Purpose: Premixed insulin is effective to improve glycemic control; however, clinicians may be less likely to know which premixed insulin is appropriate for which patients. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of twice-daily injections of premixed insulin lispro on glycemic control in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials and Methods: Forty type 2 diabetic patients, who had been treated with twicedaily injections of human protamine mixture 30/70 insulin for at least 12 months, were divided into two groups; one group whose blood glucose 2 hours after breakfast was greater than 200 mg/dL, was switched to lispro mix50, and the other group whose blood glucose 2 hours after breakfast < 200 was switched to lispro mix25. Results: Glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c) significantly improved in the Mix50 group from 8.3% to 7.5% (at 12 weeks; p < 0.05), and to 7.5% (at 24weeks; p < 0.05). On the other hand, HbA1c levels in the Mix25 group were slightly decreased from 8.1% to 7.7% at 12 weeks (p < 0.05), and to 7.9% at 24weeks (not significant). Both postprandial plasma glucose and fasting plasma glucose levels were significantly improved in the Mix50 group, but not in the Mix25 group. Overall, 95% of subjects preferred premixed lispro insulin from human insulin in the viewpoint of the timing of insulin injection by questionnaire analysis. Conclusion: Switching from human protamine mixture 30/70 insulin to lispro mix50 twice-daily injection therapy in patients with high postprandial plasma glucose could improve their glycemic control and quality of life.

Ishijima, Shunichi,Shimizu, Naoto,Masuda, Tsuyoshi,Seki, Yoichi,Tobita, Seiji Korean Society for Engineering Education 2012 공학교육연구 Vol.15 No.4
In this paper, the purpose and overview of the "Frontier Leadership Program for Engineering Students through Joint Participation of Higher Education and the Industrial Sector" (FLC: Frontier Leadership Course) in Gunma University is reported together with our achievements during the last three years. The purpose of this special educational program is to promote and educate selected students who are highly motivated to learn science & mathematics and to become an active leader in industrial sectors or research institutes. The activity can be divided into two categories: "Student-Proposed Stream" and "Advanced Research Stream". These activities were found to be useful to cultivate student's leadership and global communication ability. Furthermore, most of the FLC students cultivated the excellent academic performance and five students among them will be allowed to skip their fourth undergraduate year and enter directly into our graduate school.

Fluorescence Behavior of Benzo[f]Quinoline Doped In Lpd Silica Thin Films

By using the liquid -phase-deposition (LPD) process, which has a potetnial of preparing organic inorganic composite materials, samples doped with benzo[f]quinoline (BfQ)into silica thia films wre prepared. We observed the fluorescene and fluorescene excitation spectra of the samples, as well as the fluorescence lifetimes and time-resoluved fluorescence spectra. The comparison of thefluorescence spectra in pH-controlled buffer solutions yields the results that the dominant species of BfQ in the LPD silica films is a protonated one. The fluorescence band assigned to a hydrogen-bonded species was observed on the samples prepared from the dipping solutions of 3 and 2 M hexafluorosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the fluorescence lifetime measurement. The FT-IR M hexaflurosilicic acid. The band assignment was confirmed by the flurescence lifetime meausurement. The FT-IR data proved the existence of included water in silica films prepared from the LPD process. The appearance of the band corresponding to the hydrogen-bonded species within LPD silica phases was explained by the proesence of included water. Depending on the preparation conditions of LPD silica films, the band assigned to protonated species shows bad shifts in a wavenumber region between the peak of hydrogen-bonded and typical protonated species. This implies that there is some distribution of steric conformation of protonated species of BfQ interacting with adsorbing sites of LPD silica. The time -resolved fluorescence spectra suggest that some relaxation process is involved in the conformation of BfQ doped into the solid phase of LPD silica.

To retrospectively evaluate relative enhancement (RE) in the hepatobiliary phase of gadoxetic acid disodium-enhanced magnetic resonance (MR) imaging as a preoperative estimation of future remnant liver (FRL) function in a patients who underwent portal vein embolization (PVE). In 53 patients, the correlation between the indocyanine green clearance (ICG-K) and RE imaging was analyzed before hepatectomy (first analysis). Twenty-three of the 53 patients underwent PVE followed by a repeat RE imaging and ICG test before an extended hepatectomy and their results were further analyzed (second analysis). Whole liver function and FRL function were calculated on the MR imaging as follows: RE x total liver volume (RE Index) and FRL-RE x FRL volume (Rem RE Index), respectively. Regarding clinical outcome, posthepatectomy liver failure (PHLF) was evaluated in patients undergoing PVE. Indocyanine green clearance correlated with the RE Index (r = 0.365, p = 0.007), and ICG-K of FRL (ICG-Krem) strongly correlated with the Rem RE Index (r = 0.738, p < 0.001) in the first analysis. Both the ICG-Krem and the Rem RE Index were significantly correlated after PVE (r = 0.508, p = 0.013) at the second analysis. The rate of improvement of the Rem RE Index from before PVE to after PVE was significantly higher than that of ICG-Krem (p = 0.014). Patients with PHLF had a significantly lower Rem RE Index than patients without PHLF (p = 0.023). Relative enhancement imaging can be used to estimate FRL function after PVE.
