UPS Applying Big Data Analytics to Logistics:
Sung-Hee “Sunny” Park,Do-Hong Kim 한국경영정보학회 2014 한국경영정보학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2014 No.1
Managing big data has become increasingly important to businesses as big data analytics can transform big data into insightful information. But, not many companies utilize it efficiently and effectively. While many companies in the transportation industry are facing many challenges with big data, United Parcel Service (UPS) is successfully applying big data analytics to logistics. UPS’s proprietary routing software, called ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation), uses package-level detail and customized online map data to provide drivers with optimized routing information. In 2013, ORION resulted in reductions of more than 1.5 million gallons of fuel and 14,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions. This paper discusses UPS’s innovative path to optimization from data gathering to visualization.

Background: As more females smoke, women’s health is in danger. New smoking cessation programs incorporating the special needs of female populations is awaited. Self- performed hand massage with aroma oil was suggested to be promisingly effective to help stop smoking, hence rigorous testing is warranted. Purpose: To test the effects of self-hand massage with aroma oil on the smoking habit and the depression of female college student smokers. Method: Fifty-one female college student smokers who wished to stop smoking took part in the study. The participants were randomly allocated to either an educational program on smoking cessation only, or self- hand massage with aroma oil for 4 weeks in addition to the educational program. The aroma oil was comprised of Lavender, Chamomile, and Bergamot essence oil. Result: The self-hand massage with aroma oil group showed significant changes on daily cigarette use and depression. Conclusion: It is promising that self-hand massage with aroma oil can be an effective adjunctive to reduce the use of daily cigarettes, and improve the depression of female college student smokers who attempted to stop smoking.

Purpose This study explored the work adjustment trajectory and its predictors and characteristics among newly registered nurses. Methods A total of 245 newly registered nurses working in a university hospital provided general baseline characteristics and completed a work adjustment questionnaire along with self-report measures of clinical competency, psychological capital, preceptor exchange, social support, and role conflict when they started working independently (baseline) and at 7 and 12 months after employment. Data were collected from July 2020 to August 2022. The collected data were subjected to a group-based trajectory model, χ2 test, F test, one-way ANOVA, and multiple logistic regression using SAS 9.4, and SPSS 25.0. Results Group-based trajectory modeling classified three newly registered nurse groups: nurses with a high work adjustment level in all subscales from the beginning of employment (early adjustment group, 16.1%), nurses with a moderate level of adjustment from beginning to end (standard adjustment group, 60.6%), and nurses with a low level of work adjustment from early to mid-term, rising later (delayed adjustment group, 23.3%). Higher hope, optimism, and emotional support predicted early and standard adjustments. Conclusions Based on the trajectory characteristics, newly registered nurses need to improve their work adjustment. The early and standard adjustment groups should continuously monitor their levels of work adjustment while monitoring their hopes, optimism, and emotional support. In particular, the delayed adjustment group required customized educational programs and strengthened peer support.

Larvae black soldier fly, Hermetia illucens, is beneficial because its larvae feed on organic materials derived from plants, animals and humans and promote the recycling of food waste and organic materials. Chymotrypsin serine protease is one of the main digestive proteases in the midgut of and is involved in various essential processes. In a previous study, a gene encoding a chymotrypsin-like protease, Hi-SP1, was cloned from the larvae of Hermetia illucens and characterized. The objective of this study was to compare the digestive enzyme activity with various enzymes such as papain, protease and α-chymotrypsin. And also, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of the Hi-SP1 against the spoilage relate bacteria. The growth of the bacteria was inhibited in nutrient broth containing the Hi-SP1.

The current study had three aims: (1) to validate a Korean version of the Student Athletes’ Motivation toward Sports and Academics Questionnaire (SAMSAQ-Kr), (2) to examine South Korean university student-athletes’ motivation towards athletic and academic achievement, and (3) to identify the relationship between athletic identity and their athletic and academic achievement. A total of 126 South Korean university student-athletes (41.4% males and 58.6% females; mean age 20.5, SD = 2.74) completed the SAMSAQ-Kr. To investigate the validity evidence of the SAMSAQ-Kr a confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and Rasch model were employed. To examine the relationship between Athletic Identity Measurement Scale (AIMS) and SAMSAQ for Spearman correlation coefficients were calculated. Findings indicated that the SAMSAQ-Kr showed a different model from other versions and revealed positive correlations between AIMS scores and athletic motivations. The current study highlighted that importance of considering socio-cultural context in developing questionnaire and contributed to help understand South Korean university student-athletes’ motivation towards athletic and academic achievement.
