        LPL gene Pvu II polymorphism and hypertriglycer-idemia: a meta-analysis involving 1,640 subjects

        Background/Aims: Although lipoprotein lipase (LPL) gene Pvu II polymorphism has been associated with an increased risk of hypertriglyceridemia (HT), there is no clear consensus within the scientific community. Methods: A meta-analysis of 1,640 subjects from six individual studies was conducted to better elucidate the potential relationship between the LPL gene Pvu II polymorphism and HT within the Chinese population. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and their corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were evaluated by using fixed effect models. Results: Our analysis indicated a significant association between LPL gene Pvu II polymorphism and HT within the Chinese population under allelic (OR, 1.550; 95% CI, 1.320 to 1.830; p = 1.158 × 10<sup>-7</sup>), recessive (OR, 0.540; 95% CI, 0.390 to 0.750; p = 0.0002), dominant (OR, 1.889; 95% CI, 1.501 to 2.377; p = 5.960 × 10<sup>-8</sup>), homozygous (OR, 2.167; 95% CI, 1.531 to 3.067; p = 1.242 × 10<sup>-5</sup>), heterozygous (OR, 1.810; 95% CI, 1.419 to 2.309; p = 1.842 × 10<sup>-6</sup>), and additive genetic models (OR, 1.553; 95% CI, 1.320 to 1.828; p = 1.158 × 10<sup>-7</sup>). Conclusions: Because LPL gene Pvu II restriction fragment length polymorphism polymorphism was associated with an elevated risk of HT, the P+ allele carriers of the LPL gene might be predisposed to HT.

        p<sub>22</sub>phox C<sub>242</sub>T gene polymorphism and overt diabetic nephropathy: a meta-analysis of 1,452 participants

        Background/Aims: The p22phox C242T gene polymorphism (rs4673) may be linked to an increased susceptibility for overt diabetic nephropathy (ODN), but the study results are still inconclusive. Methods: To explore the relationship between p22phox C242T gene polymorphism and ODN, the current meta-analysis of 707 ODN patients and 745 controls from five individual studies was conducted. The pooled odds ratio (OR) and its corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) were evaluated by either a random or fixed effect model. Results: In our meta-analysis, a significant relationship between the p22phox C242T gene polymorphism and ODN was found under allelic (OR, 2.760; 95% CI, 1.400 to 5.450; p = 0.004), recessive (OR, 5.080; 95% CI, 1.020 to 25.430; p = 0.05), dominant (OR, 1.700; 95% CI, 1.167 to 2.477; p = 0.006), homozygous (OR, 3.900; 95% CI, 1.022 to 14.889; p = 0.046), heterozygous (OR, 1.523; 95% CI, 1.167 to 1.986; p = 0.002), and additive genetic models (OR, 2.019; 95% CI, 1.232 to 3.309; p = 0.005). Conclusions: A positive correlation between p22phox C242T gene polymorphism and ODN risk was found. The T allele carriers of p22phox C242T gene polymorphism might be predisposed to ODN.

        External Counterpulsation Reduces Beat-to-Beat Blood Pressure Variability When Augmenting Blood Pressure and Cerebral Blood Flow in Ischemic Stroke

        Background and PurposezzExternal counterpulsation (ECP) is a noninvasive method used to enhance cerebral perfusion by elevating the blood pressure in ischemic stroke. However, the response of the beat-to-beat blood pressure variability (BPV) in ischemic stroke patients during ECP remains unknown. MethodszzWe enrolled recent ischemic stroke patients and healthy controls. Changes in the blood fow velocities in bilateral middle cerebral arteries and the continuous beat-to-beat blood pressure before, during, and afer ECP were monitored. Power spectral analysis revealed that the BPV included oscillations at very low frequency (VLF; <0.04 Hz), low frequency (LF; 0.04– 0.15 Hz), and high frequency (HF; 0.15–0.40 Hz), and the total power spectral density (TP; <0.40 Hz) and LF/HF ratio were calculated. ResultszzWe found that ECP signifcantly increased the systolic and diastolic blood pressures in both stroke patients and controls. ECP decreased markedly the systolic and diastolic BPVs at VLF and LF and the TP, and the diastolic BPV at HF when compared with baseline. Te decreases in diastolic and systolic BPV reached 37.56% and 23.20%, respectively, at VLF, 21.15% and 12.19% at LF, 8.76% and 16.59% at HF, and 31.92% and 23.62% for the total TP in stroke patients, which did not difer from those in healthy controls. Te change in fow velocity on the contralateral side was positively correlated with the total TP systolic BPV change induced by ECP (r=0.312, p=0.035). ConclusionszzECP reduces the beat-to-beat BPV when increasing the blood pressure and cerebral blood fow velocity in ischemic stroke patients. ECP might be able to improve the clinical outcome by decreasing the beat-to-beat BPV in stroke patients, and this should be explored further in future studies.

