        Associations of serotonergic genes with poststroke emotional incontinence

        <P><B>Objectives</B></P><P>Poststroke emotional incontinence (PSEI) has been associated with serotonergic dysfunction. Polymorphisms of serotonin transporter (5‐HTT) and serotonin 2a receptor (5‐HTR2a) genes may regulate serotonergic signaling at brain synapses, and this study was to investigate associations with PSEI in an East Asian population.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>In 276 stroke cases, PSEI was diagnosed by Kim's criteria. Covariates included age, gender, education, history of depression or stroke, current depression, and stroke severity and location. Genotypes were ascertained for 5‐HTT gene‐linked promoter region (5‐HTTLPR), serotonin transporter intron 2 variable number tandem repeat, 5‐HTR2a 1438A/G, and 5‐HTR2a 102 T/C. Associations with PSEI were estimated by using logistic regression models, and gene–gene interactions were investigated by using the generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction method.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>PSEI was present in 37 (13.4%) patients. The 5‐HTT gene‐linked promoter region <I>s</I>/<I>s</I> genotype was independently associated with PSEI. No associations with STin2 VNTR and 5‐HTR2a genes were found, and no significant gene–gene interactions were identified.</P><P><B>Conclusions</B></P><P>Stroke patients with 5‐HTTLPR <I>s</I> allele had higher susceptibility to PSEI, which underlines the potential role of serotonergic pathways in its etiology.         예비유아교사 임용직전 교육프로그램 개발 및 교사역량에 미치는 효과

        본 연구는 예비유아교사가 정교사로 임용되기 직전 교사로서의 역량을 강화하지 위한 교육프로그램을 개발하고 이 프로그램이 예비유아교사의 교사역량에 미치는 효과를 살펴보고자 하는 데 그 목적이 있다 이러한 목적을 달성하기 위하여 설정한 연구문제는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 예비유아교사 임용직전 교육프로그램 구성은 어떠한가? 둘째, 예비유아교사 임용직전 교육프로그램이 교육신념, 전문적 자질, 교사효능감에 미치는 효과는 어떠한가? 교사역량을 갖춘 유야교사가 되기 위한 예비유아교사 임용직전교육프로그램의 개발은 문헌고찰, 예비유아교사와 현직유아교사의 인식 조사, 전문가 의견 조사를 거쳐 프로그램의 목표 및 교육내용, 교수-학습 방법을 구성하였다. 예비유아교사 대상 임용직전 교육프로그램의 효과를 살펴보기 위하여 대구시내에 소재한 B 전문대학 유아교육과 3학년 재학생 30명을 실험집단, 30명을 비교집단으로 구분하였다. 실험집단을 대상으로 주 3회, 총 12회기에 걸쳐 실험을 진행하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 18.0 프로그램을 이용하여 실험집단과 비교집단의 사전검사, 사후검사, 추후검사의 평균과 표준편차를 산출하고 시기별 점수 차이가 있는지 알아보기 위하여 집단과 시기를 독립변인으로 한 반복측정 분산분석(repeated measures ANOVA)을 실시하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 예비유아교사의 교사역량을 향상시키기 위한 임용직전 교육프로그램은 교육신념, 전문적 자질, 개인적 자질, 교사효능감 증진을 위한 12회기 프로그램으로 개발되었다. 교수-학습 내용 및 방법은 교사역할에 대한 자신감 및 구체적 기술을 다양한 활동과 반성적 과정을 통해 학습할 수 있도록 구성하였다. 둘째, 예비유아교사 임용직전 교육프로그램은 교육신념, 전문적 자질, 개인적 자질, 교사효능감 증진에 긍정적인 효과가 있다. 본 연구를 통하여 예비유아교사에게 필요한 현장적응 역량 강화교육의 중요성이 강조된다. The purpose of this study was to develop an educational program for pre-service early childhood teachers and to investigate the program`s effects on the teachers` teaching competence. The research questions were as follows. First, what is the purpose, contents, teaching-learning methods, and the assessment of the educational program for pre-service early childhood teachers? Second, what are the effects of the program on teaching beliefs, professional disposition, and teaching efficacy of the pre-service early childhood teachers? The educational program for pre-service early childhood teachers was constructed through literature reviews, surveys on the perceptions of in-service and pre-service teachers, and interviews of early childhood professionals to develop the purpose, the contents, the teaching-learning methods, and the assessment of the educational program. The effects of the programs were investigated by carrying out an experLn1ental study. A total of 30 pre-service early childhood teachers were assigned to the experimental group and 30 pre-service early childhood teachers were assigned to the comparative group. The experimental group participated in 3 sessions per week for a total of 12 sessions. The teaching beliefs was examined by Moon`s (1993) scale, the personal and the professional disposition by Ki`s (2008) scale, and the leaching efficacy by Kim`s (2000) scale. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS 18.0. A pre-test, a post-test, and an afterward-test were carried out to compare the means of the experimental and the comparative groups using a repeated measures ANDV A. The results of this study were as follows. First, the teaching competence of pre-service early childhood teachers were composed of the teaching beliefs, the personal and the professional disposition, and the teaching efficacy. The educational program for pre-service early childhood teachers was developed for 12 sessions to promote the teaching competence through reflective and hands-on activities. Second, the experimental group`s teaching beliefs, personal and professional disposition and disposition and teaching efficacy improved by participating in the educational program developed by this study. The results of this study emphasize the importance of educating the early childhood pre-service teachers to promote their practical knowledge applicable to their teaching profession.

