We present a retrospedctive study on the patients with coma without mass lesion on CT scan after non-missile head injury. We reviewed various clinical and radiological features of these 53 cases and compared the outcome at one month with several variables which may affect the prognosis. The patients were selected by the following criteria ; the patients had lost consciousness at least for 6 hours, the Glasgow coma scores were below B, and the CT scan did not demonstrate a mass lesion but might have small contusion, subarachnoid hemorrhage and pneumocephalus that caused no mass effect. Characteristic CT findings for the diffuse axonal injury-small intracerebral hemorrhage on corpus callosum, white mater, basal ganglia or around the third ventricle-were observed in only 21 of 53 cases(39.6%). Thus diffuse axonal injury can be diagnosed by clinical features not by the CT findings at present and the CT scan was required for ruling out any mass lesions. The mortality rate was 32.1%. However, 37.7% was remained in the vegetative state or severe disability. Only 30.2% could obtain functional recovery. The changes of pupil, duration of coma, Glasgow coma score, skull fracture and collapsed lateral ventricle on CT scan were identified as important features in determining the outcome(p<0.05). Age, systolic BP, PaO2 and obliteration of basal cistern and third ventricle on CT scan had no statistical significance.

Oncogenic osteomalacia is a rare clinicopathological condition. The syndrome is characterized by hypophosphataemic osteomalacia with hyperphosphaturia, low plasma 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D and normal plasma calcaemia and parathyroid hormone, associated with a tumor, generally of mesenchymal origin. Complete excision of the tumour results in cure of the whole syndrome. Recently we experienced 56-year-old woman with oncogenic osteomalacia caused by a chondromyxoid fibroma of the left foot. We report this case with the review of literatures (J Kor Soc Endocrinol 14:764-770, 1999).

The effects of low temperature and starvation on the physiochemical characteristics of the muscle of the olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus, were examined. Fish were deprived of feed for 28 days at 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 20°C in order to establish suitable conditions for live fish transportation. Throughout most of the 4 weeks of feed restriction, the physiochemical characteristics of the muscle of olive flounder were found to be dependent on the acclimation temperature. The breaking strength of muscle did not show a significant reduction during feed restriction at 2 and 4°C. With increasing temperatures, however, the breaking strength of muscle differed significantly according to the individual and feed restriction period (P<0.05). The moisture content in muscle acclimated at 10, 12, and 20°C increased steadily over the feed-restriction period, while the crude lipid content decreased during the same period (P<0.05). At water temperatures above 2-8°C, no significant differences were shown during the same period. After it reached 6, 8, 10, 12, and 20°C, the muscle had an accumulation of lactate, and a loss of ATP. There was no change in the lactate or ATP content during the feed restriction period at 2 and 4°C, although there were differences among the water temperature groups, These results clearly show that temperature can have an important influence on the of muscle of physiochemical characteristics of muscle during live fish transportation.

In this work, the annealing characteristics of chemically recycled cation dyeable poly(ethylene terephthalate) (CD PET) fibers were investigated and compared with those of regular CD PET. Recycled CD PET was polymerized using chemically recycled monomers of dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), which is chemically recycled from final products such as bottles and fibers. Mechanical properties and structural changes were studied for different annealing temperatures and times. The tensile properties and structural changes of recycled CD PET show similar behavior to those of regular CD PET. The crystal structure of chemically recycled CD PET developed well with increasing annealing temperature and time. At annealing temperature of $180^{\circ}C$, thermal shrinkage decreases to below 2% even after 10 min of annealing.

Crosslinked poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) membranes were prepared at various crosslinking temperatures using poly(acrylic acid-co-maleic acid) (PAM) containing different PAM contents. The thermal properties of these PVA/PAM membranes prepared at various reaction temperatures were characterized using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The proton conductivity and methanol permeability of PVA/PAM membranes were then investigated as PAM content was varied from 3 to 13 wt%. It was found that the proton and methanol transport were dependent on PAM content in their function both as crosslinking agent and as donor of hydrophilic -COOH groups. Both these properties decreased monotonously with increasing PAM concentration. The proton conductivities of these PVA/PAM membranes were in the range from $10^{-3}\;to\;10^{-2}S/cm$ and the methanol permeabilities from $10^{-7}\;to\;10^{-6}cm^{2}/sec$. In addition, the effect of operating temperature up to $80^{\circ}C$ on ion conductivity was examined for three selected membranes: 7, 9 and 11 wt% PAM membranes. Ion conductivity increased with increasing operating temperature and showed and S/cm at $80^{\circ}C$, respectively. The effects of crosslinking and ionomer group concentration were also examined in terms of water content, ion exchange capacity (IEC), and fixed ion concentration. In addition, the number of water molecules per ionomer site was calculated using both water contents and IEC values. With overall consideration for all the properties measured in this study, $7{\sim}9\;wt%$ PAM membrane prepared at $140^{\circ}C$ exhibited the best performance. These characteristics of PVA/PAM membranes are desirable in applications related to the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC).