      • Speciation and Sources of Brown Carbon in Precipitation at Seoul, Korea: Insights from Excitation–Emission Matrix Spectroscopy and Carbon Isotopic Analysis

        <P>Brown carbon (BrC) plays a significant role in the Earth's radiative balance, yet its sources and chemical composition remain poorly understood. In this work, we investigated BrC in the atmospheric environment of Seoul by characterizing dissolved organic matter in precipitation using excitation-emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC). The two independent fluorescent components identified by PARAFAC were attributed to humic-like substance (HULIS) and biologically derived material based on their significant correlations with measured HULIS isolated using solid-phase extraction and total hydrolyzable tyrosine. The year-long observation shows that HULIS contributes to 66 +/- 13% of total fluorescence intensity of our samples on average. By using dual carbon (C-13 and C-14) isotopic analysis conducted on isolated HULIS, the HULIS fraction of BrC was found to be primarily derived from biomass burning and emission of terrestrial biogenic gases and particles (>70%), with minor contributions from fossil-fuel combustion. The knowledge derived from this study could contribute to the establishment of a characterizing system of BrC components identified by EEM spectroscopy. Our work demonstrates that, EEM fluorescence spectroscopy is a powerful tool in BrC study, on the basis of its chromophore resolving power, allowing investigation into individual components of BrC by other organic matter characterization techniques.</P>

        Characteristics, Controlled-release and Antimicrobial Properties of Tea Tree Oil Liposomes-incorporated Chitosan-based Electrospun Nanofiber Mats

        In this paper, a notable chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) nanofiber mats containing tea tree oil liposomes (TOLCENs)were successfully fabricated using electrospinning process. The microstructures and morphology were characterizedby scanning electron microscopy. The porosity, fluid absorbability, water vapor permeability and mechanical properties ofnanofiber mats were also estimated by ethanol density method, gravimetric method, dish method and tensile test,respectively. Compared to the chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) composite freeze-dried sponges containing tea tree oilliposomes, TOL-CENs had greater porosity, water absorption, breathability and better mechanical properties. In addition, thecontrolled-release properties and long-term bactericidal capability of the material were also assessed. From the analysis of therelease kinetics and mechanism, it was found that the significant decreased terpinen-4-ol concentration gradient fromliposomal surface to the outside of material was the key to the sustained terpinen-4-ol release in virtue of liposomalencapsulation. TOL-CENs exhibited long-term and more excellent microbicidal effects against Staphylococcus aureus,Escherichia coli and Candida albicans than chitosan/poly(ethylene oxide) nanofiber mats. The combination of tea tree oilliposomes and chitosan in nanofiber mats synergistically destroyed cell membrane, prevented cell adhesion and caused theirregular aggregation of cytoplasm, resulting in cell disintegration observed by transmission electron microscope. Insummary, TOL-CENs had potential application value as a long-term antimicrobial nonwoven materials.

      • Energy-Sustainable Traffic Signal Timings for a Congested Road Network With Heterogeneous Users

        <P>This paper proposes a novel model to address the energy-efficient traffic signal timing problem for a congested road network with heterogeneous users. In the proposed model, two types of agents, i.e., the authority and road users, are considered together with the interaction between traffic signal settings and energy policy (e.g., fuel surcharges). To model the route choice behavior of heterogeneous users, a multiclass stochastic traffic network equilibrium problem that considers vehicle delays at signalized intersections and travel demand elasticity is described and formulated as a variational inequality formulation. The authority aims to maximize social welfare of the transportation system by optimizing the traffic signal timings and fuel surcharges. A simulated-annealing-based solution algorithm is developed to solve the proposed model. The findings show that the implementation of the fuel surcharge policy can cause spatial and social inequity issues.</P>

        21세기 들어와서 물류기업간의 경쟁이 날로 격화되고 있다. 이에 따라 물류비 절감, 고객 서비스의 향상, 정보통신기술의 활용 등 여러 요인에서 상대적인 경쟁우위를 확보하기 위한 노력을 경주하고 있다. 중국은 WTO 가입 후 물류산업분야에도 많은 발전이 있었지만, 아직도 다른 나라에 비해 GDP 대비 물류비의 비중이 높아 중국 경제에 부담으로 작용하고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 중국에서 제4자 물류는 많은 장점에도 불구하고 정부와 기업들의 문제로 본질적인 한계점을 가지고 있다. 본 논문의 연구 목적은 중국 제4자 물류에 대해 정부와 물류산업의 문제점을 제시하고 중국에서 제4자 물류를 도입하기 위한 기업 및 정부 차원의 해결방안을 제시함으로써 중국에서 제4자 물류의 발전에 기여하고 한국 제4자물류기업의 중국진출을 촉진시키는 것이다. Logistics industry was changed after China join into the WTO. Compared with other countries, cost of logistics is very high in China. Besides, there are several problems with the demand basis, service and information technology of the third-party logistics. The forth-party logistics was appeared in logistics market in this context. The forth-party logistics was just become to develop in China so there are many problems recent years. Chinese government propose some solutions with the development of the fourth-party logistics such as the adjustment of the logistics industry policy, strengthening of the logistics information system and infrastructure, training logistics expertise. This research pointed out the obstacles in the development of the forth-party logistics in China by analyzing the present situation and the development strategy of some representative companies such as ANDE Logistics Company and Philips Logistics Company. The purpose of this paper is to research the development of the forth-party logistics in China by analyzing the problems with Chinese government and logistics companies, and finally bring up some solutions with these problems.
