Enhancing Social Support for Migrant Families: A Case Study of Community Services in a Shanghai Urban Village and Implications for Intervention

Ya Wen,Jill Hanley 한국사회복지학회 2016 Asian Social Work and Policy Review Vol.10 No.1

Recent years have witnessed the growing emphasis of the Chinese central government to develop community services as a method of building communities and strengthening social solidarity. With the increased involvement of multi-generation households in China’s internal rural-to-urban migration, however, little is known about what community services are available for migrant families. Nor do we know much about how such services can enhance social support for migrants, which is crucial for their psychological well-being in managing the ongoing challenges that arise from migration and further integration into cities. This article presents a case study conducted in Shanghai where social services are emerging in a few urban villages. We begin with a brief background on China’s rural-to-urban migration and the emergence of urban villages, followed by a discussion of community services and social support for Chinese migrant families. We then document existing services in an urban village to explore how they can influence migrant families’ social support. Drawing on the perspective of service providers, we highlight the effects social work interventions can have on improving social support for migrant families. Finally, we propose an intervention framework based on multidimensions of social support, emphasizing an integration of formal and informal social support through community services for migrant populations.

        Pulsed-laser-diode Intermittently Pumped 2-μm Acousto-optic Q-switched Tm:LuAG Laser

        Ya Wen,Yan Jiang,Hao Zheng,Hongliang Zhang,Chao Wang,Chunting Wu,Guangyong Jin 한국광학회 2020 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.4 No.3

The heat distribution in crystals in a 2-µm acousto-optic Q-switched Tm:LuAG laser pumped by pulsed-laser-diode (pulsed-LD) intermittent-pumping technology was analyzed using COMSOL software. The thermal lensing effect of the Tm:LuAG crystal can be mitigated by pulsed-LD intermittent-pumping techniques. An experimental setup using this kind of approach achieved maximum output energy of 8.31 mJ, minimum pulse width of 101.9 ns, and highest peak power of 81.55 kW, reached at a Q-switched repetition rate of 200 Hz. It offers significant improvement of performance of the output laser beam, compared to pulsed-LD double-ended pumping technology at the same repetition rate.

Antibacterial and Antioxidant Composite Fiber Prepared from Polyurethane and Polyacrylonitrile Containing Tea Polyphenols

        Ya Wen,Ruifang Zhao,Xueqian Yin,Yidong Shi,Haojun Fan,Yi Zhou,Lin Tang 한국섬유공학회 2020 Fibers and polymers Vol.21 No.1

Antibacterial and antioxidant properties exert an indispensable effect on biomedical and packaging materialswhich are mainly made of fiber-based fabrics. The current research illustrates a novel type of composite fiber which wasprepared from thermoplastic polyurethane (PU), polyacrylonitrile (PAN) and tea polyphenols (TP) through wet-spinningtechnology. The PU-PAN mass ratio was optimized upon the mechanical property; TP was incorporated into the compositefiber with different contents. The obtained fibers were fully characterized in terms of mechanical, thermal, morphologicalproperties as well as surface wettability. Additionally, in vitro TP release, antioxidant and antibacterial activity of suchcomposite fibers before and after washing were under investigation systematically and orderly. The findings showed that TPloadedcomposite fibers with an average diameter around 120 μm performed a sustained TP release behavior and desirablecytocompatibility. According to the capacity on scavenging 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radicals, theobservation of scavenging ratio reaching to 97 % proved the excellent antioxidant performance. Furthermore, the idealantibacterial activity against Gram-negative E. coli and Gram-positive S. aureus was also demonstrated. Collectively, thisstudy provides a facile strategy to design and prepare a novel type of composite fibers and fabrics, which may be put intoapplication as wound dressing and tissue conduit.

      • Credit Risk Measurement Study of Commercial Banks Based on the Innovation Discrete Hopfield Neural Network Model

Yawen Zhao,Yongmei Sun 한국무역연구원 2021 The International Academy of Global Business and T Vol.17 No.2

