• Atom probe tomography of interfaces in ceramic films and oxide scales

        Stiller, K.,Thuvander, M.,Povstugar, I.,Choi, P.P.,André,n, H.-O. Cambridge University Press (Materials Research Soc 2016 MRS bulletin Vol.41 No.1

        <▼1>Abstract
</▼1><▼2>
Atomic-scale characterization of interfaces in ceramic materials is needed in order to fully understand their electronic, ionic, mechanical, magnetic, and optical properties. The latest development of laser-assisted atom probe tomography (APT), as well as new specimen preparation methods, have opened the realm of ceramics for structural and chemical characterization with high sensitivity and nearly atomic spatial resolution. This article reviews recent APT investigations of interfaces in thin nitride films and thermally grown oxides: TiAlN layers and oxide scales on alumina- and chromia-formers and Zr alloys. The selected examples highlight the role of interfaces in the decomposition of films and in transport processes.
</▼2>

      • Transferring the Dharma Message of the Master – Inscriptions on Korean Monk Portraits from the Chosŏn Period

Maya Stiller 서울대학교 규장각한국학연구원 2008 Seoul journal of Korean studies Vol.21 No.2

This article aims to give an overview of the inscriptions written on Korean Buddhist monk portraits, which serve as important means to understand the motivation of the donors who financed their production, and to explore the main functions of the portraits to the dharma descendants of the depicted. As will be seen in the examples of the sixteen portraits of the State Preceptors from Songgwangsa, lay persons as well as Buddhist monks donated money for the making of monk portraits in order to accumulate merit. It is in the painting inscriptions that these motivations are revealed. The eulogies provide information about the personal relations between the depicted and his scholar-friends and disciples, information that offers a significant contribution to the understanding of Chosŏn dynasty Buddhism. Eulogies written by famous scholars, and lengthy portrait titles, enhance the representative function of the portraits to serve as authorizing devices for the dharma lineage of the designated temple. In other words, by writing a eulogy, the scholars served as multiplicators of their friend’s fame and reputation. However, the portraits were commissioned by the disciples, and had never been authorized by the depicted masters themselves. The making of the portraits could thereby assist the disciples in constructing a designated temple’s dharma lineage. The eulogies written by the disciples enhance this notion, as they show the wish for the spread of the prestige and fame of the master. For the disciples, a portrait of their master symbolized the continuity of their lineage. At the same time, their eulogies also make one point very clear: a portrait is nothing but an expedient to comprehend the awakened mind of an eminent deceased master.

        WeTrace: a Privacy-preserving Tracing Approach

        Muriel Franco,Bruno Rodrigues,Christian Killer,Eder John Scheid,Alessandro De Carli,Andreas Gassmann,David Schönbächler,Burkhard Stiller 한국통신학회 2021 Journal of communications and networks Vol.23 No.5

For the protection of people and society against harmand health threats—especially in case of the COVID-19 pandemic— a variety of different disciplines needs to be involved. The datacollection of basic and health-related data of individuals in today’shighly mobile society does help to plan, protect, and identify nextsteps health authorities and governments can, shall, or need to planfor or even implement. Thus, every individual, human, and inhabitantof the world is the key player—very different from many pastcrises’. And since all individuals are involved his/her (a) health and(b) privacy shall be considered in a very carefully crafted balance, not overruling one aspect with another one. Privacy remains key. The solution of the current pandemic’s data collection can bebased on a fully privacy-preserving application, which can be usedby individuals on their mobile devices, such as smartphones, whilemaintaining at the same time their privacy. Additionally, respectivedata collected in such a fully distributed setting does help to confinethe pandemic and can be achieved in a democratic and very open, but still and especially privacy-protecting manner. Therefore, the WeTrace approach and application designed utilizesthe Bluetooth low energy (BLE) communication channel, many modern mobile devices offer, where public-key cryptographyis being applied to allow for deciphering of messages for that destinationit had been intended for. Since literally every other potentialparticipant only listens to random data, even a brute force attackwill not succeed. WeTrace and its Open Source implementation ensurethat any receiver of a message knows that this is for him/her,without being able to identify the original sender.

