Ceruloplasmin has been investigated as one of the useful biologic index for early diagnosis of atherolsclerosis. However, there was no normal reference value taking into account the confounders in Korea. This study was performed to estimate the normal reference values and present the confounders of ceruloplasmin. Also we compared of serum ceruloplasmin levels among normal reference group and three abnormal groups: 475 healthy subjects, 53 liver dysfunctions, 72 positive test of chronic inflammatory diseases, and 89 hypercholesterolemias. Mean serum ceruloplasmin level of healthy subjects were 41.6±7.6㎎/㎗ in males and 42.1±7.2㎎/㎗ in females, respectively. It was tend to increase of ceruloplasmin by age in both sexes. However, the statistical difference was not found by age group between both sexes. Statistically significant correlations were found between serum ceruloplasmin and age, body mass index(BMI), white blood cell(WBC) and triglyceride(TG) in males and age, BMI, WBC and total cholestrol(TG) in females. After adjustment for age, BMI,WBC and TG in males and age, BMI, WBC and TG in females, significant elevations of serum ceruloplasmin were found in liver dysfunction(p=0.0077) and positive test of chonic inflammatory disease(p=0.0217) in males and in oisitive test of chronic inflammatory disease(p=0.0023) and hypercholestolemia(p=0.0124) in females relative to healthy reference subjects. There is no statistical difference among liver dysfunction, postive test of chronic inflammatory disease, and hypercholesterolemia.

Acute torsion of the ovary and ovarian mass is a recognized surgical emergency, but rarely has the diagnosis been made preoperatively on the basis of imaging studies. The sonographic findings in 14 cases of surgically proven torsion of the ovary and ovarian mass are described. Mostly cystic ovarian mass, engorged vessel, dilated uterine tube, beak-like echo(torsion site), smooth mass wall thickening an free-fluid collection in cul-de-sac are described. More significant in terms of specificity were the demonstration in 6 cases(42.9%) of the smooth mass wall thickening and in 8 cases(57.1%) of a free fluid in the cul-de-sac. We report the sonographic findings of ovary and ovarian mass torsion that may suggest the preoperative diagnosis of this condition.

Although plant-derived flavonoids have been reported to have anti-cancer activities, the exact mechanism of these actions is not completely understood. In this study we investigated the role for reactive oxygen species (ROS) as a mediator of the apoptosis induced by apigenin, a widespread flavonoid in plant, in HepG2 human hepatoma cells. Apigenin reduced cell viability, and induced apoptotic cell death in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, it evoked a dose-related elevation of intracellular ROS level. Treatment with various inhibitors of the NADPH oxidase (diphenylene iodonium, apocynin, neopterine) significantly blunted both the generation of ROS and induction of apoptosis induced by apigenin. These results suggest that ROS generated through the activation of the NADPH oxidase may play an essential role in the apoptosis induced by apigenin in HepG2 cells. These results further suggest that apigenin may be valuable for the therapeutic management of human hepatomas.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Background</B></P> <P>Paclitaxel plus gemcitabine (PG) combination chemotherapy is a preferred chemotherapeutic regimen for patients with metastatic breast cancer (MBC). Eribulin mesylate is a halichondrin non-taxane inhibitor of microtubule dynamics. A recent pooled analysis with eribulin showed improved overall survival (OS) in various MBC patient subgroups pretreated with anthracycline and taxane. Furthermore, eribulin may have less neurotoxicity than paclitaxel.</P> <P><B>Patients and methods</B></P> <P>This study was a prospective randomised phase II, open-label, two-arm, multicentre study comparing eribulin plus gemcitabine (EG) with PG chemotherapy as a first-line treatment for patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative MBC. We hypothesised that EG chemotherapy would not be inferior to PG chemotherapy. The primary end-point was progression-free survival (PFS), which was estimated to be 70% at 6 months for each arm. The secondary end-points were as follows: OS, neuropathic scale, toxicity and clinical benefit rate.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>A total of 118 patients (median age: 50, 24–66) were enrolled between March 2015 and March 2016 and were randomly assigned to PG (<I>n</I> = <I>59</I>) or EG (<I>n</I> = <I>59</I>) chemotherapy. The mean number of metastatic sites was 3 (range 1–8). The 6-month PFS rates for both arms were 72% for EG and 73% for PG (<I>P</I> = <I>0.457</I>). There was no significant difference in OS between the two groups (not reached versus 21.2 months, <I>P</I> = <I>0.2234</I>). The median number of chemotherapy cycles for both groups was 10 for EG and 8 for PG (range 2–32). Clinical benefit rates were 44% for EG and 49% for PG. Major toxicities were neutropenia and neurotoxicity.
