      • Evaluation and Performance Comparison between JPEG2000 and SVC

Xin Lu,Xuesong Jin 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.8 No.5

The scalable extension to the H.264/AVC has been established as a scalable video coding (SVC) standard, and JPEG2000 is a state of the act still image coding standard. The most distinctive difference between SVC and JPEG2000 is, in terms of spatial-frequency transformation, that SVC is based on the Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) and JPEG2000 is based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT). JPEG2000 outperforms its predecessor-JPEG which adopts DCT by nearly 30% in terms of compression performance. Despite the DWT has been successfully employed in still image coding, the latest video coding standard keeps on ultilising DCT and the relevant techniques as its coding tools. In this paper, we investigate SVC for intra frame coding and JPEG2000 for still image coding, on video sequences with different resolutions and features. From the experimental evaluations, we attempt to gain deeper insight into the application scenarios of these two transform techniques. The experimental results demonstrate that at high bitrates, JPEG2000 outperforms SVC, and it is vice versa. We also note that the PSNR difference between SVC and JPEG2000 decreases with increasing the picture resolution. Therefore, JPEG2000 is more suited for high definition picture compression. The spatial scalability of SVC and JPEG2000 is also investigated in the evaluation, and the results show that SVC gains quite better performance than JPEG2000.

Proteomics Approach to Decipher Novel Genes and Enzymes Characterization of a Bioelectricity-generating and Dye-decolorizing Bacterium Proteus hauseri ZMd44

        I-Son Ng,Xuesong Zheng,Bor-Yann Chen,Xiaoqin Chi,Yinghua Lu,Chun-Sheng Chang 한국생물공학회 2013 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.18 No.1

The first-attempt study employed a proteomics strategy for the identification of abundant proteins from a bioelectricity generation and dye decolorization bacterium Proteus hauseri ZMd44. By using the degenerated primers designed based on the peptide sequences from tandem mass spectroscopy and the whole genomics annotation of the closely associated strain, Proteus penneri ATCC 35198,the genes were successfully obtained for two full-length genes of 543 bp (laccase) and 1,086 bp (Omp F, porin)encoding to 181 amino acids and 362 amino acids, respectively. It explored laccase and NADH dehydrogenase involvement in the oxidation-reduction reaction as well, as porin played an important role in providing channels for related proteins in the accomplishment of electron transportation in P. hauseri. Detailed enzymatic assays indicated that laccase activity of 542.2 U/DCW could be stimulated by 2.5 mM copper induction in LB medium (ca. 293-fold to those without copper induction). Among intracellular proteins, NADH dehydrogenase activity of 257.2 U/mg via mediator riboflavin was in parallel with the decolorizing capability of azo dye Rb160 that only took place in LB medium. From the evaluation of kinetic parameters (Vmax and Km were 0.272 U/min and 0.393 mM with ABTS,0.046 U/min and 43.8 μM with NADH), it is better to decipher the decolorization mechanism of ZMd44 indicating that laccase and NADH dehydrogenase played the most crucial role for azo dye decolorization.

Outcrop modeling of flow units and reductant within a sandstone uranium reservoir in the Zhiluo Formation, eastern Ordos Basin: implications for the uranium mineralization mechanism

        Zhenpeng Tao,Liqun Wu,Yangquan Jiao,Hui Rong,Fan Zhang,Xuesong Lu 한국지질과학협의회 2022 Geosciences Journal Vol.26 No.5

The spatial distribution of flow units and reductant within a sandstone uranium reservoir is very beneficial for exploring the uranium mineralization mechanism; however, such studies have been almost neglected. As such, this paper aims to provide the sedimentological interpretation and heterogeneity models of the sandstone of the Middle Jurassic Zhiluo Formation at Shiwan outcrop area, in the eastern Ordos Basin. The outcrops are sandstone-dominated subaqueous distributary channel successions, in which five distinct architectural elements are identified and interpreted: channel units (CU), downstream accretion elements (DA), lateral accretion elements (LA), sandy bedforms (SB) and no-channelized fine-grained sediments (NFS). Within the sandstone succession, six flow units are present in the middle and lower parts of CU, or the lower parts of DA and SB elements, with their geometry to be controlled by the fourth- or third-order bounding surfaces. Moreover, the carbonaceous debris-rich zones (CDZ) are places with the highest abundance of reductant and preserve exclusively upon the basal erosional surfaces of CU and DA elements. Based on those results, a prediction model is established and shows that the formation of interlayer oxidation zone is strongly selective and confined within the CU and DA elements. The favorable site of uranium mineralization is preferentially distributed in the transition zone between the front of flow unit and the CDZ.

Associations of racial and ethnic discrimination with adverse changes in exercise and screen time during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States

        Xia Tong,Gee Gilbert C.,Jian Li,Liu Xinyue,Dai Jin,Shi Lu,Zhang Donglan,Chen Zhuo,Han Xuesong,Li Yan,Li Hongmei,Wen Ming,Su Dejun,Chen Liwei 한국역학회 2023 Epidemiology and Health Vol.45 No.-

Objectives: During the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, a growing prevalence of racial and ethnic discrimination occurred when many Americans struggled to maintain healthy lifestyles. This study investigated the associations of racial and ethnic discrimination with changes in exercise and screen time during the pandemic in the United States (US). Methods: We included 2,613 adults who self-identified as non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, non-Hispanic Asian, or Hispanic from the Health, Ethnicity, and Pandemic (HEAP) study, a cross-sectional survey conducted among a nationally representative sample of US adults between October and November 2020. We assessed self-reported racial and ethnic discrimination by measuring COVID-19-related racial and ethnic bias and examined its associations with changes in exercise and screen time using multivariable logistic regression models. We analyzed data between September 2021 and March 2022.Results: COVID-19-related racial and ethnic bias was associated with decreased exercise time among non-Hispanic Asian (odds ratio [OR]=1.46; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.13–1.89) and Hispanic people (OR=1.91; 95% CI, 1.32–2.77), and with increased screen time among non-Hispanic Black people (OR=1.94; 95% CI, 1.33–2.85), adjusting for age, gender, education, marital status, annual household income, insurance, and employment status. Conclusions: Racial and ethnic discrimination may have adversely influenced exercise and screen time changes among racial and ethnic minorities during the COVID-19 pandemic in the US. Further studies are needed to investigate the mechanisms through which racial and ethnic discrimination can impact lifestyles and to develop potential strategies to address racial and ethnic discrimination as a barrier to healthy lifestyles.
