      • A Study on Chinese-English Translation of Cursing Expressions as Culture-Specific Items in David Hawkes’ Version of Hong Lou Meng

        The aim of this paper is to examine the application of Javier Franco Aixelá’s culture-specific items (CSIs) translation strategies to Chinese-English translation of cursing expressions in David Hawkes’ English version of Hou Long Meng. On the basis of the analysis supported by the statistics of seven cursing expressions, this paper argues that only 4 of Aixelá’s 11 strategies are applicable, namely, Naturalization, Absolute universalization, Linguistic (non-cultural) translation and Deletion.

        Analysis of the Three-Way Decision Rules in Online Learning-Taking a Calculus Course as an Example

        To investigate the credibility of online examinations, we randomly chose 30 engineering students in Wenzheng College of Soochow University as a sample and established an informationsystem S. According to pedagogy theory, students’scores are related to their intelligencelevels, course basis, learning methods, and learning time. Therefore, in the information systemS, “score of early semester,” “average score of class quizzes,” “completion ratio of watchingvideos,” and “completion grade of homework” were taken as the condition attributes, and“score of final exam” was taken as the decision attribute. We applied the three-way decisionrules theory to provide positive, negative, and boundary decision rules for this informationsystem S. Furthermore, we obtained confidence in the decision rules. The results of this studyvalidate the credibility of online examinations and have certain guiding significance for onlineteaching and learning.

        Modeling of Friction Torque Based on Turntable Servo System Using Neural Network with Memory Storage Unit

        Friction is the main factor affecting the performance of the servo systems. The tracking accuracy can be effectively improved by compensating the rotational torque online with the accurate value of friction torque. Therefore, it is necessary to build a friction model, which can accurately describe the friction characteristics of the servo systems during operation. This paper proposes a neural network model based on the mechanical characteristics of friction. The memory storage unit is added to the network structure to store the state information between the current and the next speed reversal time so as to process the dynamic and static friction characteristics separately. To eliminate the quantization noise existing in the angular velocity calculated by the angular position difference, the Savitzky-Golay convolution smoothing algorithm is used to smooth the angular velocity and the genetic algorithm is used to determine the sliding window size and the fitting polynomial order. The simulation results show that the neural network model proposed in this paper can reproduce the characteristics of the dynamic and static friction torque well, and the fitting effect is better than that of the feedforward network and LuGre model under different forms of excitation signals, so it has strong generalization ability and predictive accuracy. In addition, the modeling process can be effectively simplified, thus verifying the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

        Effects of Root Pruning on Adventitious Root Formation, Enzyme Activities, and Hormone Levels in Paeonia suffruticosa ‘Fengdanbai’ Seedlings

        Root pruning during early root development can optimize the root structure of woody plants. To determine the effects of root pruning on tree peony (Paeonia suffruticosa), seedlings of the tree peony cultivar ‘Fengdanbai’ were subjected to varying degrees or different styles of root pruning. Various indexes were analyzed, including the anatomical structure of the root, root vitality, the activity levels of antioxidant enzymes, and the contents of endogenous hormones and their ratios. Comprehensive morphological observation showed that pruning freshly germinated roots that are 3 cm long by 1/3 (i.e., removing 1 cm) yielded the greatest rooting rate (90%), lateral root initiation (2.34 per seedling), and subsequent growth. Analysis of physiological and biochemical indicators during the critical rooting period (3-5 days after root pruning) showed that the levels of superoxide dismutase and abscisic acid (ABA) were decreased, while the oxidase activities of peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and indole acetate oxidase and the contents of the endogenous hormones indole acetic acid (IAA), gibberellin (GA3), and zeatin (ZT) were increased. IAA plays a key role in the process of adventitious root formation and the ratios of IAA/GA3, IAA/ABA, and IAA/ZT reflect endogenous hormone homeostasis during adventitious root formation. IAA/ABA and IAA/ZT showed higher values in the pruned roots compared to the control roots, which favor adventitious root induction and elongation. These results provide a basis for the study of adventitious root formation in tree peony.

        Development of an immunochromatographic strip for detection of antibodies against porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus

        A simple and rapid immunochromatographic test strip incorporating a colloidal gold-labeled recombinant Nsp7 antigen probe was successfully developed for the detection of anti-porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) antibodies in swine. Recombinant Nsp7 protein of PRRSV labeled with colloidal gold was dispensed on a conjugate pad for use as the detector. Staphylococcal protein A and purified porcine anti-Nsp7 antibodies were blotted on a nitrocellulose membrane to form test and control lines, respectively. A comparison of the strip with standard diagnostic tests, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays and immunoperoxidase monolayer assay, was also performed. The immunochromatographic test strip was shown to be of high specificity and sensitivity. Furthermore, the strip assay is rapid and easy to perform with no requirement for professional-level skills or equipment. It is suggested that the immunochromatographic test strip can be used to quickly and accurately detect PRRSV antibody and to be suitable for diagnostic purposes in the field.
