Background: It is well established that vascular contraction is caused by not only an increase in cytosolic Ca2+ level but also activations of Ca2- sensitizing mechanisms including protein kinase C (PKC) and low molecular GTP binding protein. However, the rolls of PKC and RhoA, a low molecular GTP-binding protein, on the receptor agonist-mediated contraction in swine pulmonary artery has not been clarified. In the present study, we examined the contribution of PKC isoform and RhoA to the arterial stimulants-induced contraction in swine pulmonary artery. Method: The large (> 5 mm), medium (1-3 mm) and small (< 1 mm in outer diameter) sized pulmonary arteries were excised and the contractions were recorded isometrically. The contents and subcellular distribution of PKC isoforms and RhoA were detected using immunoblotting. Results: In medium pulmonary artery, norepinephrine (NE, 10 nM -30μM) led contraction in a dose-dependent manner. In large and small pulmonary arteries, however, NE failed to induce a contrac-tion. Adding of 12-deoxyphorbol 13-isobutyrate (DPB, 1 μM), a PKC activator, developed muscle force in 1 mM BGTA-contained Ca+2 -free physiological salt solution. The expressions of PKC α, ε, were significantly increased in medium pulmonary artery. NE (10 μM) evoked the translocation of RhoA from cytosol to the membrane but not those of PKC isoforms, In Ca2+-free physiological salt solution, DPB (1 μM) caused a translocation of PKC isoforms. Conclusions: These results support that NE induces contraction via RhoA pathway but not PKC pathway in swine pulmonary artery. (Korean J Anesthesiol 2001; 40: 229 ~237)

Anesthetic management for aortic arch aneurysm (AAA) surgery employing deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in a Jehovah`s Witness (JW) patient is a challenge to anesthesiologist due to its complexity of procedures and their refusal of allogeneic transfusion. Even in the strict application of intraoperative acute normovolemic hemodilution (ANH) and intraopertive cell salvage (ICS) technique, prompt timing of re-administration of salvaged blood is essential for successful operation without allogeneic transfusion or ischemic complication of major organs. Cerebral oximetery (rSO2) monitoring using near infrared spectroscopy is a useful modality for detecting cerebral ischemia during the AAA surgery requiring direct interruption of cerebral flow. The present case showed that rSO2 can be used as a trigger facilitating to find a better timing for the re-administration of salvaged blood acquired during the AAA surgery for JW patient. Analysis of phenolics and tocopherol compounds in produced resveratrol rice (Oryza sativa L.)

This study investigated the functional substances, including phenolics, tocopherol compounds in rice (Onnuri, Nampyeong, Dongjin, Deuraechan, Hopum, Iksan-515, Iksan-526) that were cultivated in Iksan region. Specially, Iksan-515 and Iksan-526 were produced resveratrol rice. Resveratrol is health-beneficial compound with strong antioxidant activity. Iksan-515 and Iksan-526 were contained resveratrol compound while, other rice varieties did not showed resveratrol. The total phenolic compounds showed similar concentrations in 7 rice varieties. Especially, Iksan-526 revealed 273.3 ㎍ g-1 and Iksan-515 was 264.8 ㎍ g-1. In this study, we analyzed vitamin E contents of 7 varieties of rice. The total tocopherols revealed 418.3 ㎍ g-1 in Iksan-526, 401.2 ㎍ g-1 in Iksan-515 and 413.3 ㎍ g-1 in Hopum. We determined 4 tocopherols (α-, β-, γ-, δ-) and 4 tocotrienols (α-, β-, γ-, δ-). Among the all samples, β-tocotrienol showed higher average concentrations (101.3 ㎍ g-1) than other compounds and, γ-tocotrienol revealed second higher concentration (94.5 ㎍ g-1). On the other hand, δ-tocopherol was not detected in all rice samples.

<P>The study evaluated the clinical intraoperative effects of intrathecal administration of fentanyl on shoulder tip pain in patients undergoing laparoscopic total extraperitoneal inguinal hernia repair (TEP) under spinal anaesthesia.</P>