Impairments of Social Interaction in Depressive Disorder

        Erhan Akinci,Max-Oskar Wieser,Simon Vanscheidt,Shirin Diop,Vera Flasbeck,Burhan Akinci,Cora Stiller,Georg Juckel,Paraskevi Mavrogiorgou 대한신경정신의학회 2022 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.19 No.3

Objective Despite the numerous findings on the altered emotion recognition and dysfunctional social interaction behavior of depressive patients, a lot of the relationships are not clearly clarified. Methods In this pilot study, 20 depressive patients (mean±SD, 38.4±14.2) and 20 healthy subjects (mean±SD, 38.9±15.3) (each in dyads) were videographed. We then analyzed their social interaction behavior and emotion processing in terms of emotion recognition, their own emotional experience, and the expression of emotions under the conditions of a semi-structured experimental paradigm. Results Patients showed more significant impairment regarding the dimensions of social interaction behavior (i.e., attention, interest, and activity) and their interaction behavior was characterized by neutral affectivity, silence, and avoidance of direct eye contact. This interactive behavioral style was statistically related to depressive psychopathology. There were no differences concerning emotion recognition. Conclusion Impairments of non-verbal and verbal social interaction behavior of depressive patients seem to be less associated with disturbances of basic skills of emotion recognition.

International incidence of childhood cancer, 2001–10: a population-based registry study

        Steliarova-Foucher, Eva,Colombet, Murielle,Ries, Lynn A G,Moreno, Florencia,Dolya, Anastasia,Bray, Freddie,Hesseling, Peter,Shin, Hee Young,Stiller, Charles A Lancet Pub. Group 2017 LANCET ONCOLOGY Vol.18 No.6

Summary

Background

Cancer is a major cause of death in children worldwide, and the recorded incidence tends to increase with time. Internationally comparable data on childhood cancer incidence in the past two decades are scarce. This study aimed to provide internationally comparable local data on the incidence of childhood cancer to promote research of causes and implementation of childhood cancer control.

Methods

This population-based registry study, devised by the International Agency for Research on Cancer in collaboration with the International Association of Cancer Registries, collected data on all malignancies and non-malignant neoplasms of the CNS diagnosed before age 20 years in populations covered by high-quality cancer registries with complete data for 2001–10. Incidence rates per million person-years for the 0–14 years and 0–19 years age groups were age-adjusted using the world standard population to provide age-standardised incidence rates (WSRs), using the age-specific incidence rates (ASR) for individual age groups (0–4 years, 5–9 years, 10–14 years, and 15–19 years). All rates were reported for 19 geographical areas or ethnicities by sex, age group, and cancer type. The regional WSRs for children aged 0–14 years were compared with comparable data obtained in the 1980s.

Findings

Of 532 invited cancer registries, 153 registries from 62 countries, departments, and territories met quality standards, and contributed data for the entire decade of 2001–10. 385 509 incident cases in children aged 0–19 years occurring in 2·64 billion person-years were included. The overall WSR was 140·6 per million person-years in children aged 0–14 years (based on 284 649 cases), and the most common cancers were leukaemia (WSR 46·4), followed by CNS tumours (WSR 28·2), and lymphomas (WSR 15·2). In children aged 15–19 years (based on 100 860 cases), the ASR was 185·3 per million person-years, the most common being lymphomas (ASR 41·8) and the group of epithelial tumours and melanoma (ASR 39·5). Incidence varied considerably between and within the described regions, and by cancer type, sex, age, and racial and ethnic group. Since the 1980s, the global WSR of registered cancers in children aged 0–14 years has increased from 124·0 (95% CI 123·3–124·7) to 140·6 (140·1–141·1) per million person-years.

Interpretation

This unique global source of childhood cancer incidence will be used for aetiological research and to inform public health policy, potentially contributing towards attaining several targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The observed geographical, racial and ethnic, age, sex, and temporal variations require constant monitoring and research.

Funding

International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Union for International Cancer Control.
