from 1.57 to 1.62 and?P?from 8.49×10-5?to 3.82×10-5, and rs16958069 (0.64, 3.99×10-5) in?RYR3. Among known candidate genes, several variants in?GREM1,?ST18,?MMP?and?INSR?showed nominal significance of?P?<0.05.?Conclusions:?We have identified nine suggestive genetic loci associated with sarcopenia in elderly Korean. As we had limited statistical power due to small sample size, further replication study is required to validate our findings.

<P>Conclusions: Compared with amlodipine, fimasartan increased late-phase glucose-stimulated insulin secretion in patients with type 2 diabetes and hypertension. This finding suggests that ARBs would be more beneficial in such patients compared with other classes of anti-hypertensives.</P>
Young-onset type 2 diabetes in South Korea: a review of the current status and unmet need

The prevalence of young-onset (diagnosis at age < 40 years) type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is increasing globally. Young-onset T2DM has a common pathophysiology of glucose dysregulation as in late-onset T2DM. However, it presents a greater association with obesity and a more rapid decline in β-cell function than late-onset T2DM. Accumulating evidence indicates that disease progression in young-onset T2DM is rapid, resulting in early and frequent development of microvascular and macrovascular complications, as well as premature death. Improper management and low adherence to medical therapy are important issues in young-onset T2DM. This review discusses the epidemiology, disease entity, and clinical issues associated with young-onset T2DM. We also present the prevalence and clinical characteristics of patients with young-onset T2DM in South Korea.

This study researches a combined form ending of prefinal ending -eossand adnominal ending -ul. In respect to this combination form ending, -eoss- presents a meaning of past as a absoulte tense. -ul presents a meaning of speculation and add an adnominal function to a clause. In this study, by analyzing corpus and research meaning of -eoss- and -ul, the combined form -eossul has fixed meaning. Therefore, finally, the combined form ending -eossul is able to be dicussed as a compound ending.

Background: Education for understanding the disease itself is important in the management of asthma. Objective: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of the repeated education for the asthmatic children through various games. Method: A 15 school-aged children with mild-to-moderate asthma who participated in the Soonchunhyang asthma camp were enrolled. We compared each score of the test which consisted of 4 components of asthma (triggers, preventions, treatments and courses). The first test was performed without any education. Thereafter, the second, third and fourth tests were conducted repeatedly with various games. Result: The average score of the first test was 11.93±5.20. Meanwhile, the scores of the repeated tests showed gradual improvement; the scores of the second, third and fourth tests were 15.64±4.77, 18.06±2.96 and 18.6±2.47. The score of the second test showed improvement as compared to that of the first test (P<0.01). The score of the third test compared also showed improvement as compared to the second test (P=0.03). Conclusion: The interesting games as a tool for the education of asthma could be helpful in not only understanding the disease itself but also improving the compliance of patients. Effect of Heat Treatment Condition on Quality Characteristics of Croceine Croaker Gulbi

In a previous study, we selected salting and drying conditions using fermented product (mixed soybean and anchovy) to develop croceine croaker Gulbi with high quality. This study was carried out to analyze the quality characteristics of croceine croaker Gulbi according to heat treatment conditions. The quality characteristics of croceine croaker Gulbi by steam (100℃, 10 min) and oven (150℃, 10 min) treatment were compared. The croceine croaker Gulbi treated with steam condition showed lower histamine, VBN, and TBARS and higher antioxidant activity and overall acceptability than oven treated Gulbi. We further investigated the effect of steaming time (8, 10, 12, 15 min) on quality characteristics of croceine croaker Gulbi. Total nitrogen and amino-type nitrogen contents increased with increasing steaming time. Histamine, acid value, VBN, TBARS, and antioxidant activity were no significant difference in the steaming treatment for more than 10 min. In the sensory evaluation, the highest overall acceptability was observed in the steam treated croceine croaker Gulbi for 10 min. This work was supported by the Jeollannam-do.
Ultrathin metamaterial-based perfect absorbers for VHF and THz bands

An ultrathin and angularly stable metamaterial perfect absorber (MPA) is demonstrated for VHF-band using four connected split-square resonators structure and low-cost fabrication process. The total incoming energy of electromagnetic wave (at 250 MHz) is consumed inside the efficient thickness, which is 240 times smaller than the absorption wavelength of MPA. Our MPA works well for a very wide range of incident angle up to 45 of electromagnetic wave and exhibits the polarization-independent behavior. Furthermore, by scaling the initial design and integrating a ferroelectric material (strontium titanate), a thermo-tunable ultrathin MPA is realized in the THz region. At room temperature (300 K), the thickness of THz MPA reaches roundly 1/300 of the working wavelength. In addition, a fractional frequency shift of 49% at the absorption over 90% can be controlled in the varied temperature range from 150 to 400 K. Our results presents good candidates for potential devices operating from the radio to the THz range.
