Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess the correlation relationship between personal exposure and urinary hippuric acid in biological monitoring for airborne toluene in an industrial complex and in general environments. Methods: Personal exposure to toluene and its metabolite, hippuric acid, in urine were simultaneously measured in occupational environments area near an industrial complex and in general environments. The study subjects were divided into three types: 137 workers who use organic solvents in the workplace, 210 residents living near a dyeing industrial complex, and 379 residents living in general environments. The toluene exposures of workers and residents were measured by a passive sampler for four days. The urine of participants was sampled when the passive samplers of personal exposure were collected. Results: The toluene and hippuric acid concentrations of workers were the highest, followed by the concentrations of residents living near a dyeing industrial complex and residents living in general environments. The coefficient of correlation between the concentrations of toluene and hippuric acid among workers was 0.749 (p<0.01) in the workplace. On the contrary, correlations between the concentrations of toluene and hippuric acid among residents living near a dyeing industrial complex and residents living in general environments were all not significant. The relationship between the concentrations of hippuric acid and toluene in three types could be described by the exponential growth model. Conclusions: This study analyzed the relationships between toluene exposure and the concentrations of hippuric acid in urine in high, middle, and low exposure environments, and could be described by the exponential growth model.

Study Design: An experimental study with extracellular vesicles (EVs) from mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) of the epidural fat (EF) of the spine. Purpose: This study aims to isolate the exosomes from epidural fat-derived mesenchymal stem cells (EF-MSCs) and fully characterize the EF-MSC-EVs. Overview of Literature: EF-MSCs were reported in 2019, and a few studies have shown the positive outcomes of using EF-MSCs to treat specific spine pathologies. However, MSCs have significant limitations for conducting basic studies or developing therapeutic agents. Although EVs are an emerging research topic, no studies have focused on EVs, especially exosomes, from EF and EF-MSCs. Methods: In this study, we isolated the exosomes using the tangential flow filtration (TFF) system with exosome-depleted fetal bovine serum and performed the characterization tests via western blotting, reverse transcription–polymerase chain reaction, nanoparticle tracking analysis (NTA), and transmission electron microscopy. Results: In transmission electron microscopy, the exosome had a diameter of approximately 100–200 nm and had a spherical shape, whereas in the NTA, the exosome had an average diameter of 142.8 nm with a concentration of 1.27×1010 particles/mL. The flow cytometry analysis showed the expression of CD63 and CD81. The western blotting analysis showed the positive markers. Conclusions: These findings showed that isolating the exosomes via TFF resulted in high-quality EF-MSC exosome yield. Further studies with exosomes from EF-MSC are needed to evaluate the function and role of the EF tissue.

( Sang Hwa Han ),( Kang Hoon Lee ),( Joon Hee Kim ),( Myeong Hyeon Yang ),( Min Soo Jang ),( Kee Suck Suh ) 대한피부과학회 2015 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.67 No.1
Pigmented spindle cell nevus (PSCN), also known as Reed nevus, is a melanocytic lesion clinically characterized by well circumscribed hyperpigmented flat macule. PSCN should be differentiated from Spitz nevus, dysplastic nevus, and malignant melanoma. Histologically, symmetrical proliferation and linear band-like arrangement of pigmented melanophages in the papillary dermis can be seen. And uniform, narrow, elongated, and spindle shaped cells were vertically oriented in the dermal-epidermal junction. A 27-year-old male presented with solitary well demarcated 4 x 5 mm sized blackish macule on the left arm. On dermoscopy, blackish homogenous pattern and partially distributed starburst pattern were found. Histopathologic findings showed symmetrical proliferation and linear band-like arrangement of pigmented melanophages in the papillary dermis. And uniform, narrow, elongated pigmented spindle cells were vertically oriented in dermal-epidermal junction. On the basis of these clinical, dermoscopic, and histological findings, the diagnosis of PSCN was made. Dermoscopy allows one to see surface and subsurface skin structures not easily detected by the naked eye. The typical dermoscopic findings of PSCN were reported as starburst, homogenous, globular, or peripheral reticular patterns. Herein, we report a case of PSCN for whom dermoscopy was used as an helpful diagnostic tool.

