This paper presents a study to investigate the feasibility of using robotic welding technologies to weld the continuity plate and the column flange plate during manufacturing steel built-up box columns in buildings. Specimens designed to emulate the key components in the steel beam-to-column moment connections for Special moment frame were fabricated and welded using a proposed automated procedure that performs multi-layer, multi-pass welding for thick steel plates. Effects of controlling parameters on robotic welding results that includes the manner of bead stacking, wire feed speed, travel speed, working angle, arc voltage, the path of the welding pass, and the methods to start and finish welding passes were investigated. The quality of the welded products was assessed by visual inspection and ultrasonic testing (UT). Further mechanical tests including tensile tests, bending tests, and cyclic loading tests were carried out on selected welded products that passed the UT examination. The test results indicated that the robotic welds showed no visible damage or cracks, met requirements specified in the AWS specification, and exhibited satisfactory strength and ductility.
The Effect of Monetary Policies on the Relationship between Advertising and Mutual Fund Flows
Ming-Hung Wu,Wei-Che Tsai,Miao-Ling Chen 한국증권학회 2016 Asia-Pacific Journal of Financial Studies Vol.45 No.5
This paper investigates the effect of monetary policies, mainly proxied by interest rate changes, on the relationship between advertising and subsequent net cash flows for Taiwan’s mutual fund industry. Based on a comprehensive mutual fund dataset and allowing for a precise estimation of fund inflows and outflows, we find that there is a positive advertising–cash flow relation under different macroeconomic conditions. Taking into account a change in the interest rate, we document that the positive relationship between the two only exists when the interest rate is at a relatively low level regardless of restrictive and expansionary periods. Our empirical findings shed new light on marketing strategies whereby mutual fund advertising works well during relatively low interest rate environments, which are generally interpreted as exhibiting low cost of capital and a good signal of future economic conditions.

This study describes a novel algorithm for optimizing the quality yield of silicon wafer slicing. 12 inch wafer slicing is the most difficult in terms of semiconductor manufacturing yield. As silicon wafer slicing directly impacts production costs, semiconductor manufacturers are especially concerned with increasing and maintaining the yield, as well as identifying why yields decline. The criteria for establishing the proposed algorithm are derived from a literature review and interviews with a group of experts in semiconductor manufacturing. The modified Delphi method is then adopted to analyze those results. The proposed algorithm also incorporates the analytic hierarchy process (AHP) to determine the weights of evaluation. Additionally, the proposed algorithm can select the evaluation outcomes to identify the worst machine of precision. Finally, results of the exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) control chart demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed AHP-based algorithm in effectively selecting the evaluation outcomes and evaluating the precision of the worst performing machines. So, through collect data (the quality and quantity) to judge the result by AHP, it is the key to help the engineer can find out the manufacturing process yield quickly effectively.

Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a thermal ablation technique widely used for the management of benign thyroid nodules. To date, five academic societies in various countries have reported clinical practice guidelines, opinion statements, or recommendations regarding the use of thyroid RFA. However, despite some similarities, there are also differences among the guidelines, and a consensus is required regarding safe and effective treatment in Asian countries. Therefore, a task force was organized by the guideline committee of the Asian Conference on Tumor Ablation with the goal of devising recommendations for the clinical use of thyroid RFA. The recommendations in this article are based on a comprehensive analysis of the current literature and the consensus opinion of the task force members.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the ability of B-mode ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to predict the repairability of large-to-massive rotator cuff tears (RCTs). Methods: This cross-sectional study included participants with large-to-massive RCTs who underwent arthroscopic repair. B-mode ultrasonography and MRI were conducted prior to arthroscopic repair. B-mode ultrasonography was used to evaluate the echogenicity of the rotator cuff muscle using the Heckmatt scale. Intra-rater and inter-rater reliabilities were examined for two independent physicians. MRI was used to evaluate the degrees of tendon retraction, fatty infiltration of rotator cuff muscles, and muscle atrophy. Finally, two experienced orthopedic surgeons performed surgery and decided whether the torn stump could be completely repaired intraoperatively. Results: Fifty participants were included, and 32 complete repairs and 18 partial repairs were performed. B-mode ultrasonography showed good intra-rater reliability and inter-rater reliability for assessment of the muscle echogenicity of the supraspinatus and infraspinatus muscles. The correlation coefficients between B-mode ultrasound findings and MRI findings showed medium to large effect sizes (r=0.4-0.8). The Goutallier classification of the infraspinatus muscles was the MRI predictor with the best discriminative power for surgical reparability (area under the curve [AUC], 0.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.81 to 0.98), while the Heckmatt scale for infraspinatus muscles was the most accurate ultrasound predictor (AUC, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.74 to 0.96). No significant differences in AUCs among the MRI and ultrasound predictors were found. Conclusion: B-mode ultrasonography was a reliable examination tool and had a similar ability to predict surgical reparability to that of MRI among patients with large-to-massive RCTs. Future Directions of Neural Monitoring in Thyroid Surgery
Hoon Yub Kim,Xiaoli Liu,Che-Wei Wu,Young Jun Chai,Gianlorenzo Dionigi 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2017 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.17 No.3
Dissecting and identifying the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) are considered routine procedures now that safe and effective methods have been established. Preventing RLN injury during thyroid surgery requires good visualization and exposure of the RLN, adequate knowledge of RLN anatomy, adequate surgical experience and training, and pre- and post-operative laryngoscopy. Whereas these requirements are widely accepted for routine thyroid surgery, new technical developments have emerged in the past 15 years. Literature show that both intermittent intraoperative neural monitoring (I-IONM) and continuous IONM (C-IONM) are recognized as effective techniques for RLN. The aim of this paper is to discuss advantages, limits and possible future directions for use of IONM and C-IONM in thyroid and parathyroid surgery.
Medico-Legal Issues of Intraoperative Neuromonitoring in Thyroid Surgery
Hoon Yub Kim,Xiaoli Liu,Hui Sun,Che-Wei Wu,Young Jun Chai,Woong Youn Chung,Ralph Tufano,Henning Dralle,Matteo Lavazza,Gianlorenzo Dionigi 대한갑상선-내분비외과학회 2017 The Koreran journal of Endocrine Surgery Vol.17 No.2
Advances in intraoperative neuromonitoring (IONM) in thyroid surgery have provided significant insights into recurrent laryngeal nerve function during thyroid surgery. Despite the limitations and necessary caution when using intraoperative monitors to interpret neural function, these technologies have been definite steps in the right direction for assessing neural integrity and safe surgical strategy during thyroid operations. The techniques discussed minimize the adverse sequelae of a variety of thyroid gland procedures, reducing the morbidity rates/risks in the perioperative period. Furthermore, it is likely that such monitoring will become a standard of care. Accurate, reliable and continuous monitoring is essential, and on-going large studies with definable end points will be necessary. The use of monitoring, such as continuous one, may improve cost efficiency by reducing permanent nerve injuries. A danger in this process, however, is the potential for public opinion, outside regulatory bodies, or medico-legal implications to drive change and enforce standards of care before appropriate data are available.