Purpose – Credit risk is always the major risk in the banking industry, and the main target of regulatory authorities. Based on modern financial theory and new credit instruments, modern risk measurement models have played a great role in the measurement of credit risk. However, most of these models assume normal distribution, which will lead to a deviation between the analysis results and the actual distribution of credit risk, c ause the “ thick tail” phenomenon, a nd reduce the accuracy of measurement results. In this context, the development of modern information technology makes it possible to introduce artificial intelligence technology into credit risk measurement, s uch as an artificial neural network, d ecision tree, g enetic programming, and support vector machine. Design/Methodology/Approach – Firstly, we use the commonly used an expert survey method and the research results and experience of previous scholars for reference to realize the transformation of regulatory indicators f rom qualitative t o quantitative. T hen, a c redit r isk measurement model based on t he Hopfield network was constructed in order to evaluate credit risk. Finally, the simulation experiment was carried out using real data from a commercial bank. Findings – The results show that a credit risk measurement model based on Hopfield neural network can accurately reflect the credit risk state of banking institutions. This shows that the credit risk measurement model proposed in this paper not only has the function of supporting decision-making for commercial bank managers, it is also an effective way for financial regulators to grasp the risk change trend in time. Research Implications – A credit risk measurement model of commercial banks based on a discrete Hopfield neural network is proposed. Because an artificial neural network has the advantages of strong “robustness”, high prediction accuracy, and is unstructured, this paper uses the associative memory function of DHNN to construct a credit risk measurement model based on a discrete Hopfield neural network. Simulation results show that the model can accurately reflect the credit risk status of banks.

        Morphology-controllable 3D flower-like TiO2 for UV shielding application

        Yawen Wanga,Zunli Mo,Chun Zhang,Ping Zhang,Ruibin Guo,Hao Gou,Rere Hu,Xiaojiao Wei 한국공업화학회 2015 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.32 No.-

Calliandra like rutile TiO2 hierarchical microspheres with different diameters were successfully preparedby hydrothermal method via altering reaction time. All these as synthesized unique hierarchicalmicrospheres displayed higher UV shielding capability compared with commercial P25 and anataseTiO2. Noticeably, the UV shielding efficiency of these microspheres had a close relation to their diametersand packing density of constituted nanorods. The S-24h-C sample exhibited the highest UV shieldingefficiency, which could not only block all UV light below 400 nm but also show poor photocatalyticactivity under UV light radiation, indicating its great applied potential in UV-blocking materials.

Effects of dietary Acremonium terricola culture supplementation on the quality, conventional characteristics, and flavor substances of Hortobágy goose meat

        Yawen Guo,Jinyuan Chen,Shuyu Liu,Yali Zhu,Pengfei Gao,Kaizhou Xie 한국축산학회 2022 한국축산학회지 Vol.64 No.5

This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary supplementation with Acremonium terricolaculture (ATC) on the quality, conventional characteristics, and flavor substances of Hortobágygoose meat. A total of 720 one-day-old goslings were divided into four dietary treatments, eachconsisting of six cages of 30 goslings. The dietary conditions consisted of the control group andthree treatment groups supplemented with 3, 5, or 7 g/kg ATC. In male geese, supplementationwith 3 g/kg ATC elevated the crude ash (CA) content of the thigh muscle compared to the controlgroup, and the CA content of the pectoralis major was significantly elevated when geesewere supplemented with 5 g/kg ATC (p < 0.05). In females, compared with the control group, supplementation with 7 g/kg ATC enhanced the crude protein (CP) content of the pectoralismajor. Supplementation with 7 g/kg ATC also increased the crude fat (CF) content of the pectoralismajor in females as well as in both sexes; moreover, this supplementation dose increasedthe inosinic acid content of the thigh muscle in males and in both sexes. In contrast, supplementationwith 5 g/kg ATC decreased the pH of the thigh muscle at 12 h postmortem (p < 0.01). No significant changes in meat color, water loss rate, shear force, moisture content or aminoacid (AA) levels were observed after ATC supplementation (p > 0.05). Levels of saturated fattyacids (SFAs) and polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) in the pectoralis major and levels of SFAs,monounsaturated FAs (MUFAs), and PUFAs in the thigh muscle were not affected by the supplementation. Overall, ATC supplementation had positive effects on the pH, and CA, CP, CF,inosinic acid contents as well as on the FA composition of gosling meat. The optimal level ofATC supplementation was 7 g/kg in goslings from 1 to 70 days of age.

Cultural impacts of state interventions: Traditional craftsmanship in China’s porcelain capital in the mid to late 20th century

Yawen Xu,Yu Tao 국립민속박물관 2022 International Journal of Intangible Heritage Vol.17 No.-

Craft production is essential in maintaining community cohesion and traditional craft knowledge, skills and techniques. In response to the decline of traditional craftsmanship, owing to industrialisation and modernisation, a global discussion on intangible cultural heritage (ICH) arose in the early 1990s. Exploring the roles of different stakeholders, including the state, in sustainably safeguarding ICH has become an increasingly important research topic in contemporary heritage studies. This paper assesses the cultural impact of China’s state interventions on traditional craftsmanship by analysing the state’s role in Jingdezhen’s porcelain manufacturing in the mid- to late 20th century. An analytical framework is developed based on six essential attributes of traditional craftsmanship. This paper then applies this framework to comprehensively assess how Jingdezhen’s state-led porcelain production practice affected various aspects of traditional craftsmanship. The empirical evidence presented in this paper reveals some of the state interventions’ adverse effects on the inherence and development of traditional craftsmanship. In general, the state interventions lowered the involvement of artistic elements in the production and consumption of porcelain crafts, hindered the market’s role in signalling customers’ preferences to producers and terminated the dispersed production in traditional private workshops. However, state interventions, by and large, facilitated the diffusion of crafting skills and had mixed impacts on workers’ agency as well as the transmission and development of accumulative and systematic knowledge in traditional craftsmanship.

