        Foreign Banks’ Entry and Local Banks’ Strategies in China

        The opening of the Chinese banking sector encourages the entry of foreign banks through greenfield investment or cooperation with local banks. The entry strategies of foreign banks are therefore influenced by the strategies of local banks. This paper examines the interaction between local and foreign banks. The results demonstrate that the superior capabilities of foreign banks to liquidate collateral facilitate their greenfield investment. Otherwise, foreign banks will cooperate with local banks, whose cooperation depends on local banks’ self-development capability. Our results suggest that foreign banks are more likely to cooperate with large local banks in China unless small local banks have greater self-development capabilities.

        Quasi-static compression of electric resistance welded mild steel tubes with axial gradient-distributed microstructures

        This paper presents the deformation behavior and crashworthiness of electric resistance welded mild steel tubes with axial gradient microstructures in quasi-static compression. Three sets of tubes were prepared, and regions of each tube were Induction heated and directly quenched (IH-DQ). The effect of the length to diameter (L/D) ratio, and length of the IH-DQ region on crushing characteristics was investigated, and compared with untreated tubes. The compression tests revealed that improved energy absorption can be obtained in IHDQ tubes if the collapse is controlled by the formation of a concertina buckling mode. However, there was a tendency to produce mixed or Euler buckling modes as the ratio of L/D increased. Meanwhile, the results of the crush experiments and the FEM models showed that the heat-treatment process should be precisely controlled to produce the correct type of microstructure, and circumferential uniformity of microstructure distribution.

        Piezo channels in the urinary system: Correspondence

        We read an informative review article by Li et al.1, titled “Piezo channels in the urinary system”. They report that mRNA expression of Piezo2 increased significantly in both human bladder cancer tissues and mouse bladder cancer tissues. They further found that Piezo2 only correlates with tumor stage. However, this conclusion was based on the results of only one experiment. I read the original study that the author cited in the review. The study found that Piezo2 mRNA was significantly increased in the pT2 tumor stage compared to the pT0 tumor stage, but with no significant difference between the pT2 tumor stage and pT1 tumor stage. Therefore, it is not accurate to state that Piezo2 correlates with tumor stage based on this single experiment. This review provides very little information about the role of Piezo2 in bladder cancer. Here, we would like to provide more comprehensive information regarding the role of Piezo2 in bladder cancer based on current studies and tumor datasets.

        Simulation-Based Optical Spectra Analyses and Synthesis of Highly Monodispersed Mn-Doped ZnSe Nanocrystal

        Geometrical structures of (ZnSe)n, n = 3x, (x = 1–4) and (MnxZn2xSe3x), (x = 1–4) clusters were calculated using density functional theory (DFT). Optical/absorption spectra, Raman spectra, HOMO–LUMO gap energy and binding energy of each cluster were calculated. The calculated results show the red shift of the optical/absorption spectra band caused by the manganese atoms doped in ZnSe clusters, and the highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (HOMO–LUMO) gap energy value is decreased. Furthermore, we realized highly monodispersed manganese-doped zinc selenide quantum dots (Mn:ZnSe d-dots) experimentally by using a convenient route. The as-synthesized Mn:ZnSe d-dots were characterized by UV-Vis absorption, photoluminescence (PL), X-ray diffraction (XRD), TEM and HRTEM. The experimental results revealed that the as-prepared Mn:ZnSe d-dots with zincblende structure have an average size of about 3.9 nm.

        Screening and Cloning of RAPD Markers from the W Chromosome of Silkworm, Bombyx mori L.

        Silkworms sex determination drew high attention from researchers. Sex chromosomes on the silkworm are of ZW type for females and ZZ type for males. Chromosome W plays an important role in sex determination. Although several molecular linkage maps have been constructed for silkworm, very few markers are discovered on the W chromosome. In order to look for molecular markers and to further locate the Fem gene on chromosome W, we used genomic DNA from both female and male larvae of a silkworm strain named 937 as PCR templates for RAPD amplification with 200 arbitrary 10-mer primers. The amplification results showed three female-specific bands, namely OPG-07496, OPC-151,660 and OPE-181,279. Further verification, however, revealed no band from OPG-07 and OPC-15 in either sex in the strain 798, but OPE-18 provided female-specific band in the strains Suluan7 and C108, and absent in both males and strain 798. This indicates that the bands from OPG-07496 and OPC-151,660 are probably female-specific in strain 937, and the band from OPE-18 was probably amplified from a common segment shared by most strains. The genomic DNAs from OPG-07 and OPC-15 were cloned and sequenced. Sequence analysis showed that the DNAs from OPG-07 and OPC-15 have high identities with the retrotransposable elements, and DNA from OPC-15 contains a portion of sequence which probably encodes an eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E binding protein (eIF4EBP).

