Although the overall structure of the chloroplast genome is generally conserved, a number of sequence variations have been identified, which are valuable for plant population and evolutionary studies. Here, we constructed a chloroplast variation map of 30 landrace rice strains of Korean origin, using the Oryza rufipogon chloroplast genome (Genbank: NC_017835) as a reference. Differential distribution of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and indels across the rice chloroplast genome is suggestive of a region-specific variation. Population structure clustering revealed the existence of two clear subgroups (indica and japonica) and an admixture group (aus). Phylogenetic analysis of the 30 landrace rice strains and six rice chloroplast references suggested and supported independent evolution of O. sativa indica and japonica. Interestingly, two “aus” type accessions, which were thought to be indica type, shared a closer relationship with the japonica type. One hypothesis is that “Korean aus” was intentionally introduced and may have obtained japonica chloroplasts during cultivation. We also calculated the nucleotide diversity of 30 accessions and compared to six rice chloroplast references, which shown a higher diversity in the indica and aus groups than in the japonica group in lower level substitution diversity.

Sun, Wei,Ma, Xiu-Min,Bai, Jing-Ping,Zhang, Guo-Qing,Zhu, Yue-Jie,Ma, Hai-Mei,Guo, Hui,Chen, Ying-Yu,Ding, Jian-Bing Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.8
Objective: Transmembrane protein 166 (TMEM166) expression in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and remote normal esophageal tissues was examined to assess any role in tumour biology. Methods: TMEM166 mRNA expression in 36 cases with ESCC (36 tumour samples, 36 remote normal esophageal tissue samples) was detected by RT-PCR. TMEM166 protein expression was analysed in paraffin-embedded tissue samples from the same cases by immunohistochemistry. Results: Semi-quantitative analysis showed TMEM166 mRNA expression in ESCCs to be significantly lower than in remote normal esophageal tissues ($0.759{\pm}0.713$ vs. $2.622{\pm}1.690$, P=0.014). TMEM166 protein expression was also significantly reduced (69.4% vs. 94.4%, P<0.01). Conclusion: TMEM166 mRNA and protein expression demonstrated significant reduction in ESCCs compared with remote esophageal tissues, albeit with no correlation with tumour size, differentiation, stage, and lymph node metastasis, suggesting a role in regulating autophagic and apoptotic processes in the ESCC.

Activity-guided fractionation of the ethanol extract of the whole plant from Solanum lyratum resulted in the isolation of a new pregnane derivative glycoside, 16-dehydropregnenolone 3-O-${\alpha}$-L-rhamnopyranosyl-($1{\to}2$)-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranosid uronic acid (2), as well as other six known compounds: 16-dehydropregnenolone (1), allopregenolone (3), protocatechuic acid (4), vanillic acid (5), caffeic acid (6), and scopoletin (7). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectral data and chemical evidences. Compounds 1, 3, 4 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Cytotoxic activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated. Compound 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against A375-S2, HeLa, SGC-7901, and Bel-7402 with $IC_{50}$ values of $13.1{\pm}0.9,\;21.5{\pm}1.0,\;40.2{\pm}0.7$, and $49.8{\pm}1.2\;{\mu}g/mL$, respectively.

Transmembrane protein 18 (TMEM18) gene is expressed in the central nervous system that has recently been linked to human obesity and body mass index (BMI) in genome wide association studies (GWAS). In this study, two novel single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), g.3835 G > A (aa. Gly >Ser) and g.3865 A > G were detected in cattle TMEM18 gene by DNA sequencing. Polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) and forced PCR-RFLP methods were used to genotype the two SNPs in 1218 Chinese native cattle individuals. The association between novel SNPs and growth traits (especially on body weight and body height) in Nanyang cattle showed that individuals with GG genotype was higher than those with AA genotype at g.3835G>A locus (P < 0.05) in Nanyang cattle. Significant association also revealed that individuals of AA genotype at g. 3865 A>G locus were higher in terms of body weight, average daily gain, chest circunmference, body length (P < 0.05), body height and hucklebone width (P < 0.01) than GG genotypes in Nanyang cattle. Moreover, the effect of XspI-MluI combinations with growth traits in Nanyang cattle revealed that AAGG type had higher body weight, body length, chest circumference and average daily gain (P < 0.05)than GGAG in Nanyang cattle aged at 6 months.
Modification and Characterization of Nano-TiO2 for Efficient Fixation on Cotton Fibers
Min Wei,Shugen Wang,Chang Sun,Change Zhou,Jiadong Ni 한국섬유공학회 2018 Fibers and polymers Vol.19 No.11
In this paper, a silane coupling agent, 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane, was reacted with nano-TiO2 to introduce amino group onto it which was then reacted with trichlorotriazine to obtain a dichlorotriazine functionalized nano-TiO2 for the firm fixation of it on cotton fibers. The reaction process was monitored by the titration of primary and secondary amino groups, and the reaction conditions were optimized with orthogonal method accordingly. The dichlorotriazine functionalized nano-TiO2 was reacted with cotton fabric by the nucleophile substitution reaction to afford nano-TiO2 functionalized cotton fabric, the structure and surface morphology of the nano-TiO2 finished cotton fibers were studied by FT-TR and SEM. In addition, the fixation duration of the nano-TiO2 modified cotton was studied according to AATCC test method 61-2010. The results show that the washing fastness of the nano-TiO2 is excellent.

Background: The association between calcium channel blockers (CCBs) and survival in cancer patients remains unclear and the results of related studies are conflicting. The objective of the study was to investigate the association between calcium channel blockers (CCBs) use and survival in cancer patients. Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library for studies published before January 2016 with the terms related to CCBs and survival in cancer patients. The information was reviewed and extracted by two evaluators independently. Data of publications was extracted and calculated into hazard ratios (HRs) for overall survival (OS). Statistical analysis was performed by using Review Manager 5.3. Results: There were 11 studies included in our meta-analysis. Analysis of all studies showed that CCBs use was not associated with survival in cancer patients (HR=1.07; 95% CI: 0.91-1.25; P=0.42). No association between CCBs use and overall survival in cancer patients was existed whether in Asian (HR=1.18, 95% CI: 0.72-1.93; P=0.52) or Caucasian population (HR=1.03, 95% CI: 0.89-1.20; P=0.66). Conclusions: There is no evidence that CCBs use is associated with a better or worse outcome of survival in cancer patients.