        Physical Dormancy in Seeds of Chinese Milk Vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) from Korea

        Freshly harvested seed of Chinese milk vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.; CMV) was strongly dormant because of hardseedness. Seeds of freshly harvested germinated only 8% while clipping the seed coat completely overcome the innate dormancy, which indicates inhibition of germination of the seed is mainly due to seed coat (87%). The dormant (intact) hard seeds did not imbibe water whereas the non-dormant (clipped) seeds took up rapidly. In natural environment condition, the hard seed coat dormancy was broken only after 5 months after seed harvest. To break such a strong seed coat dormancy, the chemical and heat treatments were effective. Concentrated sulfuric acid was more effective than dry heat and hot water treatments. Hot water treatment improved germination but the germination percentage was less than 41%. Treatments increased germination due to its effect on the seed coat integrity. A scanning electron microscope reveled that disruption of seed coat layers and subsequent development of numerous crack in the hilum region of the seed and on the seed coat surface of concentrated sulfuric acid treatment and formation of cracks in the dry heat treatments, respectively, were observed in the seed coat surface, which served as water entry points.

        Relationship Between MicroRNA Signature and Arterial Stiffness in Patients With Ischemic Stroke

        Background and Purpose We investigated whether circulating microRNAs (miRNAs) is associated with arterial stiffness in patients with acute ischemic stroke. Methods We recruited patients with acute ischemic stroke who were admitted to a university hospital stroke center and underwent carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV) measurement using SphygmoCor (AtCor Medical, Sydney, Australia) and brachial-ankle PWV using a volume-plethysmography device (VP-1000, Omron Colin, Komaki, Japan). Circulating miRNAs were measured in venous blood samples stored in EDTA. We selected five miRNAs (miR-17, miR-93, miR-450, miR-629, and let-7i) related to atherosclerosis based on a literature review. Pearson’s correlation analysis was applied to the correlations between miRNAs and arterial stiffness parameters. Finally, multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to identify the independent factors for cfPWV. Results This study included 70 patients (age=71.1±10.3 years [mean±SD], 29 females). The expression levels of miR-93 (r=-0.27, p=0.049) and let-7i (r=-0.27, p=0.039) were inversely correlated with cfPWV. Multivariable linear regression analysis including age, hypertension, and estimated glomerular filtration rate showed that let-7i was independently related with cfPWV (standardized coefficient=-0.262, p=0.036). Correlation analysis indicated that let-7i was positively associated with visceral muscle Hounsfield units on computed tomography (r=0.264, p=0.043). Conclusions The expression level of let-7i was independently related to arterial stiffness in patients with cerebral infarction, suggesting that it plays a pathophysiological role in atherosclerosis.