        Scale Synthesis of Environment Friendly CIZS/ZnS Core/Shell Quantum Dots for High Color Quality White LEDs

        Environment-friendly CuInZnS (CIZS) core and CuInZnS/ZnS (CIZS/ZnS) core/shell quantum dots (QDs) were synthesized via a facile solution-phase method. Different methods certified that the ZnS shell was successfully coated on CIZS core. The coating of ZnS shell would lead to the quantum yield increase and optical spectra blue shifted. Furthermore, the CIZS and CIZS/ZnS had a long PL lifetime of 257.3 ns and 411.6 ns, respectively. Finally, the CIZS/ZnS QDs powder with yellow emission was used to compose white light emitting diodes (WLED) on blue LED chip. The WLED had a Ra of 80, Tc of 4793 K, and CIE coordinates of (0.346, 0.321) under 20 mA current, and had a bright warm white emission, which indicated the promising potential of the CIZS/ZnS QDs in the optoelectronics.

        Improving the charge transfer performance of Si nanomaterial through C surface modification: A first-principles study

        Models of oxidized Si (111) surface under different C coverage were established to study the charge transfer ability of Si nanomaterial from strategy of C surface modification using first-principles calculation. The calculated formation energies show that structures of C surface-modified oxidized Si (111) surface are stable. The electronic properties present that the interaction between C and Si atoms is mainly contributed by the hybridization of C-2p and Si-3p states. And the interaction between C and Si atoms increases firstly and then decreases with the increasing C coverage rate. The transfer charge between C and Si reaches a maximum when C coverage rate is 0.5. We speculate that the conductivity of experimentally prepared Si nanomaterial does not monotonously enhance with the increasing C concentration, which would reach a maximum at a certain C concentration, and then decreases.

        Association between perioperative glucocorticoids and cancer metastasis and survival in patients undergoing radical cystectomy for urothelial carcinoma of the bladder: A single-center retrospective study

        Purpose: Perioperative glucocorticoids have the potential to increase the risk of tumor metastasis. However, the relationship between perioperative glucocorticoids and oncologic outcomes remains controversial. The present study was undertaken to evaluate the association of perioperative glucocorticoids with clinicopathologic outcomes following radical cystectomy (RC). Materials and Methods: We screened and included 185 patients who underwent radical surgery for bladder cancer in our center between 2009 and 2018. The Kaplan–Meier method was applied, and a log-rank test was used to estimate differences in metastasis-free survival (MFS) and overall survival (OS) between the groups. Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to analyze any association of glucocorticoids with clinical outcomes. Results: A total of 76 (41.1%) patients received perioperative glucocorticoids. Median postoperative follow-up was 2.0 years. Kaplan–Meier survival curve indicated that the glucocorticoids group was significantly associated with increased distant MFS (p=0.008) but not with OS. In the multivariate analysis, no significant differences were observed for MFS between the groups. Interestingly, when the variable of blood transfusion was excluded from the multivariate analysis model, we found that patients receiving glucocorticoids were independently associated with worse MFS (hazard ratio, 1.790; p=0.030). Furthermore, the partial correlation analysis showed a significant positive correlation between perioperative glucocorticoids and blood transfusion (r=0.604, p<0.001). In the nontransfusion subgroup, propensity score matching showed that patients receiving glucocorticoids had a higher risk of distant metastasis. Conclusions: Perioperative glucocorticoids were associated with a higher rate of distant metastasis in patients undergoing RC for bladder cancer.

        piRNA-1742 promotes renal cell carcinoma malignancy by regulating USP8 stability through binding to hnRNPU and thereby inhibiting MUC12 ubiquitination

        Accumulating studies have confirmed that PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs) are considered epigenetic effectors in cancer. We performed piRNA microarray expression analysis on renal cell carcinoma (RCC) tumor tissues and paired normal tissues and performed a series of in vivo and in vitro experiments to explore piRNAs associated with RCC progression and investigate their functional mechanisms. We found that piR-1742 was highly expressed in RCC tumors and that patients with high piR-1742 expression had a poor prognosis. Inhibition of piR-1742 significantly reduced tumor growth in RCC xenograft and organoid models. Mechanistically, piRNA-1742 regulates the stability of USP8 mRNA by binding directly to hnRNPU, which acts as a deubiquitinating enzyme that inhibits the ubiquitination of MUC12 and promotes the development of malignant RCC. Subsequently, nanotherapeutic systems loaded with piRNA-1742 inhibitors were found to effectively inhibit the metastasis and growth of RCC in vivo. Therefore, this study highlights the functional importance of piRNA-related ubiquitination in RCC and demonstrates the development of a related nanotherapeutic system, possibly contributing to the development of therapeutic approaches for RCC.