Firm size affecting efficiency of production and commercialization of knowledge: embedded in cluster development

        Li Yawen,Zhong Zhou,Guan Jiancheng,Zhou Jinyi,Li Jizhen 기술경영경제학회 2020 ASIAN JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION Vol.28 No.1

This study examines the impact of platform innovation on the efficiency of firms located in different clusters. The sample contains data for 1,257 firms from 2005 to 2015 in Beijing’s Zhongguancun Science Park, which is known as China’s ‘Silicon Valley’. Using the DEA model to gauge the efficiency of each firm over time, we found that firm size has a significantly negative correlation with knowledge production efficiency, a significantly positive correlation with its knowledge commercialisation efficiency, and an inverted-U shaped relationship with overall efficiency. We then explored the mediating effect of firm size on the relationship between the characteristics of clusters and firm efficiency, before concluding with both managerial and academic implications.

      • Dimethyl-sulfoxide-assisted improvement in the crystallization of lead-acetate-based perovskites for high-performance solar cells

Liu, Yawen,Liu, Zhihai,Lee, Eun-Cheol The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Journal of materials chemistry. C, Materials for o Vol.6 No.25

<P>Organolead trihalide perovskite materials have attracted considerable interest for their successful application as light absorbers in efficient photovoltaic cells. Several lead sources have been used for the preparation of perovskites, among which lead acetate (Pb(Ac)2) is an important candidate. However, simply mixing Pb(Ac)2 and methylamine iodide in <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>-dimethylformamide solvent leads to poor perovskite morphology, which is disadvantageous for the device performance. Herein, we used dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) as a solvent additive to improve the quality of Pb(Ac)2-based perovskite films. We observed that using 5.0% DMSO could significantly enhance the crystallinity of the perovskite film with enlarged domain size. Consequently, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the relevant perovskite solar cells (PSCs) was drastically enhanced from 12.88 to 16.59% (on average), with simultaneous improvement in the open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current density, and fill factor. A champion PCE of 17.06% with negligible hysteresis was achieved for PSCs prepared using 5.0% DMSO as the solvent additive. Our results indicate that using DMSO for the preparation of a Pb(Ac)2-based perovskite film is an effective way to fabricate high-performance PSCs.</P>

(Background and Purpose) For improving cultural, artistic and core competitiveness of cities, public art projects have recently been introduced in the field of urban construction such as urban regeneration. In the process of creating public art, local and humanistic nature of public art creation has declined due to insufficient participation of residents. In this context, China has gradually begun to pay attention to participation of residents in the process of creating public art. Therefore, this paper aims to study importance of elements of resident participation in the process of creating public art in China by stage, draw insights, and suggest directions for improvement. (Method) The research methodology of this paper is, first, to derive definition of public art and types of resident participation through theoretical examination. Second, based on AHP analysis, it analyzed process of public art completion in China and derived elements of residents' participation. Thirdly, based on stages of completion process of public art in China, a hierarchical model was created using the types and elements of residents' participation, and an evaluation was made through an expert questionnaire to complete AHP analysis to derive the importance of elements of residents' participation in each stage of the composition process of public art. Fourth, the results were analyzed objectively and improvement directions were proposed. (Results) Hierarchical model of AHP analysis consisted of 4 upper items and 18 lower items. In plan development phase, scheme design phase, and construction phase, the importance of the upper project, that was, the type of participation, was in the order of guidance, education, cooperation, and information. In management and maintenance stage, the importance of the types of participation was ranked as cooperative, guiding, educating, and informing, in that order. Lower-level items, i.e., elements of resident participation, were ranked in importance according to the constituent stages of public art in China. (Conclusions) It was clear from analysis of the importance of participation types and participation factors that the importance of guided participation was higher. Moreover, the importance of professional guidance from a third party was highest in the first three stages of guided participation. In educational engagement, third parties translate expertise and technology into information that residents could easily understand and third parties provide expertise and technology were of high importance. The importance of sponsor recognition of residents' decision-making power in cooperative participation was high. The most important aspects of informed participation were disclosure of information by the initiator and polling by a third party. During usage and maintenance phase, collaborative participation was ranked high, and work is dialogic was ranked high in guided participation.