As the amount of rice straw collected increases, green manure crops are used to provide the needed organic matter. However, as green manure crops generate methane in the process of decomposition, we tested with different tillage depths in order to reduce the emission. The atmosphere temperature of the chamber was 25~40°C during the examination of methane and soil temperature was 2~10°C lower than air temperature. The redox potential (Eh) of the soil drastically fell right before irrigated transplanting and showed -300~-400 mV during the cultivating period of rice (7~106 days after transplant). When hairy vetch was incorporated to soil and the field was not irrigated, the generation of methane did not occur from 12 to 4 days before transplanting rice and started after irrigation. Regarding the pattern of methane generation during the cultivation of rice, methane was generated 7 days after transplanting, reached the pinnacle at by 63~74 days after transplanting, rapidly decreased after 86~94 days past transplanting and stopped after 106 days past transplanting. When tested by different soil types, methane emission gradually increased in loam and clay loam during early transplant, whereas it sharply increased in sandy loam. The total amount of methane emitted was highest in sandy loam, followed by loam and clay loam. In all three soil types, methane emission significantly reduced when tillage depth was 20 cm compared to 10 cm. The rice growths and yield were not affected by tillage depth. Therefore, reduction of methane emission could be achieved when application hairy vetch to the soil with tillage depth of 20 cm in paddy soil.
Relationship between Depression and Sleep Patterns of Middle School Student in Seoul
Sang- Sup Lee,Bung- Nyun Kim,Subin Park,Min- Hyeon Park 대한신경정신의학회 2017 신경정신의학 Vol.56 No.2
Objective This study examined the association between the sleep patterns and depression of middle school students in Seoul. Methods 450 adolescents attending middle school (mean age 14.07 years, 40% male) responded to the survey. The participants answered the self- administered questionnaires about sleep patterns (Morningness- Eveningness Questionnaire, MEQ), sleep problems (Insomnia Severity Index, ISI ; Epworth Sleepiness Scale, ESS), and depressive symptoms (Children s Depression Inventory, CDI). Results The depressive group represented 25.9% of the total study sample with females exhibiting higher depressive index scores than males. Although the difference in the total sleeping time between the depressive group and control group was unspecified, the ISI and ESS scores were significantly higher in the depressive group than in the control group. In addition, there was a significant positive correlation between the total ISI and CDI scores. Those who scored higher than 8 on the ISI were 2.24 times more likely to belong to the depressive group, and those who scored higher than 7 on the ESS were 2.23 times more likely to belong to the depressive group. Conclusion The depressive group tended to suffer from insomnia and experience more severe daytime sleepiness than students in the control group. In addition, students suffering from more severe insomnia tended to have higher CDI scores than their counterparts. Furthermore, students suffering from insomnia and/or experiencing daytime sleepiness were at least twice as likely to develop depression than other students.
Therapeutically Targeting Neuroinflammation and Microglia after Acute Ischemic Stroke
Lee, Youngjeon,Lee, Sang-Rae,Choi, Sung S.,Yeo, Hyeon-Gu,Chang, Kyu-Tae,Lee, Hong J. Hindawi Publishing Corporation 2014 BioMed research international Vol.2014 No.-

Inflammation has a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of ischemic stroke, and recent studies posit that inflammation acts as a double-edged sword, not only detrimentally augmenting secondary injury, but also potentially promoting recovery. An initial event of inflammation in ischemic stroke is the activation of microglia, leading to production of both pro- and anti-inflammatory mediators acting through multiple receptor signaling pathways. In this review, we discuss the role of microglial mediators in acute ischemic stroke and elaborate on preclinical and clinical studies focused on microglia in stroke models. Understanding how microglia can lead to both pro- and anti-inflammatory responses may be essential to implement therapeutic strategies using immunomodulatory interventions in ischemic stroke.
