Analyzed are recent advances in design of novel boronared conjugates of synthetic and natural porphyrins and chlorins. These compounds showed high efficacy as cytotoxic agents for tumor cells in culture and as phototoxins in photodynamic therapy of tumor xenografts. Thus, boronated porphyrins and chlorins emerge as promising class of anticancer agents with potentially multiple advantages: the chemotherapeutic drugs alone and photo- and radiosensitizers in binary treatments.

This study was conducted to observe the quality characteristics of cheonggukjang fermented with new small-seed soybeans (‘Agakong’) according to the degree of germination of the raw soybeans. The sprouting rate was 8.6±5.6% after 12 hr of germination, but at 24 hr it increased rapidly to 85.4±4.7%. We confirmed that the total isoflavone content immediately after soaking was 273.9 mg%, which was at least 3 times greater than for common soybeans; content increased at the start of germination, and increased to 338.4 mg% by 24 hr of germination, but then decreased. The quantity of viscous substance of the cheonggukjang increased in proportion to the degree of germination of the raw soybeans. The levels of amino acids in the cheonggukjang made from non-germinated soybeans, and soybeans germinated 48 hr, were 12.45 and 10.06%, respectively. The isoflavone levels in the cheonggukjang were determined by the degree of germination of the raw soybeans. There were no significant differences between the odor, sweet taste, savory taste, bitter taste, and overall acceptability of the cheonggukjang with different germination times of 0 to 36 hr.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>New blue phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes containing 2-phenylpyridine derivatives as the main ligands and 4-substituted picolinates as the ancillary ligands were synthesized and their photophysical properties were investigated. In addition, the structures of three of the iridium(III) complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography. The photophysical data show that the introduction of electron-donating long-alkoxy or dialkylamino chain (–OCH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>2</SUB>OCH<SUB>2</SUB>CH<SUB>3</SUB>, –OC<SUB>5</SUB>H<SUB>11</SUB>, –OC<SUB>6</SUB>H<SUB>13</SUB>, –OC<SUB>7</SUB>H<SUB>13</SUB>, –N(C<SUB>3</SUB>H<SUB>7</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>, or –N(C<SUB>4</SUB>H<SUB>9</SUB>)<SUB>2</SUB>) on the 4-position of picolinate improved the phosphorescence quantum efficiencies (Φ<SUB>p</SUB>=0.57–0.77) of synthesized iridium(III) complexes with the maximum emission range of 461–464nm at 298K in ethanol solution. Interestingly, the substitution of the methyl group at the 4-position of the pyridine ring of the 2-phenylpyridine main ligands in the complexes with a more strongly electron-donating methoxy or dimethylamino group results in a significant bathochromic shift (69nm) rather than a hypsochromic shift of the phosphorescence emission maxima. Density field theory (DFT) calculations were performed to gain deeper understanding of these emission behaviors. The thermally most stable <B>Ir7</B> among the synthesized blue phosphorescent iridium(III) complexes was tested as an emitting material in a simple OLED device.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P>Dandelion (<I>Taraxacum officinale</I>), an oriental herbal medicine, has been shown to favorably affect choleretic, antirheumatic and diuretin properties. Recent reports have indicated that excessive oxidative stress contributes to the development of atherosclerosis-linked metabolic syndrome. The objective of this current study was to investigate the possible hypolipidemic and antioxidative effects of dandelion root and leaf in rabbits fed with a high-cholesterol diet. A group of twenty eight male rabbits was divided into four subgroups; a normal diet group, a high-cholesterol diet group, a high-cholesterol diet with 1% (w/w) dandelion leaf group, and a high-cholesterol diet with 1% (w/w) dandelion root group. After the treatment period, the plasma antioxidant enzymes and lipid profiles were determined. Our results show that treatment with dandelion root and leaf positively changed plasma antioxidant enzyme activities and lipid profiles in cholesterol-fed rabbits, and thus may have potential hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects. Dandelion root and leaf could protect against oxidative stress linked atherosclerosis and decrease the atherogenic index.</P>
Perilla屬 植物이 형태적,세포유전학적 특성 및 지방산 조성 분석

本 硏究는 들깨 국내 육성종을 포함한 蒐集種중 20種을 공시하여 이들 간의 形態的인 主要 特性, 生化學的인 特性과 細胞遺傳學的인 特性을 調査하고 遺傳的 多樣性을 밝혀 들깨의 分類와 品種有成에 있어서의 重要한 基礎 資科를 얻고자 本 實驗을 遂行하여 얻은 結果를 要約하면 다음과 같다. 들깨 수집종의 形態的, 生化學的, 細胞遺傳學的 特性을 調査해 본 바, 形態的 特性으로 種皮色은 약간의 농도차이는 있었으나 灰褐色, 褐色, 暗褐色(흑색)등 3群으로 나눌 수 있었으며, 于粒重은 3.5g 이하인 것이 11種으로 가장 많았고 4.5g 이하인 것이 4種 4.5g 이상인 것이 5種이었다. 또한 줄기색은 赤色과 綠色으로 분류되었는데 赤色은 안동재래를 포함 5種이었고 나머지는 綠色이었다. 生化學的인 特性으로 각 蒐集種을 대상으로 脂肪酸 조성을 調査해 본 바, 불포화도가 가장 높은 linolenic acid는 53%(영양재래)에서 65%(의성재래)에 이르기 까지 多樣하였으며, 59-61% 범위에 속하는 種이 12種으로 가장 많았다. 染色體 數는 조사한 4개의 蒐集種(안동재래, 엽실, 영광재래, 대영) 모두가 2n=38로 나타났다. This study was conducted to obtain the basic information for the classification of P erilla spp. based on their major morphological characteristics for the 20 local collections of perilla distributed in Korea. The results of this experiment were summarized as follows : Several morphological characteristics were investigated. Seed color was classified to four groups with greshywhite, greshybrown, brown and darkbrown. The 1,000 grain weight, 11 accessions were below 3.5g, four accessions was 3.6g to 4.5g and five accessions was 4.5g to 5.07g. There was two types of stem color, red and green, 15 accessions was green and 5 accessions including Andongjaerae, Yeupsil, Ockdong, Cheongsongjaerae and Chugjaso were red color. In fatty acid composition was 60% in average. Among 20 accessions, Euseongjaerae showed the highest content(65%) and Yeongyangjaerae the lowest(54%) linolenic acid content. In the cytogenetical studies on the four accessions including Andong, Yeupsil, Yeongkwang and Daeyeong, the number of chromosomes were 2n=38.

A series of new organic semiconductors hexyl end-capped thiophene-anthracene oligomers containing the anthracene moiety in the center of the oligomers are synthesized. The target oligomers have been obtained by Stille coupling reactions as key step reactions. The synthesized thiophene-anthracene oligomers were characterized by 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR and high-resolution mass spectroscopy, respectively. All of the oligomers are soluble in chlorinated solvents. Their optical, thermal and electrochemical properties were measured. The hexyl end-capped oligomers and their unsubstituted oligomers exhibit the same absorption behavior in dilute toluene solution. Hexyl end-capped bis-terthienylanthracene oligomer is observed to show liquid crystalline mesophase at 166 oC in heating process. The thermal analyses as well as the electrochemical measurement data indicate that the designed materials show better thermal and oxidation stability than the corresponding oligothiophenes without anthracene core. Fluorescence lifetimes and fluorescence quantum yields of the thiophene-anthracene oligomers are measured to be 10-14 ps and 3.4-9.9 × 10?3 which are much shorter and lower than those of oligothiophenes respectively.