        A mechanistic study on the hydrogen trapping property and the subsequent electrochemical corrosion behavior of quenched and tempered steel

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The hydrogen-facilitated anodic dissolution of steel is an interesting experimental phenomenon, but the persistent gaps in this knowledge area are great. The changes in the Tafel slopes and the reaction rates of steel that has been cathodically charged with hydrogen are interpreted mainly in the context of hydrogen trapping and de-trapping behaviors of steel using a variety of electrochemical methods. This study reveals that the increase in the anodic current density and the decrease in the polarization resistance are attributed primarily to the hydrogen-induced lattice expansion. Based on the Tafel-slope change, the oxidation of hydrogen cation partly contributed to the increase in the total anodic current density together with the dominant anodic reaction of the steel dissolution. The electrochemical permeation measurements showed much slower effusion kinetics of the hydrogen that has been trapped at the ε-carbide particles, and the trapping and de-trapping behavior at the fine particles are one of the controlling factors of the hydrogen-enhanced anodic dissolution of steel.       • Luminescence Properties of Si Nanocrystals Fabricated by Ion Beam Sputtering and Annealing

        <P>During the past several decades, Si nanocrystals (NCs) have received remarkable attention in view of potential optoelectronic device applications. This paper summarizes recent progress in the study of luminescence from Si NCs, such as photoluminescence (PL), cathodoluminescence, time-solved PL, and electroluminescence. The paper is especially focused on Si NCs produced by ion beam sputtering deposition of<SUB>SiOx</SUB>single layer or<SUB>SiOx</SUB>/SiO2multilayers and subsequent annealing. The effects of stoichiometry (x) and thickness of Si<SUB>Ox</SUB>layers on the luminescence are analyzed in detail and discussed based on possible mechanisms.</P>

      • Anomalous behaviors of visible luminescence from graphene quantum dots: interplay between size and shape.

        <P>For the application of graphene quantum dots (GQDs) to optoelectronic nanodevices, it is of critical importance to understand the mechanisms which result in novel phenomena of their light absorption/emission. Here, we present size-dependent shape/edge-state variations of GQDs and visible photoluminescence (PL) showing anomalous size dependences. With varying the average size (d(a)) of GQDs from 5 to 35 nm, the peak energy of the absorption spectra monotonically decreases, while that of the visible PL spectra unusually shows nonmonotonic behaviors having a minimum at d(a) = ~17 nm. The PL behaviors can be attributed to the novel feature of GQDs, that is, the circular-to-polygonal-shape and corresponding edge-state variations of GQDs at d(a) = ~17 nm as the GQD size increases, as demonstrated by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy.</P>

        Effect of Extenders with TCG and DMSO on the Viability of Rabbit Sperm

        The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of addition of ethylene glycol, glycerol and sucrose to TCG (Tris, Citric Acid, Glucose, Egg Yolk) and DMSO Frozen. The extender containing Egg yolk concentration (10%, 20%) affects viability and acrosome morphology of rabbit sperm. Sperm viability was then assessed for the freezing extenders TCGD (Tris + Citricacid + Glucose + DMSO), TCGED (Tris + Citricacid + Glucose + Egg yolk + DMSO), TCGGD (Tris + Citricacid + Glucose + Glycerol + DMSO) and TCGSD Tris + Citricacid + Glucose + Sucrose + DMSO) during thawing at 38oC. for 20 seconds, respectively. TCG + 10% egg yolk (viability: 77.0 ± 0.8, NAI: 73.3 ± 0.9) was significantly (sperm viability and normal acrosome interaction (NAI)) higher than TCG + 20% egg yolk (70.7 ± 1.1, 70.0 ± 0.9) in the sperm normalcy analysis according to the yolk concentration. TCGGD (53.4 ± 0.1, 62.3 ± 0.4), TCGSD (61.3 ± 0.0, 67.1 ± 0.1) sperm viability and normal acrosome interaction (NAI) in frozen spermatozoa are TCGD (46.4 ± 2.8 and 56.3 ± 1. 4) and TCGED (23.0 ± 1.1 and 54.6 ± 1.4) extenders was thawed at 38oC for 20 seconds. According to the results from each frozen bulking agent, sperm membrane integrity by hypotonic swelling test (HOST) analysis in TCGGD (59.8 ± 0.7), TCGSD (59.3 ± 0.5) was significantly high compared to other experimental groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, these results suggested that TCGGD and TCGSD extenders enhance survivability of rabbit sperm after frozen-thawing.
